Canada's Drag Race (2020– )
6/10
The Great Warm North
19 January 2022
After a rocky first season the Canuck cousin of the Drag Race franchise family has falteringly found its feet - not missed is the stiff Bowyer-Chapman and in came the far more suitable Brad Goreski (but neither Brugel & Melchor, even combined, match the presence of Stacey McKenzie). After the wall-to-wall contrivances and drama of Oz's fraught first season, I found myself warming to Canada's considerably more subdued vibe and not missing Ru at all. It's still not a perfect version of the format and in the most recent season they boasted that they were trying "something new" which just amounted to a kind of semi all-stars/vs the world type system and a lip-sync-only episode. The creaking franchise's northern cousin is never consistent, but always interesting and there's a nice sense of camaraderie and Canadian warmth to the whole endeavour.
