Bel-Air (2022– )
8/10
Surprisingly great
4 March 2022
Well, this is definitely the biggest surprise of the year so far. I remember hearing about this being rebooted and, like most everyone else, my initial thought was, "Why? This is pointless. There's literally no reason for this to be made. " I loved the original and to this day think it's still one the best sitcoms/African American shows/90s shows ever made. So, ya, initially had no desire to see it remade. But, after watching a YouTube video about it and realizing that will smith himself is one of the producers and gave this show his blessing, i decided to give it a fair shot and go into it with an open mind. And i gotta say, I am very much liking it so far. This show basically tells kind of the same story as the original but does it in a much more serious, somewhat darker way. There are some good Easter eggs and references to the original that fans will be able to appreciate, but unlike something like fuller house, it doesn't completely rely on that nostalgia. Its very familiar while also managing to be its own thing. Some minor character changes have been made, but they're not necessarily bad ones. Geoffrey is no longer the butler, he's now manager of the house and acts more as uncle Phil's best friend and muscle. Though i do miss his one-liners, this is an awesome change. Hilary is no longer just a spoiled bimbo, she's now an influencer who is trying to make her own way in the world. I do miss will and Carltons relationship/brotherhood from the original show, but it's still season 1 so maybe we'll get there. All in all, this show certainly isn't a replacement for the original, but its really freaking good and is definitely worth your time. While the original bel-air may be king, this is definitely the prince.
