Catcher Likes It Rough

James Coburn guests as the bad guy who gets killed for being a total sleaze. It is amazing to me all the variety of nasty characters that James Coburn played as a guest on several Westerns. He could really take a script and put his own vicious spin on it that made him pop as a villain.

In this case, not only is Coburn a bully to the ranch hands that work under him, but he is particularly mean to a mentally defective character called Catcher, played by Med Flory. He is also trying to seduce the ranch owner's wife, and he pretty much brags about it to his boss, the ranch owner.

Med Flory's role as Catcher disappointing, as his character was written strictly as just a dumb lunk. Catcher seems oblivious to everything. It would have been nice if Med Flory had made his character more sympathetic.

Robert Armstrong plays the ranch owner, and he delivers a good performance as an older man facing the destruction of his happy marriage; and later as someone who has to choose between losing it all anyway, or letting an innocent man die.
