One of the best Horror flicks from the Philippines, "Kuwaresma" (The Entity) is a strange tale of family secrets and hauntings in the summer capital of the country. A family haunted by its past and surroundings comes to terms with reality facing it head-on as fate casts them hurtling into the abyss struggling and surmounting against the horror of it all. Shot in dark tones moving at a languid pace that highlight the ominous and eerie atmosphere the film never holds back in this odd and surreal world. A sinister place of secrets, sadism, demonology and what have you culminating in a gripping climax that never seems to end leaving you fixated and convinced. Megastar Sharon Cuneta and respected stage and film actor John Arcilla are naturals in their respective roles as the estranged couple with a dark past. It's hard to tell if it's a slip in the acting and directing or if it's meant to highlight the weirdness of the film but some of the scene's and acting are odd and unrealistic leaving question marks to the viewer. The inconsistent acting of the young actor who plays the son shows his inexperience and is a snag on the movie considering his place in a leading role. I watched this film primarily to view my childhood crush Guila Alvarez whose been on a hiatus in film for a long time and while age has done a number on her she looks as fine as her acting here. Flawed but watchable "Kuwaresma" shows Pinoys have come a long way since the hilariously laughable days in my youth when local scary flicks were known more for their bad acting and ludicrous low budget props. This is one worth seeing.
