The Garcias (2022)
A show worth keeping

I was in middle school when the Brothers Garcia came out and I wasn't thinking about representation much in those days but in retrospect I appreciate what Nickelodeon gave Latine kids in their programming. The original show is still charming and I love the idea of revisiting this wholesome family.

What I love is that the kids end up exactly as you'd imagine. Larry is an astronaut, Lorena is full of life, George & Carlos are still so close that they're in business together. I do wish there was more Larry as the original show is narrated by adult him (John Leguizamo) so while I don't mind that it's Carlos' daughter narrating, I never get a sense it's her story like the original was Larry's.

My biggest criticism is that I'm not a fan of the way they have George's wife & sometimes his daughter treat him. I feel like it's meant to be charming because George is "out of touch" but it just comes across as mean which is unfortunate because George is such a wholesome guy.

The show is pretty self aware of it being an example of Latin representation which I think it relies on a little too much, whereas the original show just was representation without overt acknowledgment of it. Granted with the current political climate and the awareness of how little positive Latin representation there truly is in the media, it's hard to ignore that.

Overall, it's a cute premise, that I certainly can really find even more stride with more seasons, so hope it gets picked up for more.
