Review of Vernost

The actress Evgeniya Gromova is very good in the complex role of Lena in "Vernost." Lena and her husband Sergei have had some turbulence in their marriage. He is an actor focused on his play, and he is not very communicative with his wife. She then betrays him, and the situation turns into a disaster.

Lena is good at her job as an obstetrician. At one point in the film, she miraculously turns a baby around while still in the womb. She was referred to as a midwife in the best sense of that word. As perceptive as she is with human anatomy, she is not equally skilled in human psychology. She completely misreads her husband's professional relationship with a fellow actor, and she mistakenly concludes that he is a cheater. That mindset leads Lena to become a cheater herself.

Unfortunately for Lena, she has some bad luck with one of her lovers. He turns out to be the husband of one of her pregnant patients. The wife learns about the tryst, and Lena's career is in tatters.

The ebb-and-flow in the relationship of Lena and Sergey was not always persuasive. There never seemed to be any genuine forgiveness on the part of Sergei, and Lena herself did not seem overly contrite for her mischief. Yet, the couple is still together at the end.

Perhaps the filmmakers anticipate a sequel: "Vernost II."
