Review of Willa

Willa (1979 TV Movie)
2/10
Mother Trucker.

Warning: Spoilers
Life isn't dull for the not so bright title character (Deborah Raffin), a very aggravating character whose desire to be a semi driver causes her no end of trouble and threatens to take away her children when she applies for welfare. She leaves her steady job slinging hash for Mary Wicked and begins with lessons through veteran driver John Amos who isn't pleased by her being pregnant. Welfare check Nancy Marchand threatens to take away her children if she doesn't start a search for the baby daddy. Raffin seems to turn down advice from everyone, eventually being paired up with veteran female trucker Cloris Leachman, popping up in the later part of the film.

Saddled with an alcoholic mother (Diane Ladd) not fit to look after herself let alone her grandchildren, Raffin is so unconcerned by her responsibilities that she becomes far too irritating to care about. A great cast (with the exception of the brainless performance of Deborah Raffin) can't save this poorly written TV film. Ma Kettle taking up trucking would be far more interesting than this, although Leachman is basically playing that part. I wouldn't recommend this film at all, even for fans of the supporting cast members.
