Kudos to Hugh Bonneville for taking this dark, foreboding role of a retired judge with a bushelful of personal demons. Was "I Came By" the four course meal that I'm constantly looking for? No, it was more like a tasty snack, but it did hold my interest throughout. This wasn't a mystery in the classic sense; the viewer knows pretty quickly who the good folks and who the baddies are. But there are enough twists and turns along the way to make for a nice roller coaster ride.
What makes it work is the cast. No one mailed it in, as Bonneville, Kelly MacDonald and (new to me) Percelle Ascott threw themselves into their roles. Sure, there were a few plot contrivances along the way, but no biggie. The movie was a 7, a limited but satisfying meal.
