Star Trek: Prodigy (2021–2024)
10/10
9yo boy & mom both love it
16 October 2022
Hey y'all. My 9yo son and I have watched Prodigy since it came out, and we've both enjoyed it immensely. There are times when the references go over his head but I catch them, and there are times that he spots them (to my surprise).

I love the way they've built the core themes of Star Trek right into the material, giving kids some basic background before ever making it to Federation space, but it doesn't feel overdone. Like, when you read a book series and the first chapter of every subsequent book is a rehash of the previous book? Or the way Doctor Who rehashes who the Doctor is every time there's a new companion? Prodigy does it with a gentle touch, and even when it's happening, they manage to make it fun to watch anyway. Murf trying to eat a holographic star while Janeway is monologging? Adorable and brilliantly placed. The bit about Klingons just slipped in on that one planet? That was a very slick maneuver.

It does have some of the style and pacing as the Clone Wars, but I would disagree with folks who think they're trying to make Star Trek like Star Wars. It's a whole different universe, and while the characters are often dealing with ethical issues, it's not light vs dark, and it's *really* not not as gritty and as in-the-trenches feeling as Clone Wars (or Picard).

If you're thinking of trying Prodigy, do, and bring kids along for the ride. Age-wise, my son was 8 when we started watching it last year, and while it gets intense sometimes, it's all been fine. That's a contrast with Strange New Worlds, because the Gorn episodes got too intense for him. He can also handle most episodes of OS, TNG, Voy, and some DS9, and he really enjoyed the first movie in the Kelvin universe. In the Star Wars universe, he can handle most of it, but backs out of Ep. III, Rogue One, and the Mandalorian (we haven't watched Boba Fett or Obi-Wan yet). :)

Thanks!
