Bad Boy Bubby (1993)

Well-made but hard to recommend to most

I don't think I was expecting this to be an easy watch, but I definitely didn't think it was going to go to the places it went. And it went to some of its wildest and weirdest places in the opening scenes, to boot.

This is an Australian drama (plus maybe a dark comedy, in some ways?) about a man who's kept locked away from the world until he's in his 30s, and then how he responds to the world - and how the world responds to him - when he eventually breaks free. I guess from the premise and structure alone, it reminded me a bit of 2015's Room, but with very, very different execution, and an incredibly different energy, too.

I found parts really uncomfortable but other parts quite emotionally affecting. It's a strange movie and not always easy to watch (actually it's almost never easy to watch) but I can't deny it was really well-made, and Nicholas Hope in the lead role was very good, too.

I can't imagine how startling this would have been nearly 30 years ago, because it's still pretty shocking and intense now. It makes it hard to know who might like it, when it comes to recommending it... but for anyone wanting something truly offbeat and unique, it could well scratch that itch.
