The River (1951)

white in India

Harriet is a young white English girl in colonial India. Her family lives on the banks of the Ganges River. Her father runs the jute mill. She as an adult is the narrator of the movie. She describes this foreign world and foreign customs as part of her own. Her older friend Valerie is taken with Capt. John who lost a leg in the war. On the other hand, he may have eyes for a mixed blood girl named Melanie.

For an American audience, this must have been eye-opening in terms of the Indian culture. I just don't know how many Americans actually saw this back in the day. The visuals and the cultural material are incredible. It's an interesting story. The actors can overact sometimes. The melodrama can be overplayed. This is a good lesser-known film.
