The Hillbilly Twilight Zone
28 November 2022
This film essentially begins with a famous black singer by the name of "Elizabeth 'Liz' Wetherly" (Leslie Uggams) finishing up a tour and then getting in her car to enjoy a relaxing vacation before continuing on with her next performance in a couple of weeks. Unfortunately, while traveling on a backroad somewhere in rural Georgia, her car breaks down and she is forced to seek repairs at a run-down garage located next to a cheap hotel in the middle of nowhere. As fate would have it, although the mechanic named "Keno" (Ted Cassidy) believes he can have the car fixed relatively soon, the manager of the hotel "Eddie Collins" (Michael Christian) has other plans and deliberately sabotages it in order to ensure that Liz stays even longer. So, with nowhere else to go, Liz reluctantly takes a room in one of the nearby cabins. That evening, she becomes acquainted with a few of the local residents but it's not until after she is violently raped by Eddie that she realizes the nightmare world she has just entered. Now, rather than reveal any more, I will just say that this film turned out to be one of the most bizarre movies I have seen in quite a while things became even more unpredictable the longer it progressed. On that note, I should mention that this film includes several scenes of a violent and sexual nature and, as such, is definitely not suited for younger audiences. It does, however, feature several good performances with Shelley Winters (as "Bertha") and the aforementioned Leslie Uggams standing out the most, in my opinion. Be that as it may, while this movie may not appeal to everyone, I found it to be somewhat unique in its own right and I have rated it accordingly. Above average.
