Thirtysomething (1987–1991)

The beginning of a whole TV sub genre.

I was only able to get to watch the first season. And expect the third season set, to drop soon. But I guess it's all I need to know about this show. It was the first of a long series of character driven drama/comedy. Dramedy if you like. Think Party of Five, Significant Others, Felicity, Once and Again, Brothers and Sisters, Friends and Dawson's Creek, even. And you might enjoy this show too. It is aesthetically outdated, but the writing is still relevant to people whose only problem in life, isn't to know which identity they will chose for the day. Or how to break the law, without being caught. Thirtysomething is the 80s working class problems in a nutshell, and depending which character you like, some episodes get your attention more than others. That's the show's biggest flaw. It relies too much on characters centric episodes, that don't do it for you, if you don't care about the lead(s) it's focused on. Personally, I'm not a fan of Michael and Hope. They have boring lives, and are kind of bland too. So I skip over most of their parts. But the show wouldn't work without them either, as they are the safe haven to that « diverse » group of friends. The main characters are flawed, and sometimes hard to relate to, let alone root for. But the acting and dramatization is there to make us feel like we're part of the story, which is what matters. To me, each bring something to the table. I also loved all the movies nods and references, it showed how more ways than one, ahead of its time, this show was. It's a shame the revival never got to be made. It looked interesting as well.
