Long chronicle of a handful of dreams
21 December 2022
Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truth, the latest movie from director and co-writer Alejandro González Iñárritu. The story follows Silverio Gama, an acclaimed Mexican journalist and documenter filmmaker who returns to his homeland, he later starts having an existential crisis then he goes on a dreamlike introspective journey.

It's been a while since Alejandro Iñárritu's last movie The Revenant which came out in 2015. Now, he finally direct a feature film loosely based on his personal story. The main character, Silverio shares similarities with Iñárritu, a Mexican filmmaker who received many accolades and has lived in America for more than a decade. The story is presented in a bizarre, beautiful, absurd, whatever the expression is. Silverio takes us through his journey constantly shifting between a dream state and reality, and sometimes it's hard to determine which is until you get to the unexpected ending. Bardo establishes a similar theme with Birdman, the story of a man facing his past but Iñárritu manages to make this one feel more personal and deep.

Telling a particular story like this won't feel as unique without the support of great technical aspects. Alejandro Iñárritu and Cinematographer Darius Khondji brilliantly translate it through stunning visuals, extensive camera work, and unusual cinematography. With a surreal original score composed by Iñárritu and Bryce Dessner. Daniel Giménez Cacho excellently portrays a man who has an identity crisis in his native country. Over the course of 2 hours and 39 minutes runtime, this movie can be exhausting to follow, some scenes or moments are too excessive but the one on Netflix isn't the same as the one shown at the 79th Venice film festival, I'm curious whether we get to see that version.

Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truth is a visually stunning and breathtaking experience with impressive technical accomplishment that makes this movie worth watching, even with it's flaws.
