Who's the Real Target for This?
14 February 2023
First off, I must say that I quite enjoyed this. However, as an old fart familiar with (although variably fond of) much of Bowie's work, I'm not sure how much I learned. Rather, I was conscious of how much was missing (e.g. We get the work with Eno but where was Iggy?). Real Bowie fanatics will probably have seen much of this before, but people at the other extreme who are not familiar with him will probably miss a ton of fleeting allusions and hints at other aspects of his work, but without the clues to follow up. As such, it comes across a bit like an old-time family photo album, where many key events and people are just missing, but "you get what you get" and if that triggers many other personal memories, then it works. Frankly, though, given the body of work and the sheer amount of life he crammed in, I don't think we'll ever see a biopic of the man that does any more than scratch the surface. This'll do for now.
