Review of Elvis

Elvis (2022)
8/10
Makes you think of what might have been

I don't know what to say about Baz' Elvis. It's nearly 3 hours long so I split it into three days of exercise sessions and I have to say that it was so entertaining that the time flew by. Only two other long movies flew by like that, Malcom X and Ray. But... 4/5 of this movie is hyper with scenes lasting 10 seconds. It feels like a story that could have been told in a half hour stretched to nearly 3 hours. The guy who plays Elvis is OK. I think his talent was hurt by the director. Not sure why Rap music is part of the movie since it didn't exist in Elvis' time. Tom Hanks is awful as Colonel Parker. I actually met Colonel Parker when I was young. The daughter of the woman who owned the farmhouse on the corner of the street I grew up on knew a lot of celebrities and they frequently stayed over her house instead of at a hotel. The Colonial Parker that I met was nothing like the character that Tom Hanks portrays in the film. My mom met him too and had a big crush on him. This movie is entertaining but it makes one think of what it could have been in the hands of a skilled director who was more respectful of the material rather than fitting the material to his own personal style.
