200th episode celebration? No!
6 March 2023
For a start, the whole tone of the episode is downbeat and depressing, with Sylvia's promising career in criminalistics being wiped out from the start. Langston's flashback encouragement of her efforts only adds to the generally depressing nature of the script. But I have to say that if I had been asked to pick a theme to celebrate the 200th episode of an internationally successful series, I would not have suggested Lucha Libre! It may well be popular among a lot of people in Mexico, but the world in general has seen enough "professional wrestling" of all genres to be able to recognise It for the faked theatrical performance that it is. We have somewhat overweight men in masks and clown makeup pretending to beat seven bells out of each other... no. They may well be very athletic, and the gymnastics and the tricks with the elastic ring ropes are quite entertaining. Some people apparently enjoy it, as can be seen from the audiences still garnered by other varieties of "professional wrestling", but I would say that most of the TV-watching world has outgrown this style of entertainment (as it has bear-baiting), recognising it as a circus performance by clowns. It is not something that should be offered as a celebratory theme on an internationally distributed show like CSI.
