Pip is given a tempting, but dangerous proposition from Mr Jaggers, even a warning from Estella isn't sufficient to deter him from such a path.
I'll start off with the positives, production values are marvellous, it is expertly produced, it put me in mind of some of The BBC's greatest historicals.
Sadly, apart from the visuals, it just isn't working, it remains a lifeless, anaemic production. It's so hard to believe in Pip's manipulation, because his so called love for Estella is non existent, and that's the whole problem, the events that follow are meaningless, it's just not possible to care.
Ashley Thomas totally overtakes the whole episode, Mr Jaggers is the only real interest here, there are definite traits of the character from the text here, he commands fear, the hand washing etc, he truly was a cut above.
They've sexed it up a bit, they've added some language, but it's just missing something.
