Review of AKA

AKA (2023)

[6.9] The beast

Warning: Spoilers
To my standards, a mild and averagely fast-paced action crime thriller movie with the usual good mishmash, general and standard to these types of films, generic villains and more often than not one-man-army hero and protagonist.

This one though has impressive qualities too on his own terms, it has a hero who respectuously looks like a crossbreed between a Bulldog and a Pit-bull, is as charismatic as Picasso's creations aflame, as much heart as a wounded deer and as much martial arts techniques and firepower as a mini squad of GIGN. He only sees his goal, only listens to his wounded heart and physical injuries are for him like insignificant toys crashed under his feet even if he should pass out in between walking and action. All thanks to the inventors and manufacturers of bandages, duct tapes, adrenaline and epinephrine shots, he's able to attend to himself, stand up and annihilate as long as "behind the camera", bullets whizzing by and grenades flying "curvaceously".

AKA, also has heart and emotions to it and what he did for the boy cannot be forgotten, from an unlikely birthday present to saving his world and life; He lives by his own code of honor and I greatly praise him for that.

Most if not all reviews are enthusiastic and they are right, we just differ in our ratings. Honestly, I expected a flashier screenplay, putting the impressive Alban Lenoir in the spotlight more than he was, bathing us with mindless martial art and hand-to-hand combat honey, but, that's OK, that's a French movie and I know their vibe and making, AKA is true to French action-crime productions, gritty, dark, mostly realistic and relentless and I'm quite satisfied. The last scene in the bus, sitting and calming down, I couldn't help but see a "beast" with a body nearly occupying two seats; Impressive and scary.

Hint note: He deserves to be cast as Cain Marko the Juggernaut in a fresh and serious Marvel production, his life before the Cyttorak stone and after.
