the flame within

Early on in this awful film Anne Harding's psychiatrist character says to Maureen O'Sullivan's attempted suicide that "there is nothing in human nature, either mental or physical, that cannot be cured". Well, with the possible exception of horrible dialogue from directors who also think they are writers. In other words, if you are one of those who do not care what emerges from an actor's mouth (i.e, a lover of silent films) than I guess you'll be ok with this melodramatic glop that passes for human speech in this very forgettable offering from the usually good Edmund Goulding. For the rest of us it's a C minus.

PS...Twenty years before Disney O' Sullivan was doing Old Yeller (as in,"will this actress ever shut up?").
