Flashes of genius on a low budget film
25 May 2023
I don't rate Malibu Crush as a great independent film but it's pretty darn good for a low budget indie film.

What's the movie about? This is a good question, because the film looks like a feel good comedy from the cover, yet from watching it, it's clearly slapstick humor and old school comedy done well.

The jokes and the writing are executed naturally which begs the question, "What was the actual budget? It looks a low budget and credit where credit is due, the actors are brilliant and perform comedy extremely well without any special effects. There aren't many scenes in the entire film that the comedy looks forced.

The pot holes stopping this film from being called great are, the story needed to be stretched out in the third act to provide a proper ending. The film doesn't have a real ending, without giving it away, the movie ends abruptly which it didn't need to.

Another negative is the fact we are introduced in the story to several worthy characters including, Rach Taylor ( Sarah Louise Collidge and Paul Gofuller ( Scott Miller ) yet these characters we don't get to find out what happens to them in the end of the film. They make a strong impression in the middle of the film and then just disappear.

Despite the potholes, it's a darn good comedy film especially for an indie. The fact that I wanted to see a proper ending or more of the support characters shows it's got something to make it worth watching.

James Pratt and Billy White play the leads who have the bulk of the comedy on them,, they are natural comedy actors. The support cast are also fairly strong performers in Britney Hockley, Bella Valentini and Dan Musial.

It's not a great indie film, but for comedy on a budget it's got some genius in there.
