Good News (1947)

old fashion musical
8 September 2023
It's 1927 at Tait College. Football is King. Football star Tommy Marlowe (Peter Lawford) is the pick of the lot, but Pat McClellan (Patricia Marshall) rejects him. He and librarian Connie Lane (June Allyson) hits it off, but gold-digger Pat finds out that Tommy comes from wealth. Tommy reveals his impending engagement to Pat. With him failing French, the school is desperate for Connie to tutor him.

It's an old fashion musical based on the 1927 stage production. Apparently, it's been cleaned up from the stage and the pre-Code movie. It's sanitized to the point of being white bread. The songs are not my taste. Far too many times, the actors are pining and sitting and crooning the songs. It's very old fashion and static. There are some bigger dance numbers and those are the most compelling scenes. June Allyson is very endearing. Peter Lawford doesn't have the physicality of a football player, but he does have the charms of a leading man. "Pass That Peace Pipe" got an Oscar nomination for original song although it is a bit dated with modern issues. It's an old fashion musical for old fashion tastes.
