Review of Beacon 23

Beacon 23 (2023– )
2/10
Hoped for something good. Got... this.

Just to start... I haven't read the book (books?). So, I come into this series with no preconceived notions about what the show should be. I only knew that it was based on a book by the same author who wrote Silo, which was made into a series I enjoy very much.

Anyway, the first 30 seconds of episode 1 had me hopeful. The Crest flying through space looked interesting. The idea of a beacon steering ships clear of dark matter storms could have been good.

Then the dialog and plot started. That's when it all came crashing down. There are so many things in this series that are just completely off.

Halan is a painfully bad character, as is Aster. For starters, the trust that Aster puts in Halan seems very misplaced.

None of the secondary characters have been any better. I particularly dislike the two AI characters.

The apparent story arc for the season doesn't make much sense. I won't spoil it here. But it's dumb.

Anyway, I tried. I've watched the three current episodes and the show isn't improving. I'll give this a couple of stars for the visuals of space and the ideas of space beacons and dark matter storms. But that's a generous 2 stars.
