Emily Ann Faulkner (Kim Stanley) grew up poor, southern, and fatherless. Her mother is distant. She dreams to be a Hollywood star. During the war, she marries troubled G. I. John Tower (Steven Hill), noting that he's the son of a movie star. They have a baby together. Despite that, she leaves them for Hollywood stardom and former boxer Dutch Seymour (Lloyd Bridges).

This is written by Paddy Chayefsky as a chronicle of a Marilyn Monroe type figure with all the ugliness of Hollywood and personal history. The writing is provocative and insightful. The only thing is that Kim Stanley is no Marilyn Monroe. Few people are. She was in her 30's and it's hard for her to play fresh-faced twentysomething. She's better as a worn-out mom. She does get older which Monroe was never able to do. It is more about her dark home life anyways.
