Hard unflattering divorce drama.
23 December 2023
Quite a hard unflattering film that only examines one woman and her divorce but also the wider culture of relationships and problems in late 1970s America. The film is very well directed, well acted, and also quite realistic, there are not that many "big scenes" the character of course sobs a bit but she there's a strong lack of melodrama or people throwing things around. The therapy scenes were very good, the complexity of how you might deal with someone you now hate yet still have to remain civil with for the sake of your child. The daughter also gets lots of screen time and is a fairly interesting character. The film is told squarely through the mothers eyes though, we don't see her husband unless she is there too. The film is quite sympathetic to our main character without making her into a saint. There's a little bit of humour, overall quite a good film.
