Criminal Code (2023– )

Annoying - Unfortunately, the whole thing loses itself in too many ambitions
12 January 2024
My expectations were high at the beginning because the trailer looked promising. You quickly get the impression of an action-packed crime series from the classic school. But then "Code of Crime" bogs down in its grand ambitions. We have a large-scale network of criminals and the police stations of Brazil and Paraguay fight for jurisdiction. The series is packed with testosterone from South Americans. The police chief gives you the feeling that he would love to be the head of the FBI. For all the "wing-flapping", however, very little happens at first and various successes also seem rather coincidental. Benício, who is put on the case with his partner Suellen, also has his own goals first and foremost and retribution is more important to him than the case. In turn, her job is more important to her than anything else, and even her "newly" born daughter has to take a back seat.

All in all, I unfortunately didn't warm to the characters and their further development didn't convince me either. The story develops slowly, it is also about the introduction of DNA in the Brazilian investigation and there is observation and observation... then of course everything is discussed at headquarters.

In between, the narrative jumps back and forth between the police officer's past and the criminals, as well as between Brazil and Paraguay. Even though the actual events may be complex and the scope on which the fictional series is based is considerable, it doesn't succeed without chaos in the storytelling and it doesn't get really interesting. The story and the characters do not leave a lasting impression. The acting remains solid. The camera work and the score/sound are okay. The few action scenes aren't bad either, but they can't save the irrelevant chaos. The arc of suspense gets lost in all the back and forth and the whole thing unfortunately becomes irrelevant as a result, even if the series does pick up a bit from the 4th episode onwards.
