See You on Venus definitely disappointed...

Warning: Spoilers
I haven't read the book, just to get that out of the way. But when I saw the trailer, I thought it was a cute, funny rom-com about two teenagers coming together to find her birth mother in Spain and while doing so, they fall in love. I wasn't exactly right, I guess? The dialogue lacked fluidity and wasn't at all natural: it seemed forced and choppy. The plot had so much potential but they fell short. The acting was stiff and although I love the actors they cast, they just didn't give their best performances yet. This was kind of a stereotypical movie, where the girl and guy fall in love but actually, the girl kept a secret from him and turns out she has some disease or is dying. To be honest, I didn't really expect that, so it was a bit of a lot twist, although, I should've seen it coming. It was kind of like A Walk To Remember, which I loved. Also, of course she finds her birth mother in the end, but they never explained why she gave her up, which was annoying because that was the entire reason we wanted to continue watching this movie. See You On Venus was very predictable, too. And I wish there was more...character? More personality? It's a stereotype: sunny, bright, cheerful, sweet, kind girl with a depressed, bad, grieving, guilt-ridden guy. To be honest, the girl had an obnoxious and annoying personality throughout the entire film, and they showed how suicidal and depressed the guy is but in my opinion, they didn't portray it very well. If they did better at this, it would've been a lot better. I do think this movie could've done a lot better with better execution, more fluidity, more deeper character development, more relaxed and realistic dialogue, and better acting. Also, although See You on Venus is a PG, kids may get a bit scared as there are some...intense scenes, such as the various times the main character collapses and goes into the hospital numerous times, and not to mention the time where the other main character tries to commit suicide by jumping off a tall boulder into a river with a high drop. Anyways, I don't really recommend, but if you like really cheesy and predictable romantic comedies, go ahead.
