In the early 1990s there really was a push by American television to get Edward Woodward as Sherlock Holmes, even a modern day version was considered at one point.

This was a US/UK television movie. The script was written by Charles Edward Pogue who adapted two Conan Doyle stories for American television in the early 1980s.

This was an original story with liberal sprinklings of the Sherlock Holmes canon.

Set in 1900 with the European powers in turmoil. Inspector Lestrade is taking Moriarty (Anthony Andrews) to be hanged but thanks to a few smoke bombs. Moriarty escapes and he then abducts Mycroft Holmes who has information of a code that needs to be decrypted.

Sherlock Holmes (Woodward) and Dr Watson (John Hillerman) need to find Mycroft. Only to find Moriarty is always one step ahead.

There is some hammy acting, the story is tosh. The finale is laughably bad. Woodward is miscast as Holmes and Anthony Andrews should had been Holmes.
