Not the worst Screen Songs cartoon I have seen--though this is hardly a glowing endorsement!

Back in the 1930s, cartoons were clearly evolving. While some cartoons were amazing and have held up well over the years, the Fleischer Brothers Studio's 'screen songs' cartoons have clearly NOT. They are very, very dated and offer nothing but torment to any child forced to watch them today. I guess life back in 1930 was so awful that these films were seen as fun…but of course, it was the Depression!

This particular Screen Song production features a forgotten song by Irving Berlin. The cartoon itself involves a large woman who is packing her kids and belongings for a trip to the country. Dad will miss her….or so it appears. Once Mama leaves, Dad goes crazy partying and this all ends with a rather cute ending. During the course of the cartoon, the song drones on and on and on. The audience is even encouraged to sing along—following the bouncing ball (yuck!). While it's a rather painful film, at least it is animated well, has a nice ending and gives you a brief glimpse of Betty Boop back when she appeared to be a dog-lady hybrid (this, understandably, only lasted a few cartoons, as the moral implications were just too creepy).
