wheezy farce
malcolmgsw24 July 2015
Edmund Gwenn is a retired naval officer who has acquired an old valuable relic by force. He is pursued to his west country retirement cotttage by 2 groups of Spaniards. The film revolves around their attempts to reclaim the relic and his to resist them and also the prospect of his daughter's marriage to a naval officer. Also there is a curse of death attached to the relic so Gwenn thinks he is doing everyone a favour by keeping it out of circulation, notwithstanding the fact that he reckons that it is worth about half a million pounds. This is supposed to be a farce but i have to say that despite the best efforts of Gwenn it is rather unfunny. It is clearly a quota quickie, photographed in instances as if the camera were in the stalls. At best a curiosity.

"Life is too short, and their names are much too long!"

Warning: Spoilers
This short little quota quickie is basically an extended short that relies on the talents of the lovable Edmund Gwenn as a retiring Admiral who is in possession of some valuable jewels that several different groups of stereotypical Spaniards are after. He's also dealing with daughter Hope Davey who is in love with the boring James Raglan, and can't get a moment's rest to deal with that because of the intrusion of these different foreigners. There's the greasy Lothario, the seductive vamp and a middle aged gangster, yet, they seem perplexed in dealing with Kellaway simply because he seems to unknowingly out with them every time they try to get some information. Without Kellaway, this would be totally pointless, and he does have a lot of great lines particularly the one in my review title which explains why he never gets to know these Spaniards names.
