The Academy Awards grew up at the 16th annual ceremony March 2, 1944. Since the first Oscar ceremony at the Hollywood Roosevelt’s Blossom Room in 1929, the Academy Awards were small banquet ceremonies for La La Land movers and shakers. But that all changed 80 years ago. World War II was in its third year and movies meant more than ever to war-weary audiences.
So, the Oscars moved to the then-Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood and bleachers were introduced giving fans a chance to see their favorites walk the red carpet. And instead of a select industry audience, attendees included members of all branches of the armed services many of whom sat in bleachers on the stage at the Chinese. The ceremony was heard locally on Kfwb; Jack Benny hosted the international broadcast for the troops on CBS Radio via shortwave. And for the first time, supporting performers finally received a full-size Academy Award.

‘Shane’ celebrates 70th anniversary with Academy Museum screening and Christopher Nolan conversation
There are many films that have quotable last lines such as “After all, tomorrow is another day” from “Gone with the Wind.” And who can forget Humphrey Bogart telling Claude Rains: “Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship” But the beloved 1953 George Stevens’ Western “Shane” perhaps has one of the most endearing and emotional final lines. Young Joey (Brandon De Wilde) wants his idol, the former gunslinger Shane (Alan Ladd), to stay with his family. But the wounded hero continues to ride off.
“Shane………come back,” Joey cries out.
Be prepared to bring you handkerchiefs to the Academy Museum’s 70th anniversary screening Dec 10 at the David Geffen Theatre. Ladd, in his strongest performance, plays a world-weary gunslinger who wants to hang up his six-shooter. He ends up working for an honest, struggling rancher Joe, (Van Heflin), his wife Marian (Jean Arthur) and young son...

Hollywood’s postwar shift to social consciousness addressed familiar issues like bigotry and discrimination. On his way to making his gargantuan, serious epics, famed director George Stevens paused for this almost entirely forgotten contemplation of American anxiety in the business rat race, with a side order of alcoholism and potential adultery. Ray Milland is the troubled ad man who tries to help the drink-impaired actress, Joan Fontaine. Wife Teresa Wright waits patiently back home, but for how long? Is Stevens just dabbling in neorealistic doldrums, or did he feel the wave of dull existential despair as well? It’s one of his least-known films.

There's one thing you can say about every single Academy Award nominee: whether they're good films or bad films, beloved or obscure, they are officially in the history books. Future movie lovers will read about them and, often, watch them out of either passionate interest or mild curiosity, decades later.
And that's a very good thing because a lot of the films that are nominated for the Oscars fall into obscurity pretty quickly. We may remember most of the Best Picture winners, for example, but what about the other films in contention? "Casablanca" won Best Picture at the 16th Academy Awards and it's a film most people can quote directly, even if they've never watched it before. But there's a good chance that many of its fellow nominees that same year — films like "The Human Comedy," "The More the Merrier," and "Watch On the Rhine" — aren't nearly as well known today.

With two days to go until Christmas, I can’t think of a better gift for film lovers or those with an interest in iconic forces in the entertainment industry than the 2022 autobiography My Place in the Sun, which chronicles the life of George Stevens Jr — now 90 and still going strong in a remarkable career that has traversed the highest corridors of Hollywood to Washington, D.C.
Most significantly, however, it is the story of a father and son. The father is legendary two-time Oscar-winning director George Stevens, whose films ranged from Astaire and Rogers musicals, Gunga Din, The More the Merrier and Woman of the Year, to, following World War II, a string of immortal classics including A Place in the Sun, Giant, Shane and The Diary of Anne Frank. The 2020 Best Supporting Actor lineup, which included performances that ranged from 43 to 56 minutes long, proved that high screen times are fairly common in the category. Six actors have won the award with over one hour of screen time, while an additional 18 nominees have passed that mark. Here is a look at the 10 performances that rank as the longest of them all (and here are the 10 longest winners):
10. Jeff Bridges (“Thunderbolt and Lightfoot”)
1 hour, 6 minutes, 23 seconds (57.74% of the film)
After Mickey Rooney and Sal Mineo, Bridges became the third man to receive two acting Oscar nominations by age 25, and there has not been another in the 45 years since. His second bid for playing the titular Lightfoot also earned him a spot on this list and was the 11th nominated supporting male performance to have over one hour of screen time. Bridges finally scored his first win at age 60, as a lead in “Crazy Heart,...

A bona fide film classic, George Stevens’ movie is less revered as an excellent adaptation of Theodore Dreiser than for its intense, almost hallucinatory romantic scenes between Montgomery Clift and Elizabeth Taylor. A guileless poor boy tries to succeed above his economic background and entangles himself between two very different women. I guess the Academy wasn’t ready to take the glamorous young MGM beauty seriously: both Clift and their co-star Shelley Winters received acting nominations, but not Liz. Stevens’ first ‘fifties picture is perhaps the most balanced of his ‘heavy’ and ‘important’ works, a tragedy that’s too deeply felt to be merely ponderous.

Another 3-D breakthrough, this time for a Paramount musical rescued from oblivion and remastered by the 3-D Archive. Rhonda Fleming and Gene Barry star in a blend of songs and Alaskan adventure filmed in downtown Hollywood. The depth effects are great, but the big surprise is Teresa Brewer, the radio star turned one-shot movie musical wonder. Her voice resurrects memories of pop vocals just prior to the arrival of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

All of the things you've heard about The Affair Season 3?
You're about to put them to the test.
Showtime has released The Affair Season 3 Episode 1 a little over a week early.
It will have the bad words bleeped and all that fun stuff, but if you can't wait, or if you don't yet have Showtime and have been wondering if it's worth it, now's your chance to do some exploring.
The story picks up three years later.
And it also picks up, from what I've heard, right in the middle of last season and three years.
It will probably explore every minute in between, too. Because this is The Affair, and that's what The Affair does and at which it excels.
Messing with your mind.
That's why we're also expecting a fifth perspective to be added to the third season. The more the merrier, right?

You can't find a city of the Housewives where several women haven't followed in my footsteps and attempted booze," she wrote in her blog. "Bring it on. The more the merrier. It is a brutal...

Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis are expecting their second child together.
The Hollywood couple's baby son Otis will celebrate his second birthday on Wednesday (April 20), and his mum has presented him with an early surprise present - the news he is set to become a big brother.
Taking to her Instagram page on Monday (April 18), Olivia, 32, confirmed the happy news by posting a black and white photo of herself sitting beside Otis, with their stomachs on display.
"Matching baby bumps" she wrote alongside the shot, in which she beamed down at her little boy as she sat cross legged on a bed wearing black underwear and an open white shirt, with a visible bump already on display.
Meanwhile, little Otis grins up at his mother as he sits cross legged beside her with his white T-shirt rolled up.
Olivia recently told People magazine that she and Jason, 40, were ready for another baby.

Gal Gadot is doing her best to be a Wonder-ful role model for superhero-loving boys and girls. The star stressed the importance of being a strong female example for all ages including her daughter Alma. "I have a 4-year-old daughter and she adores princesses at the same time she will tell me the princess is so weak, she falls asleep and the prince will come and kiss her and save her and he is the hero," Gadot shared at the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice press conference in Los Angeles on Friday. Is The Asylum’s Santa’s Little Yelpers a hidden Poundland Christmas gem? Er, read on to find out…
Santa’s Little Yelpers (originally: Golden Winter, a name presumably changed to avoid sounding like something a sexual deviant would pick from the menu of a shady massage parlour) is a Christmas kids’ film made by The Asylum.
The Asylum, as a rule, does not make good films. Appreciating that, among the knock-off ‘mockbusters’ and Netflix-plumping mega-monster flicks, might there sit a shiny gem of a Christmas picture? A movie, yes, written in under ten days for less cash than the average parent spent on Minions Kinder Eggs this summer, but a real bobby-dazzler nonetheless?
No.
To begin with, Santa’s not even in it. That means the titular little yelpers—Rory (likes jumping out of boxes), Snoozer (narcoleptic), Tinkle (incontinent), Jumper (no discernible character traits) and Scarf...

Rex Ingram in 'The Thief of Bagdad' 1940 with tiny Sabu. Actor Rex Ingram movies on TCM: Early black film performer in 'Cabin in the Sky,' 'Anna Lucasta' It's somewhat unusual for two well-known film celebrities, whether past or present, to share the same name.* One such rarity is – or rather, are – the two movie people known as Rex Ingram;† one an Irish-born white director, the other an Illinois-born black actor. Turner Classic Movies' “Summer Under the Stars” continues today, Aug. 11, '15, with a day dedicated to the latter. Right now, TCM is showing Cabin in the Sky (1943), an all-black musical adaptation of the Faust tale that is notable as the first full-fledged feature film directed by another Illinois-born movie person, Vincente Minnelli. Also worth mentioning, the movie marked Lena Horne's first important appearance in a mainstream motion picture.§ A financial disappointment on the...

Continuing the tradition of brisk pre-Code films, Joel McCrea’s occasional appearances in Gregory La Cava’s 1933 Bed of Roses serve as strange moral medium between the wanton hedonism of the lead Constance Bennett and the upcoming censorship of the era. Screenwriter Wanda Tuchock’s story of jail-hopping prostitutes-on-the-side seems like a victory lap for vice-ridden cinematic world of the early 30s, including flippant talk of suicide, heavily implied sex, liberal boozing, and poking fun at previous attempts of government sponsored moral judgment (“The Eighteenth Amendment is a law, and as a law should be enforced until it stops being a law”). The film begins in a prison as Bennett’s Lorry Evans and partner-in-crime Minnie (Pert Kelton) walk out of their cells, trash-talking life outside in radio-ready cadence and street-ready slang. They have short hair, hats tipped on the side of their head (I assume gravity worked differently in...

Lenny Bruce: Dustin Hoffman in the 1974 Bob Fosse movie. Lenny Bruce movie review: Polemical stand-up comedian merited less timid biopic (Oscar Movie Series) Bob Fosse's 1974 biopic Lenny has two chief assets: the ever relevant free speech issues it raises and the riveting presence of Valerie Perrine. The film itself, however, is only sporadically thought-provoking or emotionally gripping; in fact, Lenny is a major artistic letdown, considering all the talent involved and the fertile material at hand. After all, much more should have come out of a joint effort between director Fosse, fresh off his Academy Award win for Cabaret; playwright-screenwriter Julian Barry, whose stage version of Lenny earned Cliff Gorman a Tony Award; two-time Best Actor Oscar nominee Dustin Hoffman (The Graduate, Midnight Cowboy); and cinematographer Bruce Surtees (Play Misty for Me, Blume in Love). Their larger-than-life subject? Lenny Bruce, the stand-up comedian who became one of the...

The Most Dangerous Game. Courtesy of Rko Radio Pictures Inc./Photofest.Early in his career as a leading man, Joel McCrea was cast in two films about dangerous animals on the loose. Using the same jungle sets, the same directors (Irving Pichel and Ernest B. Schoedsack), and even the same stars (Fay Wray and Robert Armstrong) as their upcoming King Kong (1933), Rko’s production of The Most Dangerous Game (1932) submitted to economic shortcuts. Both adventure films would be made at the same time by organizing the same constituents in different roles. Even our hero McCrea would be asked to cross over to Team Kong, only to pull out thanks to thesesame frugal actions. Within this year of production McCrea’s star power had already exceeded what the studios could afford him.The Most Dangerous Game’s first reveal of McCrea’s Bob reveals him wearing a sport shirt adorned with...

Joel McCrea, Charles Coburn, and Jean Arthur in The More the MerrierWriting about acting is hard. Or rather, avoiding bad writing about acting is hard. When starting this article I nearly fell into that dichotomous peril of guessing which little actions were choices made by the actor himself or the director in charge. That’s a dumb, unfruitful game that would warrant nothing more than self-congratulation if some historical figure were to admit how correct I was. Yet, that dumb, unfruitful notion was the first frame of this article, likely spawned from the innumerable like-minded articles about acting. I’m being this transparent because I’ve taken the call-to-arms from Kent Jones in the most recent issue of Film Comment. In his article, Jones lists the pratfalls critics take when talking about acting, more often than not relying on conventional wisdom about the mythos surrounding certain actors and conventional wisdom...

Teresa Wright in 'Shadow of a Doubt': Alfred Hitchcock heroine (image: Joseph Cotten about to strangle Teresa Wright in 'Shadow of a Doubt') (See preceding article: "Teresa Wright Movies: Actress Made Oscar History.") After scoring with The Little Foxes, Mrs. Miniver, and The Pride of the Yankees, Teresa Wright was loaned to Universal – once initial choices Joan Fontaine and Olivia de Havilland became unavailable – to play the small-town heroine in Alfred Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt. (Check out video below: Teresa Wright reminiscing about the making of Shadow of a Doubt.) Co-written by Thornton Wilder, whose Our Town had provided Wright with her first chance on Broadway and who had suggested her to Hitchcock; Meet Me in St. Louis and Junior Miss author Sally Benson; and Hitchcock's wife, Alma Reville, Shadow of a Doubt was based on "Uncle Charlie," a story outline by Gordon McDonell – itself based on actual events.

It was a pretty stellar year once again for cinematography and I don't envy the members of the American Society of Cinematographers (Asc) their duty of narrowing it down to the top tier. Last year they didn't even bother narrowing — they settled on a whopping seven nominees. Why not? The more the merrier when the work is this good. No such luck this year, however, as we're back to five. And I must say, with two excellent pieces of work this year, I'm super bummed that Robert Elswit didn't make this list. I would have liked to see Bradford Young get the love, too, but I have no doubt he'll get his laurels in due time. "Birdman," "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and "The Imitation Game" remain strong as the only films so far to pick up nods from all guilds (we'll see how that shifts throughout the day). "The Imitation Game...

Jean Arthur films on TCM include three Frank Capra classics Five Jean Arthur films will be shown this evening, Monday, January 5, 2015, on Turner Classic Movies, including three directed by Frank Capra, the man who helped to turn Arthur into a major Hollywood star. They are the following: Capra's Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, You Can't Take It with You, and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington; George Stevens' The More the Merrier; and Frank Borzage's History Is Made at Night. One the most effective performers of the studio era, Jean Arthur -- whose film career began inauspiciously in 1923 -- was Columbia Pictures' biggest female star from the mid-'30s to the mid-'40s, when Rita Hayworth came to prominence and, coincidentally, Arthur's Columbia contract expired. Today, she's best known for her trio of films directed by Frank Capra, Columbia's top director of the 1930s. Jean Arthur-Frank Capra...

Apologies for my radio silence yesterday. Off my game I was for the entire day plus which means I'm know 36 hours behind on writing projects. Hooray. Nevertheless, because Emmy nominations are still very much on my mind after the initial response and the main titles detour (oh don't pretend you aren't still thinking about them) I polled a few members of Team Experience about their feelings. And here's what they had to say on four questions. Answer them yourself in the comments, too. The more the merrier.
What's the Nomination That Most Perplexes You?
Adam Armstrong: Kristen Wiig – The Spoils of Babylon. When I read her name among the nominees, I was like:

Andrew Kendall: So many options, but it's impossible for me to let Christina Hendricks in Mad Men just pass - for so many reasons. Everyone loves Joan and Hendricks is one...

If you’re a long time comic book reader, the chances are that quite a few of your friends, as newcomers to the genre (no doubt attracted by the big budget escapades of this summer’s Hollywood heroes), will be seeking you out and requesting a company-specific reading list or two.

Ever since it was announced that Batman vs Superman- the tentative title for WB/DC’s sequel to Man of Steel- was moved to May 6, 2016, all eyes have been on Marvel. See, Marvel announced long ago that May 6 of that year was when the studio was going to launch the first of its Phase Three films. They never announced what the film would be, but they made claim to that date. Then months later, amid reports that Warner Bros was making adjustments to its DC plans (including my exclusive assertion from someone in-the-know that Batman vs Superman / Jla would now be filming back-to-back), they announced they’d be co-habitating May 6.
IGN had the chance to ask Marvel honcho Kevin Feige, point blank, if the Avengers studio was going to shift the release of its first Phase Three movie. He started with this opening line: “The more the merrier.” He then continued,...

The more the merrier, right Kylie? On Aug. 22, the reality star headed out in her best teeny-bopper look with her hair done up in not one, but Two buns! Do you love her age-appropriate look? Vote below!
Kylie Jenner just turned 16 on Aug. 10, and though she usually goes for styles that look way above her age, she was out sporting a much more youthful look while going on a shopping trip on Aug. 22.
Kylie Jenner’s Youthful Hairstyle
Double ponytails are usually a girl’s go-to for that “schoolgirl” look, but Kylie decided to put her own spin on the classic. She instead went for a tighter style with two buns done up perfectly. Talk about taking a risk!
Kylie was definitely the belle of the Calabasas ball with this playful look, and it’s actually nice to see her embrace her sweet sixteen youth instead of opting for overly mature styles.

Director James Nguyen’s “Birdemic 2: The Resurrection” is either the dumbest movie ever made or a calculated slice of comedy gold. I honestly can’t figure it out. Weeeeee're ba-aaack.
Katey and Joe attended the sneak Lincoln preview at the Nyff and lived to tell the cel-phone free tale. Nick forces yours truly, Nathaniel, into an aca-awkward confession and the only movie that everyone has seen is Pitch Perfect which is clearly 100% appropriate for an Oscar-focused podcast. Certain to sweep!
Topics include but are not limited to:
Anna Kendrick being so over it in Pitch Perfect. Sally Field being over the top of it in Lincoln. Helen Hunt being on top of it (John Hawkes) in The Sessions. Nicole Kidman killing it in The Paperboy. Supporting Actress doubling up on it. Elle Fanning giggling through it for Ginger & Rosa Ben Affleck, Amy Adams, Molly Ringwald (???) and More!
