Loved The Music In Here!
ccthemovieman-11 August 2007
Anyone who loves some "swinging' jazz," will lose this cartoon.

The maid is stepping out for a hot night on the town. I least I got that impression with the colorful dress, garter belt and the rest. I laughed when she tested her necklace, the one with green and red jewels. She hit the green and the word "go" lit up, red for "stop!"

The moment she's out door, Tom rushes to the window, whistles to his buddies out near the garbage can and holds up a sign that reads, "O.K. For the Party." They yell "yippee" and literally fly through the window. In no time, the place is jumping. The hot jazz music in here, by the way, is fantastic! These cats know how to party!

Unfortunately, the music is keeping the mouse awake and little Jerry turns out to be party pooper. The rest of the cartoon involves his attempts at silencing the music and the cats silencing him! There are excellent sight gags in this one....and some justice at the very end.

Thoroughly pleasant and enjoyable
TheLittleSongbird17 June 2010
Saturday Evening Puss isn't the best Tom and Jerry cartoon I have seen, but it is very funny, pleasant and enjoyable. The story doesn't really hold any new surprises and the ending wasn't as impressive as the rest of the cartoon, but everything else is fine. The animation is very colourful and lively, and the sight gags are very, very clever and inventive. Tom, Jerry and Mammy Two Shoes are endearing and likable still, but what made the cartoon was the soundtrack. I loved it, it was catchy, memorable and upbeat, the sort of soundtrack I love in cartoons. Overall, a very pleasant and enjoyable Tom and Jerry cartoon, that works well on re-watches. 9/10 Bethany Cox

The ribald offerings of the Groaning Fat Cat . . .
pixrox129 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
. . . are unable to be reviewed in the traditional format. Many if not most Tom and Jerry films have title elements causing the Evil Censorship Bots to cover-up, delete, hide and squelch any comment from regular users that dares type out the name of that which is being commented upon. There could be exceptions to this rule. We all suffered through K-12 classes riddled with "Teacher's Pets," who monopolized all the top grades by simply spelling their names correctly on tests and assignments. This site features similar Elites, who can cuss up a blue streak during reviews and be posted as pure as the driven snow. If you're up to doing Internet 101-type research, you'll soon find out who these malingering miscreants are, and what they do to curry favor with the Evil Bots.

Saturday night with a great cartoon.
Antzy8814 August 2001
Warning: Spoilers
* This has a spoiler of sorts, but not about the cartoon's storyline *

One Saturday night, the black maid decides to go and play bridge at a club, leaving Tom alone. Tom then invites three cat friends (including the black cat, Butch) into the house for a party with loud music, which disturbs Jerry. Jerry then tries to get rid of the feline fiends!

This is a funny cartoon, and has a bit of a twist at the end!

There have been two versions of this that I have seen: the original one with the black maid intact, and the other where she was replaced by a white woman (who also had the same drawl as the original maid, and did some completely different actions at the beginning and at the bridge club in which the sound effects and dialogue made no sense) -- naturally the former is superior, especially as later on in the other version the sound effects go out of synch with the actions on the screen. NOTE: If you see this on video or DVD, there is one point where you can see the maid's face if you use Pause! (Normally you can only see her from the chest down)

So far, my favorite Tom and Jerry episode
scorzine17 June 2012
Out of all of the Tom and Jerry episodes I see, this is my favorite of them all. This is, to start off, a great episode. I love the music and all the voices in this one. The plot is good as well: Tom's owner is out so Tom throws a party in his house and Jerry tries to stop it. I also love the part where Jerry calls Tom's owner and tells her about the party, and she comes home furious. The best/funniest part of that scene is where she throws Tom and the cats out of the house, and they form a totem pole. I laugh so hard every time I see that part. Overall, I recommend this cartoon to all Tom and Jerry fans, whether they've seen it before or not.

Who knew a fest of jazz music could fit into six minutes?
LTPHarry20 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Saturday Evening Puss' plot is simple - Mammy Two-Shoes has gone out for her Saturday-evening bridge club, and Tom takes advantage on the situation by inviting his ally cat friends Butch, Lightning and Topsy for a loud jazz party. Meanwhile, Jerry is disturbed and is finding every way to stop it.

As usual, Scott Bradley's composition is nothing short but excellent, showcasing how music can tell the story. His compositions of different jazz songs also sets the mood of the cartoon as well.

As usual, it has all the classic slapstick that Tom and Jerry is known for, but this time with the other alley cats joining in the war against Jerry.

And this is one of the rare instances where both the cat and mouse lose! Although Jerry calls up Mammy Two-Shoes and kicks all the cats out, it's not long until the music Mammy plays just so happens to be the same music Jerry was not thrilled to hear.

A fun time indeed if you haven't seen this cartoon, but you likely already have.

Cats: The Original Musical
CuriosityKilledShawn13 October 2008
Mammy-Two-Shoes (dubbed to sound less 'racist' to appease the narrow-minded PC brigade in the version that I saw) goes out for the night, leaving Tom alone with the house to himself. He immediately invites a bunch of alley cats around for a party, causing no end of disturbance to Jerry, who doesn't take kindly to their music.

After attempts at silencing them fail, Jerry is tortured and tied up, but he still has enough in him to call Mammy-Two-Shoes (the number he dials is nothing but 1-1-1-1-1) and get Tom in trouble.

It's an average cartoon, which nothing to make it really stand out above the rest with the exception of two frames in which you actually get to see Mammy-Two-Shoes' face. Otherwise; bland.

Tom Takes Advantage of Mammy Two Shoes' Absence and Throws a Party at Her House!
Kalashnikovin9 July 2022
Tom and Jerry are my Favorite Cartoon of All Life, They have Excellent Shorts and this is one of them, Saturday Evening Puss I remember seeing it on Television in a Morning and it was excellent! I saw it again recently and it is so good as I remembered!.

Making a Cartoon about a Party is an Original Idea at this point of Tom and Jerry, in addition to Iconic characters such as Butch and the Orange Cat, this is a Tom and Jerry cartoon of Short duration with only 6 Minutes with 30 Seconds but Those 6 minutes are worth it!.

One of its positive points is the appearance of the Other Cats like Butch and the Orange Cat, which are excellent characters that make the cartoon laugh!.

The Animation is still beautiful and too fluid, the Backgrounds look exquisite as well as the Objects like the Piano which looks very Realistic and Detailed.

Scott Bradley, as always, provides quality music that fits perfectly into the atmosphere of a party!.

The Voice Acting is Top Notch and it shows in how Well Acted Mammy Two Shoes is!.

The sound effects as always are Decent and remain in the Atmosphere.

In itself, Saturday Evening Puss is a Great Cartoon that has a fast pace and is excellently managed, it has great scenes like Tom delivering food to his Colleagues or the End with Jerry getting a Counterproductive Victory, for everything I said earlier Saturday Evening Puss gets a 9!

The material isn't great, but it is watchable
Horst_In_Translation24 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
"Saturday Evening Puss", which has an R-rated ring to it by today's standards, is another Hanna Barbera MGM cartoon and this one was released back in 1950, so it is already over 65 years old. As always with these, there is not too much voice acting in here, but Lillian Randolph is featured prominently. It is relatively unusual that the first 60 seconds belong to her character, but here it is true as we see her leave for a card game with friends. And she is hardly out of the door when Tom invites all his buddies over to have a party. Jerry, who also takes unusually long to be seen for the first time, is not amused as he just wants his calm and when nothing helps, he finally calls Tom's owner showing us he is able to speak human language. Another humanization aspect here is that the cats never even try to eat Jerry, even after they catch him. This is probably not one for Tom lovers as the moment the party starts, he is just one of the cats and doesn't stand out anymore. The one who does is a smaller cat though, one of the best aspects of the cartoon and the main reason I gave it a thumbs-up. I wish he was in more of these T&J cartoons. Finally Jerry gets his fair share too for being a party pooper and a telltale Eventually, the watch here was really nothing special. The music doesn't stand out either. All in all, a really close call, but I still recommend the watch, even if it is nowhere near 1950's best in animation and nowhere near T&J's watch. It shows that the material was really thin as this one does not even reach the 6.5-minute mark.

pretty good Tom and Jerry
planktonrules30 June 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Tom's owner is going out to play cards with some friends. Tom takes advantage of this by inviting some friends to come over and they spend all their time making a racket listening to Jazz records and playing along with the music. The sound is driving Jerry crazy, so he decides to fight back. A few times Jerry gets the better of these four cats, but in the end he is tied to the blinds and is helpless--until he phones the owner and tells her what's afoot. Oddly, Jerry can apparently speak in this episode but although the lady hears it, the audience cannot. She returns home to find the partying cats and throws them out--only to herself turn on loud music and Jerry isn't much better off than with the cats.

This cartoon features excellent animation, the usual Tom and Jerry violence and good production values. A decent but not super-outstanding cartoon--but considering it's vintage Tom and Jerry, it's still well worth seeing.

Cool cats.
BA_Harrison29 September 2014
When Mammy Two Shoes leaves the house to go to her Lucky Seven Saturday Night Bridge Club, her mischievous cat Tom seizes the opportunity to host a wild party for his alley-cat pals. Jerry the mouse, who is trying to get to sleep, attempts to stop the commotion...

The cat vs mouse action in Saturday Evening Puss is fairly routine, but what makes this cartoon slightly more memorable is the sight of Tom and his pals partying like crazy, the hairy hepcats generating some seriously groovy jazz tunes (could their antics have been the inspiration for a similar scene in Disney's The Aristocats?).

An ironic ending sees Tom and his friends thrown out of the house by Mammy, much to Jerry's delight, only for the mouse to have his sleep disturbed when Mammy puts on a record at top volume

One of the more remarkable Tom&Jerrys
ingemar-41 October 2011
Three things make this Tom&Jerry cartoon stand out from the crowd:

  • We see more of Mammy Two-Shoes than ever, not just her face but also a bit of her social life.

  • It is one of the relatively few cartoons where Jerry doesn't get a total triumph at the end.

  • It is filled with good 50's jazz music.

And it is even more. Tom has a whole gang of friends, and the cat(s)-vs-mouse chase, although basically the same as usual, is filled with gags around musical instruments. Jerry is even reshaping into the musical instruments he hear.

Finally, it is one where censorship has done most work, with two revisions, first replacing Mammy Two-Shoes voice with a smoother, bland voice, and then redrawing a lot of it to replace her with a skinny white girl. And every change made it worse (except possibly replacing cards by dancing). I find it hard to see how Mammy Two-Shoes could be severely racist where she is clearly the master of her house, not always obvious in other cartoons, and replacing an overweight middle-aged black woman with an almost anorectic white girl is hardly a step forward, limiting both age, weight and skin color to something considered "right". Is it a good move to remove strong, independent black women from the screen? I know the voice is cliché but nothing more, and many new movies are worse (the new Ladykillers, the Rush Hour series...). If Chris Tucker can make fun of "black language" why can't Mammy Two-Shoes?

So it has all the action and gags of an above average cartoon, but with these unique features on top. Not mind-blowing unique but quite significant.
