Fred M. Wilcox's 1956 sci-fi classic "Forbidden Planet" was a notably opulent affair, at least as sci-fi films go. Its budget at the time was only $1.96 million (which shakes out to about $22 million today) comparatively small to the historical epics Hollywood was overspending on at the time; "The Ten Commandments," for instance, cost a whopping $13 million, while 1956's Best Picture winner, "Around the World in 80 Days" cost about $6 million. "Forbidden Planet" was a production on par with 1953's "War of the Worlds," a colorful, large-scale production infused with fantastical spacecraft and weird robots. Robby (voiced by Marvin Miller), the robot featured in "Forbidden Planet," reportedly cost $125,000 to make — about a million in today's dollars.
The production designer on the film was Arthur Lonergan, the Oscar winner behind "The Oscar." Prior to "Forbidden Planet," Lonergan had an extensive career working on shows like "Mr. & Mrs. North," and on low-profile films like "Black Beauty,...

On the first Vampire Diaries episode of 2010, we see Damon save Elena's life, Elena return the favor... and then learn that Stefan once did the same for his human girlfriend.
Indeed, this is a burgeoning love triangle with a lot at stake. How did the show make an impact in its first installment after a lengthy hiatus? We review "Bloodlines" and ask questions about it below...
Ignorant Elena or Delightful Damon? Without her vervain necklace on, did Elena give in too easily to Damon's charms? Or was she just acting nice in order to avoid getting killed? We were leaning toward the former, until the most startling action of the night: Elena actually saved Damon's life. Considering all he's done, it may have seemed like a stretch to some that she'd plead for Damon to be spared, but think about it:
Elena is in a vulnerable, confused, angry state. Damon...

Before the release of New Moon, nearly 8,000 PopWatch readers voted in our "Team Edward or Team Jacob" poll, with 62 percent being emphatically Team Edward. As promised, we're doing a post-premiere poll to find out if Jacob's onscreen transformation — and the pain Edward put Bella through — has earned the werewolf any points. Vote again after the jump. A more interesting question has turned out to be whether Bella is really the best role model in the film. We're flashing a giant Spoiler Alert here so we can have an open discussion. Let's be clear: It's not a question of abstaining from premarital sex,...

There are at least two things causing apprehension in tonight's episode of Ghost Whisperer and they both involve daddy issues. "Cause for Alarm," the fifth episode of the fifth season, kicks off with the introduction of 24 actor Chad Lowe as Nathan Weiss, one of Eli's new patients. Nathan is a wealthy software genius in his early 40s who runs his own company. Unfortunately, all the money and security in the world are not enough to prevent an angry ghost from haunting him.

On this week's episode of The Ghost Whisperer, Chad Lowe guest stars.
What role does he play? And who else should viewers expect to see before the year is through? TV Guide Magazine asked those questions of producer Ian Sander...
On Lowe: "He plays a guy named Nathan, a high profile client of Jamie Kennedy’s psychologist character, Eli. He is a software mogul with an obsessive compulsive disorder and paranoia."
On Aiden in the episode: "Aidan is an empath, which means he is able to empathize with some of these ghosts. Melinda is able to have visions through him. And this episode accelerates that dynamic more than any other."
On future guest stars: "On November 13, we have Ally McBeal’s Greg Germann and Entourage’s Perrey Reeves playing a warring husband and wife real estate couple in a really fun War of the Roses-themed episode."

Established 1974! Our news column is getting weary of these Friday night TV genre marathons.
Sf TV
Bad news for Dollhouse, as Entertainment Weekly’s Michael Ausiello reports. Fox Won’T be airing Dollhouse during November (a ratings Sweeps month). The ratings-challenged show will then return December 4, airing two episodes back to back every Friday (probably until they run out). Repeats of House and Bones will substitute on Fridays in November. See this link.
Starlog favorite Katee Sackhoff will be the next genre personality (after Summer Glau and Wil Wheaton) to make a pilgrimage to The Big Bang Theory. The Battlestar Galactica heroine will appear on the November 23 episode.
Atypically, tonight (Thursday) only features One new genre entry: Flashforward (“Gimme Some Truth,” ABC, 8 p.m. Est). The CW fields two repeats: the just-renewed The Vampire Diaries (“The Night of the Comet,” 8 p.m.) and Supernatural (“Sympathy for the Devil,” the fifth season opener,...

CBS' double threat "Ghost Whisperer" and "Medium" will be back next week despite the Baseball league which other networks have avoided. The previews to the October 23 episodes have been unveiled, one involving a dead sister and the other involving a baby.
In "Cause for Alarm", Melinda lends Eli a hand with a patient who thinks he's being watched by his sister's ghost. Meanwhile, Melinda and Jim are concerned when Aiden talks about his shiny friends that aren't ghosts but something else.
In "Baby Fever", when Allison investigates an infant's kidnapping, Joe worries when she becomes too attached to the little boy. Also, Bridgette and Joe are amazed when Marie plays the clarinet perfectly without one lesson while Bridgette struggles to learn to play.
Since being paired, CBS has frequently won the Friday nights. In recent weeks, both are spinning above 8 million viewers which is by a difference of 1 million to the show below it.
