A voice from the past
Petey-1011 October 2011
Linda Varala is a doctor and a widow. She happens to see a face from the past, captain of industry Erik Ramberg. They shared one romantic evening together 26 years ago.She starts calling her, not revealing her real name and calls herself Pepi.Erik is in an unhappy marriage and realizes she wants Pepi and has to find out who she is.Maybe true happiness is awaiting these two now, many years later.Tyttö Kuunsillalta (1953) is directed by Matti Kassila. He won a Jussi award for Best Direction.I watched today this terrific director, who's now 87, talking about his life and career on the show Mansikkapaikka. The movie is based on Hella Wuolijoki's radio play from 1951.I watched this interesting movie on a VHS, which I found from the library.I can't think of any actors doing the leading couple better than Ansa Ikonen and Joel Rinne.Kerstin Nylander is marvelous as his wife Flora Ramberg.Matti Ranin and Ilmi Parkkari are superb as her children, Juhani and Silja.Vilho Siivola is terrific as Erland Varala.Eero Roine is very good as Judge Lindman.I really enjoyed watching those moments where Pepi called Erik. Some people may find it problematic that 56-year old Joel Rinne and 40-year old Ansa Ikonen played much younger people in those flashback sequences.I only found it fascinating, that these middle-aged actors could once more represent the youth.
