Revenge has never been served colder than you see it dished out in Netflix's second trailer for "The Harder They Fall," the revisionist Black western with an all-star cast to die for. And as you can see in the trailer, plenty of folks do die at their hands. This new look at the film seems to encompass more of the entire story than the first trailer released back in June, which focused mostly on the opening breakout of Idris Elba's fearsome villain Rufus Buck.
Here's the official synopsis:

Netflix remains out in the cold when it comes to the Cannes lineup. The festival and the streamer, despite ongoing conversations, are still unable to bridge their differences and so, once again, the Croisette will be devoid of Netflix movies.
Cannes insists on a local theatrical release for movies playing in Competition but has previously offered the streamer non-Competition slots. ‘Out of Competition’ hasn’t appealed to the streamer.
Festival chief Thierry Fremaux reiterated the status quo today (via a translator): “The festival has a rule that films in Competition must have a local theatrical release. Netflix wishes to have its movies in Competition and on their platform. Since 2017, Netflix hasn’t agreed to play its films outside of Competition but we talk a lot. There were two potential films that may go to other festivals. We regret that we haven’t been able to negotiate their Out Of Competition presence.

Things are happening fast for Jonathan Majors. In January at the Sundance Film Festival, the actor became an instant breakout, with a winning performance in Joe Talbot’s wistful “The Last Black Man in San Francisco.” The movie finds Majors playing quirky artist and playwright Montgomery “Mont” Allen, and the role recently scored the 30-year-old Yale School of Drama graduate Gotham and Spirit Awards nominations — but he’s unfazed by the sudden acclaim.
“To me, an award just means your peers are saying, ‘He contributed to the form,’ and I want to contribute to the form much as possible,” Majors said. “I’ve been lucky enough to be busy, but it’s still strange at times. My manager will tell me that so-and-so wants to interview me, and I say, ‘Me? Are you sure they have the right guy?’ So it’s probably just an adjustment I need to make.

If you somehow missed the “Cats” trailer from earlier today, then you probably should go check it out to remind yourself that Idris Elba, one of the best living actors, is playing a weird, evil feline in the upcoming film. Elia Kazan never stopped making great pictures, but much of his output after 1952 was politically defensive in nature. This powerful indictment of American media madness is a genuine classic, but it also points up the need for ‘good folk’ to sometimes betray their associates. The target this time around is the most kill-worthy monster in the history of sardonic satire: Lonesome Rhodes, a faux-populist master manipulator of the pushover public. Kazan and Budd Schulberg’s premise has come to pass in real life, but their silver bullet of truth has lost its power: even when unmasked publicly, some media monsters thrive.

Noir City: Hollywood — The 21st Annual Los Angeles Festival of Film NoirBy Alex Divine DeleonThe Noir City Festival has now come of age and the 21st edition which opened at the venerable Hollywood landmark Egyptian Theatre on Friday, March 29, 2019, will this year display twenty uncut gems on ten consecutive nights running in strict chronological order from ‘Trapped’ (1949) to ‘Cry Tough’ (1959). In essence a cannily selected survey of the Hollywood decade of the fifties from an underbelly angle such as only the Film Noir Foundation has the guts and integrity to reveal. Many of these old pictures have been rescued from oblivion by the cutting edge preservation skills of the UCLA film department.
Think the 1950s were buttoned-down and conservative? Think again.
In the 2019 edition of Noir City: Hollywood you will experience the rush — through a lens, darkly — of a turbulent and transitional time in American history, culture, and cinema. Nothing would ever be the same.

Part of the fun in rounding up recent books about (or connected to) cinema is the sheer diversity of releases. This latest collection features a dive into this history of Hollywood legends, lots more Force Awakens, compelling reads from two fascinating critics, texts highlighting the art of Batman v. Superman and The Little Prince, and more. Plus, if you’ve been coveting Constable Zuvio mentions, you’re finally in luck.
Movie Freak: My Life Watching Movies by Owen Gleiberman (Hachette Books)

In Movie Freak, his unguardedly personal memoir, he talks of films loved (Blue Velvet, Manhunter), friendships dashed (with the likes of Oliver Stone and Pauline Kael), and...

The Harder They Fall: Cohen Takes Us Back To Racial Stereotypes of Yore
Screenwriter Etan Cohen makes his directorial debut with Get Hard, a crass, generally low-brow situational adult comedy that valiantly tries to disguise its extreme lack of taste and forethought with the personas of its popular comedic stars Kevin Hart and Will Ferrell. In hindsight, maybe there’s a reason that the regular helmer of these Ferrell crafted boy child comedies Adam McKay, who gets a story credit here, didn’t oversee the project, since it never overcomes the ridiculously crippling antiquation of its initial set-up.
Had this been made somewhere in the 1980s, where we saw a slew of titles grappling with topical issues of racial stereotypes like 48 Hours with Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy, and on the comedic front, several pairings of Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder, this would have seemed regressive even then. But...

Breathless is not playing at this year’s Classic French Film Festival, but St. Louis classic French film fans get to see it on the big screen anyway! It’s part of the Mildred Lane Kemper Museum’s series A Critical Eye: Avant-Garde Cinema of the 1960s and is screening this Tuesday night (March 24th) at the Tivoli (6350 Delmar Blvd. University City, Mo). The show starts at 7pm. Admission is Free!
Breathless was remade in 1983 with Richard Gere and Valerie Kaprisky (remember her? Me neither). The remake, directed by Jim McBride, is excellent but has been hard to see in recent years. It will be available on Blu-ray on April 7th, which means this is a perfect time to take in the original to compare and contrast.
The part that Jean Luc-Godard played in The French New Wave was tremendous. Breathless (1960), with its innovative jump-cuts, catapulted Godard into international fame.

On the centennial anniversary of the birth of Oscar-winning On The Waterfront and A Face In The Crowd writer Budd Schulberg, his widow Betsy Schulberg has signed with Gersh to rep his estate. He died at 95 in 2009. The agency plans to steer several adaptations of his novels and reboots of his classic works. Schulberg wrote the Oscar-winning script for Elia Kazan’s On The Waterfront, and the novels What Makes Sammy Run?, The Disenchanted and The Harder They Fall. The son of a powerful Paramount exec, Schulberg had a boisterous and highly eventful life with his share of controversy. He famously became a friendly witness at the House Un-American Activities Committee, testifying about his time as a member of the Communist Party and naming eight Hollywood colleagues who were also members. He also served in the Oss in WWII and reportedly compiled evidence against and arrested Nazi propagandist director Leni Reifenstahl.

Humphrey Bogart movies: ‘The Maltese Falcon,’ ‘High Sierra’ (Image: Most famous Humphrey Bogart quote: ‘The stuff that dreams are made of’ from ‘The Maltese Falcon’) (See previous post: “Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall Movies.”) Besides 1948, 1941 was another great year for Humphrey Bogart — one also featuring a movie with the word “Sierra” in the title. Indeed, that was when Bogart became a major star thanks to Raoul Walsh’s High Sierra and John Huston’s The Maltese Falcon. In the former, Bogart plays an ex-con who falls in love with top-billed Ida Lupino — though both are outacted by ingénue-with-a-heart-of-tin Joan Leslie. Part of the Tony Scott: A Moving Target critical project. Go here for the project's description, index and links to project's other movement.
This is one "movement" of our exquisite corpse-style critical project, Tony Scott: A Moving Target, which coincidentally begins with a look at Crimson Tide, the same movie that begins the other movement. As outlined in the introduction to the entire project, this project began in my mind, as something fairly simple: a snaking continuum of scene analysis. This is only in part what resulted.
The varied responses I got back from my group—"mine" in the sense that it is the one I participated in, since Gina's contribution closes Movement B—seem to say as much about the participating critics as they do about Tony Scott's films and the overlap between the two: the perception of Scott's films and career. Fire, explosions and flares always play their own choreographic role in Tony Scott’s films. A machine gun roars, belching fire, and Scott’s trademark editing obeys the winking of these gunfire flashes. In the breathtaking finale of Domino—perhaps the director’s most personal and definitely most fragile film—the characters go as high as possible: to the 106th floor of a Las Vegas tower, in pursuit of an explosion. As there they are greeted by the mafia: Welcome to the Top of the World.
Why go so high? Domino is devoted to the slightly naïve belief in the invisible hands of fortune,...

Update: Starz to Air Magic City, Spartacus Marathons
Starz has announced that it will be running marathons of recent debut Magic City and its most popular series Spartacus, just in time for the malaise of summer TV.
Magic City has been slowly building in ratings and word-of-mouth, culminating in what is sure to be a strong finale. But before we get to the finale and the impending danger that faces both Ike and Stevie Evans, it's time to relive all the glamour, all the fashion, and all the mob ties. Beginning Friday, May 25th at 9:00, Magic City will be airing from the very beginning, all seven episodes popping up in chunks throughout the weekend. The season finale will be airing Friday, June 1st at 10:00, a week before the Spartacus marathon kicks off. Magic City has already been renewed for a second season.
For the first time, Spartacus will be airing in chronological order,...

Child actor-turned-writer Tony Blankley has died after losing his battle with stomach cancer. He was 63.
The social commentator passed away at the Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. on Saturday.
Blankley became a child star playing Rod Steiger's onscreen son in 1955 movie The Harder They Fall and also appeared in TV shows including Lassie and Highway Patrol.
He later turned his back on acting to focus on writing and politics, most notably serving as an adviser to Republican politician Newt Gingrich during the 1990s, when he was the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.
Gingrich says, "Tony was a very special person. Everybody in our alumni who have heard about it have felt something in their hearts because he was more than a great professional. He was a great human being, he was a caring and loving person, he was a tremendous amount of fun, remarkably erudite and educated, and we will all miss him deeply."
Danny DeVito has also paid tribute to the star, writing on his Twitter.com page, "Tony Blankley passed away condolences to his family. Gonna miss him on (radio show) Left Right and Center!"...
