From Neon Noir, the upcoming Brute 1976 is said to be a love letter to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Hills Have Eyes, with Joe Knetter (Twilight of the Dead) writing.
Deadline details, “Brute 1976 will begin with the story of Raquel and her girlfriend, whose car breaks down in the middle of nowhere as they travel to a photoshoot in the desert to celebrate Bicentennial unity. They stumble across an abandoned mine and explore it, while the photoshoot group replace her with make-up artist Sunshine and then find abandoned town Savage, which has a violent history but is the perfect place to take some photos.

‘Tis the season to be thankful. The dust has settled on Halloween, and November brings colder temps and the dreaded time change. As the holidays loom, many people take stock of their lives and express gratitude for what they have. As for horror movies, Thanksgiving gives our favorite genre a chance to explore themes of thankfulness while dishing up some delectable gore and practical effects. With John Grissmer’s Blood Rage and Herschell Gordon Lewis’ Blood Feast, which isn’t technically a holiday horror, it’s a season of family time and delicious bloodshed. We should be so grateful.
Blood Rage, written by Bruce Rubin, throbs with the coarseness of a claw hammer. Its mangled, DIY body parts are as essential to its charm as the grisly bursts of violence. Mark Soper plays double duty as two identical twins, Todd and Terry. As young boys, Terry slaughters two young teens...

When cinephiles of a certain sensibility talk about the best decades for horror, they’ll probably point to the 1980s with its explosion of cutting-edge special effects and home video-induced demand for material. Or they might point to the era of Universal Pictures’ domination in the 1930s, followed up then by the moody Val Lewton thrillers of the 1940s. Maybe even a very unpopular kid will try to make an argument for the 2010s, at least until everyone pulls the A24 hat over his eyes and kicks him out.
But moviegoers would be foolish to overlook the 1960s. The decade saw not only two amazing horror flicks from Alfred Hitchcock but also caught the genre in an interesting time of transition. Filmmakers built on the Gothic approach of previous decades by adding a psychological dimension, finding new chills in an established model. Furthermore, the decade saw the first steps toward the ho,...

The episode of Best Horror Movie You Never Saw covering 2001 Maniacs was Written by Cody Hamman, Narrated by Kier Gomes, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Produced by John Fallon and Tyler Nichols, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Robert Englund doing a demented Colonel Sanders impression. Lin Shaye putting on a deadly song and dance routine. Enough politically incorrect elements to offend pretty much everybody. Buckets of gore. Gratuitous nudity. And a cameo appearance by Eli Roth, playing his Cabin Fever character. Put all of this together and you get 2001 Maniacs (watch it Here). The director calls it a “splatstick” movie. Splatter combined with slapstick comedy. We call it The Best Horror Movie You Never Saw.
Herschell Gordon Lewis was a classy guy, but he specialized in making movies that were not classy. His aim was to give the grindhouse and drive-in crowds the things Hollywood wasn’t giving them. Noting...

In 1960, Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" brought the fear of monsters into a modern setting. Instead of creatures from the Black Lagoon or caped vampires in castles, the pioneering filmmaker forced audiences to think differently about the dangers lurking in their own backyards. From the butcher knife to the twist ending, it also presented the basic mechanics which would later define the slasher movie subgenre.
Throughout the following two decades, numerous other films, including 1974's "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre," laid the groundwork for the slasher boom of the 1980s. Other early entries, like 1964's "Blood Feast," toyed with grotesque images of severed limbs and tense stalking...

A person can agree with horror master Stephen King on the worst horror movie of all time or they can keep their own opinion since to be fair he is just another person. But the thing is that he’s an award-winning writer that’s been around long enough and written enough horror stories to know what makes a great horror story and what’s just a bunch of gore and horrible dialogue slapped together to produce a vomit-inducing experience. Thinking that he would give voice to any displeasure over a movie such as Blood Feast, a 1960s-era schlockfest that is all about

It will come as a surprise to no one that John Waters, as a wayward youth, once got arrested at the since-shuttered Carlin’s Drive-In in Baltimore. He used to spend lots of time at the local drive-ins, including Bengie’s Drive-In in Maryland, which is still open. Waters seems so synonymous with drive-ins, he even shot the final scene of 2000’s “Cecil B. Demented” at a local one.
“I spent a week in the drive-in filming that finale, so that almost cured me ever wanting to go back to the drive-in again,” Waters said during a recent in-person interview. The filmmaker donned an understated brown cloth mask, having just stepped out from his car after introducing the first in a double feature he programmed for the Provincetown International Film Festival over the weekend. After a few relatively quiet weeks to wrap up June’s home media releases, July comes roaring back with a slate of titles that genre fans will definitely want to add to their Blu-ray and DVD collections. Arrow Video has been staying extremely busy as of late, with three different releases coming out on Tuesday: Black Rainbow from Flash Gordon director Mike Hodges, Zombie for Sale, and Teruo Ishii’s Inferno of Torture. Criterion Collection is also celebrating an all-time sci-fi classic this Tuesday, The War of the Worlds, and if you haven’t had a chance to check it out on Shudder, Belzebuth is headed to both Blu-ray and DVD this week as well.

"If we get this thing on tape, this could make us famous!" High Octane Pictures has unveiled an official trailer for a low budget horror thriller film titled Rootwood, one of the latest offerings from German indie horror filmmaker Marcel Walz. This premiered last year at a small genre festival, and will be available on VOD in April coming up. Two students who host "The Spooky Hour" podcast together are hired by a Hollywood film producer to shoot a horror documentary about the curse of The Wooden Devil. Soon they will discover it might not just be an "urban legend" after all. The horror film co-stars scream queens Elissa Dowling and Felissa Rose, along with Tyler Gallant, Sarah French, Tiffani Fest, and Brandon Rhea. Big time reveal shot at the end of this trailer, but I guess that's the only way they can sell it and convince people to watch this.

In October 2016, Arrow Video USA released an astounding, 17-disc Blu-Ray package of films by exploitation king and Godfather of Gore, Herschell Gordon Lewis. The package contained 14 of Lewis’ finest—as well as some that were not so fine—exploitation gems of the 1960’s and 1970’s. The package focused on Lewis’ gore films, for which he is mostly remembered. However, the set also contained many of Lewis’ most beloved non-horror exploitation opuses such as Moonshine Mountain, Scum of the Earth, and She Devils on Wheels. Loaded with hours of documentaries, commentaries, and other extra features as well as a hardbound book, this set represented the pinnacle of collector’s items for hardcore Hgl fans, but at a cost that many fans could not afford. Shortly thereafter, Arrow began releasing the films in standalone packages that were priced in such a way that everyone could afford the discs.

1953’s House of Wax with Vincent Price cast a long shadow fairly early in the horror world; creepy Grand Guignol (in 3D no less) with a strong thread of vengeance gave us further goodies such as Tourist Trap (1979) and a recently reappraised remake in 2005. It’s not surprising then that TV would take a crack at molding its own vicious visage; what they came up with is a pilot film that executives deemed too shocking for the small screen – Chamber of Horrors (1966), a decidedly ghoulish take on necrophilia and murder mixed with breezy banter and chopped up body parts. I think the brass may have been right to send this one to the big screen.
Before you get too excited, we’re not talking Blood Feast here; it’s incredibly tame by today’s standards. No, it’s the subject matter itself which would send mom and dad into epileptic fits,...

If you are a horror movie aficionado then no introduction is needed for Blood Feast, nor to the films of Herschel Gordon Lewis in general. But just in case you’ve never heard of this pioneering no-budget epic, here’s a quick synopsis. Blood Feast is the story of an Egyptian caterer, Fuad Ramses, who is into the dark arts and has a need for human body parts. It just so happens a series of gruesome killings of young women around town are occurring. Detective Thornton, along with the help of the beautiful and unwitting Suzette Fremont, try to solve the case before every young co-ed in town disappears. Blood Feast was a sensation when it was first released to the grindhouse/drive-in circuit in 1963. Over the years it became the stuff of legend to horror fans everywhere with Fangoria magazine praising Lewis’ films in its pages,...

Guest Reviewer Lee Broughton is back, with a rodent roundup of horror, or more accurately, psychological suspense interrupted by a few salacious slayings. What would Mickey say?
The brief synopses of Daniel Mann’s Willard and Phil Karlson’s Ben that appeared in the horror movie books and magazines that kids in the UK loved to pore over during the late 1970s always gave the impression that this pair of killer rat films were hardcore horror shows.
In truth, the actual horror content of both films is relatively mild and infrequent. In spite of this, Willard and Ben still tend to be discussed in terms of their relation to the often more extreme movies that appeared in the “animals attack” cycle of horror films that flourished during the 1970s.
That particular subgenre represents something of a niche interest area that is governed by a pretty tight set of boundaries. The...

1963’s Blood Feast, the infamous gorefest from director Herschell Gordon Lewis, is a pox on our culture; grossly stupid, comically inept and depressingly nihilistic. A perfect film for 2017.
Lewis’s movie was released the same year that Patsy Cline and John Kennedy died, George Wallace turned away black students from an Alabama college and Martin Luther King was jailed in Birmingham. Betty Friedan wrote The Feminine Mystique and Sam Cooke recorded ”A Change Is Gonna Come”. In an already fractured country, those seismic shifts only deepened the decades-old divide along the Mason-Dixon line.
Meanwhile, in southernly states from Mississippi to Florida, Lewis and his production partner David Friedman were busy...

Arrow
1985 / 1:85 / Street Date August 8, 2017
Starring: Jeffrey Combs, Barbara Crampton
Cinematography: Mac Ahlberg
Film Editor: Lee Percy
Written by Stuart Gordon, Dennis Paoli, William Norris
Produced by Brian Yuzna
Music: Richard Band
Directed by Stuart Gordon
Released in 1985, Stuart Gordon’s Re-Animator remains the grandest of Grand Guignols, a viscerally entertaining comedy that is just grindhouse enough for fans of Blood Feast and arthouse enough for connoisseurs of Francis Bacon’s more grisly canvases.
Originally scripted for Chicago’s Organic Theater Company by Gordon and co-writers Dennis Paoli and William Norris, Re-Animator was based on H. P. Lovecraft’s short story, Herbert West – Re-Animator, first published in 1922. Set in the blandly generic college town of Arkham, Massachusetts, the action revolves in and around the classrooms of stately Miskatonic University’s medical school and the sterilized atmosphere of the academy’s dank morgue evoked so well by Mac Ahlberg’s lush cinematography.

Check out this cool poster for Seed 2 director Marcel Walz’s forthcoming remake of Herschell Gordon Lewis’ Blood Feast, which stars genre veterans Robert Rusler (Nightmare on Elm St. 2), Caroline Williams (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Sadie Katz (Wrong Turn 6), and Sophie Monk (The Hills Run Red).
Blood Feast will make its Us debut on June 23rd.
Fuad Ramses (Robert Rusler – A Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge, Vamp, Tales of Halloween) and his family have moved from the United States to France, where they run an American diner. Since business is not going too well, Fuad also works night shifts in a museum of ancient Egyptian culture. During these long, lonely nights he is repeatedly drawn to a statue representing the seductive ancient goddess Ishtar. He becomes more and more allured by the goddess as she speaks to him in visions. Eventually he succumbs to her deadly charms.

Let me see your heart!
Let me break something down real quick. I justifiably catch a reputation as being someone who likes to like things. And that’s true. Whenever I have time to share movie talk with folks, I want to talk about the things I love. Because, for me, it’s just too darn easy to fall down a rabbit hole of negativity. When I stumble across something that thrills me, I want to share it. Even still, sometimes I’m a bit abashed when it comes to how enthusiastic I tend to be about things. This is especially true when I find a great new-to-me trash-cinema film. Over Easter Weekend, I got stuck on a “Blood” film kick. Don’t judge me. I like topical themes. Any road, that’s when I ran into Blood Diner. I had no idea this movie existed until I saw the poster flipping through movies on Shudder. When...

Donald Farmer’s cult classic, Vampire Cop has delighted B-movie fans for over two and half decades since debuting in 1990. It also marked one of the earliest appearances of popular scream queen Melissa Moore. Yet to this day, it’s only been released on VHS…
Now Srs Cinema have announced not only Vampire Cop‘s Blu-ray debut but also, as an added bonus, the release will include the director’s original cut for the very first time anywhere – scenes that were cut by the original distributor prior to release. This original version includes scenes with Melissa Moore and Blood Feast star Mal Arnold that no one has ever scene, besides extending many moments in the movie.

The Bottom Shelf returns, with a video nasty, The Howling 2, and a tribute to the late Herschell Gordon Lewis...
To most, September 26th is the date when, in 1680, the Dutch city Gorinchem suffered a citizen’s revolt due to an imposed tax on cereal. From now on, though, that will change, as any right-thinking person will remember that date in 2016 as the day The Godfather Of Gore, the great Herschell Gordon Lewis, died.
The brain behind a range of vintage cult classics, spanning the gamut of exploitation cinema, from splatter movies to comedy erotica and supernatural witchcraft thriller (niche!), Lewis’ influential sixties and seventies productions paved the way for the video nasties of the eighties and the gory likes of David Cronenberg and Peter Jackson and stand up today as camp, gawdy historical documents of a bygone era. There are few absolutes in life, let alone in the world of horror; but this I find to be true: Herschell Gordon Lewis was appreciated in his time. Beloved, actually. Sadly passing away on September 26th, 2016 at the age of 87, he left behind a slew of grindhouse classics encapsulating everything from biker flicks to sex ed pieces. A goofy horror comedy that boasts some weirdly insane set pieces and a lot of lighthearted fun, Blood Diner is the vegetarian cannibalism movie I never knew I needed (but definitely do now). It’s a film I’ve heard about for a long time, but just never found the opportunity to rent, which is why I’m happy to see it resurrected in HD by Lionsgate as part of their new Vestron Video Collector’s Series. It may not be an experience for everyone, but considering my absolute love for balls-out, unabashedly weird horror comedies from the 1980s (like The Stuff or Saturday the 14th Strikes Back), Blood Diner is the perfect Blood Feast sequel we never officially got, and I had a blast with it.
Blood Diner’s story is anything but simple, so I’ll do my best here. The film opens with two kids, Michael and George Tutman,...
