The trick with horror is how you use the tropes. Slashers, ghost stories, monster movies, there’s a formula to them all but what separates the good from the bad is how they use that formula in an innovative way. James Button and Kristaps Kazaks’ short turned web series turned short again The Corpse Series is a great example of this. At its heart, it’s a comedy about two bumbling idiots trying to dig themselves out of a bad situation. It’s just that the bad situation is an ever increasing stack of dead bodies. The innovation and excitement of Button and Kazaks’ short is in its escalation and how the filmmakers string together the ever-increasing chaos of their characters’ situation. In a recent interview with Variety, Indian director Don Palathara was asked about the inspiration for his latest feature “Family”, which marks a return to the themes and settings of “The Corpse” and “Seed”. “The Church was always the elephant in the room”, he explains about his family and growing up in a rural community, and how “Family” deals with the idea of feeling watched constantly, as well as being judged. The feature, which has its world premiere at International Film Festival Rotterdam, seems like a natural progression for Palathara at the same time, with its aesthetic approach asking the viewer to pay attention to the smallest of details in the picture and the characters we see on the screen. It is a fascinating approach, very cinematic, highlighting the importance of the composition as it may give clues to a hidden truth.

The Day After Halloween (no relation to the Australian film Snapshot which was released in the US under that title) actually opens on Halloween as Addison (Danny Schluck; Street to Table) and Hayes (Brandon DeLany; Air: The Musical) prepare for their Halloween celebrations. First with a special selection of films at the drive-in Addison runs. Then at an after-party just like every year.
This year however there’s a complication. When they wake up they find a dead body (Aimee Fogelman; Don Jon) in their bathtub. Judging by the marks on the body foul play was involved, and worst of all she was Addison’s girlfriend up until the night before when they had a messy breakup. Since both of them were blackout drunk the night before they have no idea what could have happened,...

April 10th is going to be a momentous day to be a cult genre fan, as we have a bevy of home media releases that folks are surely going to want to add to their Blu-ray and DVD collections. Arrow Video’s two-disc limited edition set for Dario Argento’s Deep Red looks absolutely incredible, and Scream Factory is keeping busy with a few releases of their own, including Larry Cohen’s Full Moon High, Crucible of Horror, and Superbeast. And as if all that wasn’t enough, Kino Classics is resurrecting The Psychopath in HD as well (which I personally cannot wait to revisit myself).
We also have several new genre-related movies coming our way, too: Ted Geoghegan’s Mohawk, My Friend Dahmer, Are We Not Cats, and Us & Them. Other notable releases for Tuesday, April 10th include Braven, Grindsploitation Trilogy, Disembodied and Enigma Rosso/Red Rings of Fear.
