Merian C. Cooper and Ernest Schoedsack's classic monster movie "King Kong" was released in 1933, so the monster turns 91 years old in 2024. That means he's definitely too old for this sh*t.
In Adam Wingard's 2021 film "Godzilla vs. Kong," the 70-year-old nuclear gorilla-whale and the 91-year-old mega-ape, both drawn by an ineffable, in-born monstrous instinct, had to fight. Over the course of many decades, Godzilla movies have taught us that if two kaiju ever appear in the same film, they instantly hate one another and have to start wailing on each other. It won't be until a tertiary monster appears — usually an "evil" one — that the primary and secondary monsters put aside their differences and team up to hang a beatin' on the new guy. This is what happened in "Godzilla vs. Kong." At first, the title monsters were enemies. When Mechagodzilla appeared, however, Kong and Godzilla pounded the interloper into the dirt.

"If you meet a vampire, don't breathe." This is the sage advice that Master Kau, the Taoist priest played by Lam Ching-ying, gives to his bumbling apprentices, Man-choi (Ricky Hui) and Chau-sang (Chin Siu-ho), in the 1985 Hong Kong action comedy "Mr. Vampire."
Forget everything you know about bloodsuckers; the undead specimens in "Mr. Vampire" are breath-suckers. They have a very deliberate way of hopping with their arms stretched out in front of them, legs also stiff and straight from rigor mortis. In Chinese, these zombie-like revenants are known as the jiangshi; in Japanese, it's kyonshi, while in English, they're sometimes referred to as "Chinese hopping vampires."
Stirred up by the disinterment of a parent who was buried with bad feng shui, the jiangshi of "Mr. Vampire" are a comedic answer to the unsettled ghosts of subsequent Asian horror films like "Ringu" and "The Eye." They're the reanimated corpses of people...

Known as “Call Him Mr. Shatter” in the U.S., this was the second of a three-movie deal co-production between Shaw Brothers and the British Hammer Film Productions. “The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires” starring Peter Cushing, David Chiang and Shih Szu was the first. Since both movies were box office failures, their third collaboration never materialized.

At the start of the movie, an assassin named Shatter (Stuart Whitman) is hired to kill an African dictator. His weapon of choice is a gun hidden inside a camera in which he kills his targets by taking their pictures. Maybe they should call him “Shutter” instead. Anyway, after the successful photo shoot, he heads to Hong Kong to meet Hans Leber (Anton Diffring) to collect his payment. But instead of getting his money, he soon discovers that he has become a target as the local hit-men...

I've worked remotely for more than 15 years, so the transition to pandemic life wasn't as jarring as it was for some, but even I wasn't mentally prepared for will likely be 2+ years of us being in lockdown. It's been a real struggle to watch anything that's super serious (I'm still waiting to see Relic!), and I've turned to some of my favorites as horror movie comfort food, including... The Monster Club!
Those who have listened to our Corpse Club podcast over the years know that this has been a favorite of mine for quite some time now. It's easily the movie I've watched the most in the last ten years and no other movie comes close, but it isn't nostalgia driving my interest in re-watching this. I didn't see the movie until maybe 10-15 years ago, but thanks to the Code Red Blu-ray release, it's been a regular watch ever since.

With the resurgence of Kung Fu and Hammer horror in the 70’s, The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires was inevitable – Fang Fu, if you will. Roy Ward Baker’s shocker is packed with enough R-rated sex and violence to tide over any drive-in crowd and it brings back Peter Cushing as the indefatigable Van Helsing – though our favorite vampire-hunter is stuck with a pretty blasé bloodsucker as an adversary. Fortunately the high-flying fight scenes stave off most of the doldrums.

The first question you are probably asking is “Do we need another book about Hammer films?” Speaking as someone whose Hammer shelf is already groaning with the weight of so many volumes on the company, the answer, as far as Hammer Complete is concerned, is “Absolutely.” This book, coming in at nearly 1000 pages, is a lifetime achievement for journalist Howard Maxford, and one that deserves immense praise. Unlike other books which might focus specifically on the horror films, or the posters, or the ups and downs of the company itself, here Maxford has attempted to provide a complete encyclopedia of everything and everyone connected to Hammer. From Temple Abady (who appeared in Never Look Back in 1952) and The Abominable Snowman (1957) to Murial Zillah and Marc Zuber, no Hammer stone has been left unturned or contributor ignored.

A town's witchcraft past comes back to haunt it in violent fashion in Superstition (aka The Witch), and to follow up on their Blu-ray announcement of The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires, Scream Factory has now revealed that they'll also bring Superstition to Blu-ray this April.
From Scream Factory: "We’re feeling lucky this spring as we unleash the 80s supernatural gory horror film Superstition (also known as The Witch in some circles) on Blu-ray for the first time! Street date is planned for April 16th.
Something horrible is happening at the old house on Mill Road. A series of ghastly accidents has occurred near the site where a witch drowned centuries earlier. But when an alcoholic minister and his family move into the cursed residence, an idealistic young priest (James Houghton) and a cynical police detective (Albert Salmi) start their own investigation into the unexplained violence. By the early ‘70s, Hammer films was wheezing and sputtering just to stay alive. Their attempts to stay current with the changing tides of horror were often misbegotten and misdirected (Dracula A.D. 1972, anyone?) as the plots continued to recycle shopworn ideas when audiences were ready for more modern concerns, such as hulking maniacs with chainsaws. In essence, time was passing Hammer by, and they were willing to try anything. Hence we arrive at The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires (1974), a delightful elixir of Dracula and…Kung Fu. This was the last gasp for Hammer’s beloved franchise, and it’s a very worthy burial.
Aka 7 Brothers Versus Dracula, 7 Brothers and a Sister Meet Dracula, 7 Golden Vampires, and Enter The Dracula (no, but who screwed up that marketing?), Legend was a co-production between Hammer and Shaw Brothers, the immortal Chinese martial arts film studio that would crank out 10, sometimes 15 films a year of kinetic,...

Between the early 1950s and mid 1980s the Children's Film Foundation was a non-profit making establishment behind dozens of films aimed at a young audience, most of them screening as programme constituents at Saturday morning 'Picture Shows'. I didn't catch many of these during my own childhood. But I do recall a couple of particularly enjoyable ones that I did get to see in the early 1970s: Cry Wolf (1969) and All at Sea (1970), both of which are conspicuously absent from the half dozen or so collections issued on DVD to date. Many of the Cff’s films had a run-time of around an hour, although there were also a number of serials in their catalogue. Masters of Venus was one such production. Comprising eight 15-minute instalments, it arrives on DVD in the UK in a restored release from BFI.

The icon-establishing performances Marilyn Monroe gave in Howard Hawks’ Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) and in Billy Wilder’s Some Like It Hot (1959) are ones for the ages, touchstone works that endure because of the undeniable comic energy and desperation that sparked them from within even as the ravenous public became ever more enraptured by the surface of Monroe’s seductive image of beauty and glamour. Several generations now probably know her only from these films, or perhaps 1955’s The Seven-Year Itch, a more famous probably for the skirt-swirling pose it generated than anything in the movie itself, one of director Wilder’s sourest pictures, or her final completed film, The Misfits (1961), directed by John Huston, written by Arthur Miller and costarring Clark Gable and Montgomery Clift.

Why Watch? A few years ago I had the extreme pleasure of seeing a vintage Shaw Brothers movie that I wasn’t allowed to talk about because a theater — let’s call it the Schmalamo Schmafthouse — was working out a deal to secure a lot more reels. There was so much magic in it. Not only the gorgeous fight choreography, but also the sheen of creative aggression and semi-fantastical adventure. It was a big movie that didn’t feel expensive. A contradiction that must have taken an immense amount of skill. With a half century of cinema under their black belts, the Shaw Brothers were luminaries in the popularization of kung fu movies, and now The Seventh Art (via IndieWire) has stumbled upon this excellent BBC documentary from 1975 which chronicles star David Chiang’s rise to prominence and the studio’s unusual techniques. Taste for Adventure; Fists of Fire is an incredible little gem that feeds the...

It has been dismissed over the years as cheesy, cheap and laughable but, as has been the case on many occasions, Hammer Films have had the last laugh. They boast a back-catalogue that is to horror movies what The Rolling Stones’ discography is to rock music. Fifty-nine years after the release of their first horror movie proper (The Quatermass Xperiment), Hammer’s films have survived scrutiny and re-evaluation and have now attained National Treasure status. Moreover, in terms of sheer importance, the Hammer films were some of the most influential of the past half-century. The ripple-effect of their imitators cashing in on their success would beget the careers of some of the biggest names in Hollywood today.
And yet since 1984 Hammer has been a dormant entity, existing only in the memory: a pile of ashes, a cape and a signet ring waiting to be reanimated by the crimson, jugular discharge of some poor,...

Hong Kong film tycoon whose studios and TV company enjoyed huge international success
Sir Run Run Shaw, who has died aged 106, was the most famous of the Shaw brothers who became synonymous with Chinese films in south-east Asia. He started with one cinema in pre-second world war Singapore: by the time Japan invaded, he had more than 130 houses. After the war he moved operations to Hong Kong, spotting a market dominated by foreign films and sub-standard local productions. When he saw a picture from his studio that was no good, he would throw it away and start again.
The Shaw brothers came from a family of businessmen in Ningbo on China's eastern coast, where people have been accustomed to migrate for generations, and where Run Run was born. In the mid-1920s, four of the six brothers became involved in films after the eldest, Runje, acquired a theatre as a bad debt.

We look back at the key films from the long career of the Hong Kong studio mogul credited with triggering the worldwide craze for kung fu
• Run Run Shaw, godfather of kung fu film-making, dies aged 106
Along with his brother Runme, Run Run Shaw set up shop in the south-east Asian film business, first experiencing success before the second world war by founding a chain of cinemas in Malaya. In 1957 the brothers moved their activities to Hong Kong, and they put themselves firmly on the map when their elaborate costume drama, The Magnificent Concubine, won a technical prize at the 1962 Cannes film festival, the first Chinese film to do so. It stars Li Li-hua as a senior emperor's concubine, whose position is threatened when a younger concubine appears on the scene. There's Li warbling a ditty in the clip above.

In 1974, The Shaw Brothers even collaborated with Hammer Studios in one of the most unusual genre films of the 70s,...

While variations on the Dracula legend are among the most oft-told tales in movies and television, some stand out from the pack.
Dracula, the name is legendary. The First Vampire of both literature and film, he also rose to dominate pages of history. Dracula has been vilified for years. Vlad Tepes is painted as a cruel tyrant who impaled people who defied him, nailed hats onto the heads of monks who didn’t deify him, and who dipped his bread in the blood of armies defeated by him.
Cruel? Maybe. But not when you remember that after Spartacus’ slave rebellion was put down, Rome lined miles of roads with crucified dissidents. There was no internet back then and when you wanted to send a message you had to make it big. The Turks knew enough not to fuck with Vlad the Impaler or they’d get a...

American cult film fans have been watching with envy as one Hammer Horror classic after another landed on UK store shelves beginning in late 2011. Well, the long wait for us may finally be coming to an end as Variety reported this morning that Millennium Entertainment has picked up the license from Exclusive Media this April. Not all appears to be wine and roses just yet, though. The initial release is to be a two-disc three-film DVD set with Dracula: Prince of Darkness (already on Blu in the UK), The Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires (legendary crossover madness from Hammer and Shaw Brothers Studios) and Frankenstein Created Woman (coming to UK Blu in May). Joining the Fantasy Film Weekend for a second year, I knew what to expect, plenty of films and a Monday where your body feels like it wants to sleep for a whole week. The film festival is quite a rare gem in the festival calendar as it focuses not only on the new, but the classic and at times the downright strange films. This year there were Attractions such as a 70mm print of Big Trouble in Little China, Coraline 3D, The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm in Cinerama and most other films on 35mm where possible so this of course is one for the lovers of film of all types.
The first day was quite a leisurely stroll into the strange and horrific, just to ease into proceedings, but with Pieces being on the bill for the day it was sure to push up the gore value to a good level.

Hammer Films has a number of projects in various stages of development and the success of The Woman in Black means that they’ll continue to release new horror films. We knew that Hammer was looking to revive a number of their old properties, but during a recent interview we conducted with Marcus Hearn, he revealed that they are planning a present-day Dracula movie:
“The company’s chairman, Simon Oakes, is talking about making a new Dracula, and setting it in present-day London. It’s fun to speculate who could step into Christopher Lee’s shoes. Just last year I would probably have dismissed the idea of another Hammer Dracula as quite far-fetched, but I think the success of The Woman in Black has opened up all sorts of possibilities.”

Renowned vampire hunter Professor Van Helsing is giving a lecture in China when some villagers persuade him to travel to their remote village and help them fight off seven vampires which have cursed their village. Unknown to Van Helsing, the head vampire is in fact his arch nemesis, Count Dracula, who has assumed the body of one of the Chinese vampires.
I’m not usually a big fan of martial arts films on their own but when combined with other genres (i.e. Big Trouble in Little China), it makes for interesting viewing to say the least. The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires is no exception. The last of the Hammer Dracula films, this was always going to be up against it after Christopher Lee swore he would never don the cape again….and I don’t blame him after Dracula A.D. 1972 and The Satanic Rites of Dracula.

In London in the 1970s, Scotland Yard think they have uncovered a case of vampirism and head off to seek the expert advice of Professor Larimer Van Helsing. Investigating further, Van Helsing discovers that some extremely rich and powerful figures are ploughing money into a huge foundation with a boss who has never been seen.
It turns out that this boss is in fact the resurrected Count Dracula who is finally sick of the endless pain and suffering of eternal life and is plotting to unleash a new enhanced strain of the Black Death thus taking everyone in the world down with him when he dies.
Talk about flogging a dead horse. There’s no wonder Christopher Lee got sick of donning the fangs whenever Hammer came calling! This penultimate Dracula film is slightly better than the abysmal Dracula A.D. 1972, but still suffers from placing the film in a contemporary setting,...

After being caught in bed with the burgomaster’s daughter, Paul Carlson jumps into a nearby coach and makes a hasty escape. He winds up at Castle Dracula where he becomes Dracula’s latest victim. There’s a lot of evil out there! Disposing of the nasty creatures, monsters, zombies, witches, vampires and the like is a dirty job, but somebody’s gotta do it. Remakes of Fright Night and Conan The Barbarian will splatter evil blood all over screens this week when they open in theaters on Friday, August 19th, so here’s a look at our favorite monster killers from the movies.
Now, before we get started… a list like this really needs to be defined, so here are those pesky rules that govern who makes the cut and who gets cut:
You must have multiple kills! One and done is not enough. You must be a full-time monster hunter. None of this part-time, moonlighting crap! You must actually “kill” the monsters. Sorry, but The Ghostbusters don’t make the cut.
Honorable Mention: Hans, trolljegeren – Trollhunter (2010)

The Good Bad Movie Club, London
Going from bad to worse can only be a good thing in the world of crap movie appreciation, and the establishment that brought you Tommy Wiseau's The Room and Troll 2 has scraped even deeper to bring you a season of bottom-of-the-late-80s-barrel gems. First off is the imaginatively demented Killer Klowns From Outer Space, in which alien clowns set balloon dogs, custard pies and mutant popcorn on Earthlings – expect fancy dress and free candy floss. Other godawful classics include the cheap and disgusting Garbage Pail Kids Movie, the Et-with-product-placement tale Mac And Me, and Dolph Lundgren's pec-flexingly camp fantasy Masters Of The Universe.
Prince Charles, WC2, Sat to 10 Sep
Fantastic Films Weekend, Bradford
It's mostly retro fare for this cult festival, which is especially good news for fans of Hammer/Amicus horror – a legion to whom the name Peter Sasdy will be legend.

As horror fans know better than anyone, the best way to beef up a film's mood and atmosphere is through the use of music, and few did that better than the composers who worked for Hammer Films in its heyday. Which is why we're thrilled to pass on the news that three new compilations of Hammer film soundtrack music will be made available through Silva Screen on March 28th.
Released as part of The Hammer Legacy series, "The Vampire Collection", "The Frankenstein Collection", and "The Science Fiction Collection" will feature some of the best music from the likes of Hammer composers Tristram Cary, Harry Robinson and James Bernard.

The horror genre - furthermore, the Hammer Films legacy - has lost a director. British filmmaker Roy Ward Baker has died at the age of 93. Although best known for his Titanic film A Night to Remember and his work on The Avengers television series, Baker was a heavy contributor to the fear genre when he cozied up with Hammer for Quatermass and the Pit , The Vampire Lovers , Scars of Dracula , Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde and The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires . He also directed the horror anthologies Asylum and The Vault of Horror . For a full reflection on the man's career, head to the NY Times' obituary .

Speaking with FEARnet, Hammer head Simon Oakes discussed their upcoming films, including Matt Reeves’ Let Me in (a remake of the indie hit Let the Right One In), The Resident, and other films coming up in the company’s slate, as well as what classic Hammer properties/characters may be ripe for re-imagining, and the future outlook of the company in different media.
