Big assembled cast, Chartbuster Music and Blockbuster Filmmaking on Current affairs of the Nation.

Roti, Kapada Aur Makaan (1974) : Brief Review -

Big assembled cast, Chartbuster Music and Blockbuster Filmmaking on Current affairs of the Nation. When i look at top 5 biggest hits of the 70s decade, all the films are masala films (except for Bobby, a Romantic Drama) and while looking at top 10 biggest hits i see somewhat similar picture which means it was the decade masala films. Bollywood wasn't ready for experimental and artistic films so we didn't get much of offbeat films. But Indian Filmmakers were really thinking about it and therefore they brought all the social messages and poignant stories through mainstream masala/action flicks which can be understood by mass Audience. Manoj Kumar directorial Roti, Kapada Aur Makaan is one of those picture in which audience got to see everything they loved in that time such as Romance, Emotions, Family Drama, Action, Clapworthy dialogues, Super Hit Music and unexpectedly social message or should l say talk on current situation of the nation. One can imagine how amazing it would have been to see such a tremendous star cast on screen filled with heavyweights like Manoj Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor and Zeenat Aman. And then there were overwhelming performances by Moushumi Chatterjee and Prem Nath. Those were the days when even supporting roles used to leave equal impact and now days supporting roles are not even written with that mindset. Laxmikant Pyarelal's Music is not just Superb but Timeless also. There are many super hit albums composed by this maestro pair and Roti, Kapada Aur Makaan is surely one of those. I must give a lot of credit to lyricist Santosh Anand for his brilliant and hard hitting words. Thoughtful lyrics and Melodious Compositions makes a terrific combo that is remembered even in Today's time. "Haye Haye ye Majboori", "Baki Kuch Bacha To Mehngai" and "Mein Na Bhulunga" are just fabulous songs. The dialogues are fantastic and also have a perfect balance of mass and class. I always wondered why Manoj Kumar's name is not taken like Manmohan Desai when people talk about Mainstream Masala Entertainers of 70s. He has given bigger hits than Manmohan Desai's biggest hits in consecutive decades 70s (RKAM) and 80s (Kranti) and he also dealt with social issues through his films. Even in this film he shines brightly as a director and actually more than an actor. There were no dull moments even if the plot seems predictable just like any other 70s masala film. The screenplay is engaging despite long runtime of about 150 minutes and i don't think it will reduce even in the repeat watch. Overall, Roti, Kapada Aur Makaan is Perfect Blockbuster Entertainer having everything in correct ratio whether it is acting, story, music, dialogues or direction.

35 years later I still remember this movie
arulalan_cme5 April 2010
Of course, In Tamil nadu in 1974 very few schools taught Hindi. Fortunately I studied in the ISC stream, and so could understand the movie to a large extent. This movie, though released in 1974, we could see it only in 1975 summer,as we were in rural tamil nadu.

1974 was very troublesome for youngsters of the country. There was no clear direction for us. TV was unknown then.at least in Tamil Nadu.We had very few role models. Traditional heroes of tamil films for not talking of honesty and trustworthiness. There was this Railways strike In the news we were constantly bombarded with cases streaking " running without dress"; including Indian cities. This movie helped us to have role models. There were several of them. Of course sardarji was one. The jawan who dies suppressing his cough. zeenath having the gun wound yet expressing love. Moushmi chatterji fighting injustice in the end. people views on the same scene differ. Amitabh driving with a single hand was sorry...is thrilling even to think of it. Amitabh as a college student getting slap for trying to join with wrong forces in the beginning of the movie, all very vivid in the memory, for I had to see the movie in theaters. I enjoyed every bit. I saw two times. I don't mind if the movie was too cinematic. We need such stories to stimulate our younger generation. Now I am a community based paediatrician with 25 years experience. I will certainly recommend to my children

Lyrics and music are outstanding
beevenkat23 April 2021
U are a jobless youth with many mouths to feed. U brazenly flaunt your education degree but what's the point? U won't compromise on your ideologies; hence u fail to get a job. Your partner abandons you for an affluent guy. Your sister remains unmarried. Your father expires due to deficiency of medical attention. In short, your life is the pits. But since u are #ManojKumar, u will triumph against all odds and protect your country. Any kid born in the 60s and 70s will unquestionably grasp the essence of #RotiKapadaAurMakaan (1974). Lyrics and music are outstanding. Running time needs to be reduced by 20 minutes. Rating 3/5.

Fun to watch
Brucev-322 November 2000
This is an indian movie. Indian movies are a 3 hr mix of action, drama, humor, and musical. This may seem long. But if a movie is as good as Roti Kapada Aur Makaan, you will not notice it. This movie has some of the greatest actors of the indian cinema. A lot of social and political issues are being portrayed, which even after 26 years haven't changed that much. But if you do not like the moral tone in the movie there is enough action to keep a lot of you satisfied. One special relationship (in the movie) has to be mentioned. The oldest brother of one very poor family (the main character, Manoj Kumar) is the one with a degree, but is not able to get a good job. On the other side is his younger brother (my favorite, Amitabh Bachchan) who earns his money a little bit illegally and as a consequence gets judged and punished by his brother. So Amitabh decides to go join the army to make amends.

This is really fun to watch. Although Amitabh hasn't got a very big part, he really steals the show. Oh yeah there is a lot of romance going on, but it never gets boring. Watch it!

Probably Premnath's greatest ever role!
anoopshahi10 December 2001
This film has the lot: romance, action and hit songs. Manoj Kumar undoubtedly holds the lead role, but as far as show-stealing goes, Premnath's 'Sardar Harnam Singh' has to down as one of the greatest character portrayals, ever.

Not only did he recite some of Sikhism's holiest 'prayers' fluently but was also allowed to swear (rather frequently) in Punjabi. Which, both added that extra class to his performance.

His role was so widely acclaimed amongst Punjabis, that whenever Premnath was to visit Punjab, any services or goods he may require were given free of charge!

the best

Along with Kranti definitely one of Manoj Kumars best movies. And also on e of the best movies ever made in India. Also this is the first movie that co starred the later hit jodi of Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi kapoor (not counting the movie Bombay Talkies in which Shashi was the leading man and Amitabh an extra whos scene had been cut from the movie). A great cast compromsing of Manoj Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi kapoor, Zeenat Aman, Moushumi Chatterjee, Dheeraj Kumar, Madan Puri, Kamini Kaushal, Raza Murad, Aruna Irani, Manmohan and many many others. The story has a few subplots which are done very well. Though Amitabh Bachchan has a supporting role of maybe 50 to 60 minutes max, he is the scenestealer! As usual! The role portryed by premNath was written for and offered to Pran who turned it down because he had just played a similar role in Amitabh's Zanjeer. Manoj Kumar could not handle this and never offered Pran another role again. The songs are all good but the best of the lot is actually Main Na Bhoolunga (part 2).

Mediocre film for a mediocre population - perfect formula for a superhit!
I was expecting more from a movie that was such a blockbuster and winner of several filmfare awards. Notwithstanding the amazing suspension of disbelief requirement, contrived song sequences and coincidences that were considered staple of Indian films of that time, the plot themes are so mixed up on purpose to get full 'masala' that you have a potpourri of a love triangle, family drama of a joint family, patriotism, secularism, and a social and political commentary - all of which are half baked and poorly done. This film was made in 1974 when youth unemployment and poverty were big issues. Indira Gandhi had won the previous general elections in 1971 on a 'Garibi Hatao' or 'Banish Poverty' manifesto, and then failed to deliver on these fronts because of her continued socialist/crypto-communist agenda. Yet, and most disappointingly and dishonestly, the film blames all evils on dhoti clad lalas and banias, while absolving the political leadership by explicitly relaying Indira Gandhi's 15th Aug broadcast, showing Vote Congress graffiti and singing paeans to socialism. Actually I have lost a lot of respect for the cinema going public of India of those times and for Manoj Kumar as well after watching this silly film. Even my favorite singer Mukesh sounded off-key in all songs.

One of the best films by MK
silvan-desouza30 July 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Manoj Kumar an actor who is mostly known for his patriotic films be it UPKAR(1967) or the later released KRANTI(1981)

Here he showcases the problems of basic Indians gauged by the title Roti Kapda aur makaan. The film showcases almost everything in the almost 3 hrs run time

The film has a nice story and it's brilliantly handled by Manoj Kumar who has also written the script, screenplay and edited the film.

There are several brilliant scenes like the spat between Amitabh and Manoj initially, Manoj Kumar-Zeenat Aman track, Manoj-Mousumi track and then the twist in the tale(interval)

The second half focuses more on the consequences of Manoj's decision The twists in the tale are well handled, the film does tend to drag with too many songs but the storytelling is perfect

Though on the flipside, there is an overdose of Manoj Kumar which is anyway predicted afterall he is in every other department but even actingwise he is in every frame, every song.etc other characters do get a bit lesser development

The film does tend to get surreal at times like in the climax Amitabh performing stunts with a bike with just one hand( as his one hand gets chopped off)

Direction by Manoj Kumar is brilliant, several scenes are well handled This ranks amongst his best works Music by LP is fantastic, all songs are best but my fav is Main Na Bhulunga 2 by Mukesh and Lata, Aur Nahin is perfectly placed and rendered by Mahendra and so is Mehngai Maar Gayi All songs are brilliantly picturised

Amongst actors Manoj Kumar hams his way through the role, He used to have one style approach that of a self pity shrug and he carries it throughout Amitabh perhaps signed this film before Zanjeer as this is rare to see him play second fiddle, but he does a great job as usual Zeenat Aman does a good job in her role Mousumi excels in her part, Shashi Kapoor does a good job too This is the first film starring Amitabh and Shashi amongst rest,Prem Nath is likable while Madan Puri is excellent and so is Aruna Irani and the rest

Butter Roti.. Branded Kapada.. aur Luxury Makaan!!
nadkarnisumeet27 October 2022
Roti Kapada aur Makaan review:

Taking a cue from Indira Gandhi's election campaign of 1967, Manoj Kumar chose the three basic necessities which were plaguing the Indians of that time - Roti, Kapada and Makaan. Playing the main lead called Bharat, Manoj Kumar had a stellar cast backing him from Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor to Zeenat Aman and Moushumi Chatterjee.

Bharat is the educated yet unemployed youth who loses his father as well as lady love to the corruption rot in the system. Burning his degree on his pappa's pyre, he decides to work with the corrupt forces. "If you can't beat them, join them". But can the real hardcore desh bhakt ever go against his country??!!!

Though the film's focus was expectedly on Manoj Kumar, Zeenat Aman and Moushumi Chatterjee made their presence felt. Zeenat sizzled in her wet saree in the "Hai hai yeh majboori" number while Moushumi's gang rape scene filmed on a heap of wheatflour devastated the audience. Seems she was pregnant at that time and all the "atta" falling on her face made her extremely uncomfortable and puke many times. My fave Premnath had a small role of a valiant Sikh and the dude nailed it thoroughly!!

I wasn't born when Roti Kapada aur Makaan released and saw it only in its '80s re-run. Apparently, the original film posters had a small mug shot of Amitabh Bachchan playing Manoj Kumar's younger brother who joins the army and loses his hand in the 1971 war. But when I went for the re-run, Bachchan was the reigning superstar and dominated the posters while the real hero Manoj Kumar was hardly visible. Time time ki baat hai pyaare!!

There is something about Roti Kapada aur Makaan which will instantly connect with the '70s and '80s gen guys. It perfectly captures the social and political ethos of that era. Obviously, the millennials won't identify with it all. They have moved up the ladder to Butter Roti, Branded Kapada and Luxury Makaan!!

Regards, Sumeet Nadkarni.

Khan Review - One of the best from Manoj kumar
zkzuber19 October 2022
In 70's this movie had a song on picturised on premnath who had a major role "baki jo bachha tha mehngai mar gayi.... " and there was not political issue on it. In fact this song fits for today's time in 2022. Imagine the politics if such songs if made today. Well this movie is one of the best from Manoj kumar factory better than purab pashchim and upkaar. RKAM is entertainment typical entertaining bollywood movie with a bit of political, social message. Songs are terrific " Main na bhoolonga... " Is still a chart buster, very well picturised. Zeenat, moushmi as leading ladies had good role with slight negative shade in zeenat's character, they did good job. Manoj kumar, sashi kapoor are good, surprisingly premnath in character of sardar was liked a lot by audience. Amitabh in small role as this was beginning of his career does a good job. Aruna Irani 's song "panditji mere marne... " Is too good but not many know about nor it's played today but it can be said it's a very good song with good lyrics, music, choreography and Aruna did fantastic job. Watch it if you are looking for entertainment.

A good movie with little flaw
islamzd22 February 2002
If compared with other Indian commercial films, Roti Kapada Aur Makaan does not have much flow.

I'm not sure about the status and the financial conditions of the Indian singers at the present time. But this film indicates that, during the 70's, even the best singers would get nowhere with their talents.

In this film, Manuj Kumar is a singer with a legendry voice (Mukesh), yet he has neither fame nor money.

If talented singers did make a good living out their arts in India during the 70's, then this is perhaps the film's big flaw.

But overall, Roti Kapda Aur Makaan is probably one of Bollywood's few films that actually makes sense.

The direction, acting and story line are superb. The songs are related to the story, and are always inspiring to listen to.

Most Bollywood's films are hardly watch able, but it will be a pleasure to watch this one more than twice.
