Belgian director Joachim Lafosse is done being silent.
Just like the family in his latest film “A Silence,” inspired by the real-life case of Victor Hissel: a former lawyer for two victims of killer Marc Dutroux, ultimately charged with possession of child pornography.
“To me, it’s not a dark story, because they do start to talk,” he says about the characters played by Emmanuelle Devos and newcomer Matthieu Galoux, slowly digging up the long-buried sins of their husband and father (Daniel Auteuil).
“Astrid and her children decide to step out of that criminal environment. With this film, I want to show how people can be violated by something like that, how difficult it is to shake off that shame and guilt. It’s difficult, but I think it’s possible.”
He also had to learn how to speak up, he says.

Updated Saturday Pm: As of tonight, according to industry estimates, Sony Animation’s fourth weekend of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is ahead of Disney/Pixar’s second weekend of Elemental, $19.4 million to $18.3 million. This is after a $7.5M Saturday for Spidey, +32% over Friday, and a $7.1M Saturday for Elemental, +27% over Friday.
Still at a 38% ease, that’s not too shabby for Elemental. The previous Pixar misfire, Onward, didn’t get a full chance at a theatrical life as movie theaters closed down to due to Covid; the pic stalled at $61M stateside and jettisoned onto Disney+. Good Dinosaur, another Pixar dud, had a Thanksgiving launch back in 2015 with a $39.1M 3-day, -61% second weekend of $15.3M, and final domestic take of $123M. Who knows, maybe Elemental goes farther, especially as it looks to get a boost over the July 4th frame. Gross by Sunday looks to be $65.3M. Tonight’s...

The Gotham Awards took place on November 29 in Lower Manhattan, back in their usual prime slot at the start of the awards season. The event marks the first significant awards ceremony of the season, ahead of most critics groups and guilds.
Films with budgets exceeding $35 million are automatically disqualified from Gotham Awards consideration. For this reason, major Oscar contenders from Netflix, such as Jane Campion’s Venice winner “Power of the Dog,” Lin-Manuel Miranda’s feature directorial debut “Tick Tick Boom,” Jeymes Samuels’ “The Harder They Fall,” and Adam McKay’s “Don’t Look Up” did not make the cut.

As the cinematographer for Netflix’s Queer Eye, Garrett Rose knows he needs to use a light touch in his work. In an effort to highlight the story and the people being helped, keeping the visuals as close to reality is essential so it does not diminish the “emotional strength” of the episode.
Queer Eye stars Antoni Porowski, Tan France, Karamo Brown, Bobby Berk, and Jonathan Van Ness as the new Fab Five. In their 5th season, these style experts went to Philadelphia to give lifestyle and fashion makeovers to guests nominated by their friends and family.
Rose earned a nomination in the Outstanding Cinematography for a Reality Program category for his work on the episode titled “Groomer Has It,” where the Fab Five help Rahannah, a woman whose dog grooming business stalled out and needed a rebrand. The series is nominated for five other Emmys, including Outstanding Structured Reality Program.

No one utters the word “bipolar” until practically the end of Belgian director Joachim Lafosse’s “The Restless,” but you can sense that’s what the character Damien is dealing with from the opening scene, when a father-son day on the sea takes a startling turn. After steering a rented boat a certain distance offshore, the ever-impulsive Damien spontaneously dives overboard, leaving his boy, Amine (Gabriel Merz Chammah), alone at the helm. “I’m swimming back — you take the boat,” he says, leaving the boy with no other choice.
“The Restless” presents this startling rift in parental responsibility from the son’s point of view, suggesting that the episode — the kind of judgment lapse that might qualify as “fun-loving” in an American man-child comedy but feels genuinely alarming here — almost certainly has its origins in Lafosse’s own upbringing. Like that real-world Laurel and Hardy episode when Mom called the paramedics,...

And so we’ve come to the end (of the beginning). Emmy Award nomination voting is about to close — or, if you’re reading this anytime after Monday, it’s already closed — bringing an end to Phase 1 of the 2020-2021 Emmy season and starting the clock on that nerve-racking two weeks until the honest-to-God Emmy nominations are announced Tuesday, July 13. As of tonight, it’s all be over but the vote-counting.
Yet, there are a scant few hours left before ballots are due, and if the pandemic has taught us nothing else, it’s that people will procrastinate on just about anything, no matter how wide open their schedule. With that in mind, we’re taking one last opportunity to whisper our burning Emmy desires into the ears of those holdout tastemakers.
Libby Hill, TV Awards Editor: Ben, I gotta tell you. I love the final day of Emmy voting.

What does dismantling the American carceral state look like? How can meaningful and radical police reform actually be enacted? After years of tireless work by activists, acting upon decades of injustice against the poor and People of Color, these issues of now part of mainstream political platforms. On a federal level, President Joe Biden’s recent executive order to phase out the use of private, for-profit prisons is a clear indication of how far things have come….and how much further they need to go.

Sometimes the best way to make an institution reform is to change it from the inside. That was what longtime Philadelphia civil rights advocate and criminal defense attorney Larry Krasner thought when he launched his bid to become his city’s next district attorney. He won that 2017 election, and “Philly D.A.,” an eight-part documentary series for PBS’ “Independent Lens” banner, shows what happened next. Suddenly, this longtime advocate against mass incarceration was Philadelphia’s top prosecutor.
Krasner entered his role as D.A. with a mission: to end cash bail, something which results in defendants being jailed simply because they’re poor, and find other ways to reform an approach to criminal justice that has resulted in Philadelphia being the most incarcerated major city in the U.S. A few things seem like no-brainers: increase the amount of drugs an arrestee is carrying before major prison time is imposed,...

Dena Dietrich, a character actress who appeared in numerous TV shows and on Broadway but was instantly recognizable as the face of Mother Nature from a popular, long-running commercial campaign for Chiffon margarine, died Saturday, Nov. 21 of natural causes in a Los Angeles health care facility. She was 91.
Her death was confirmed by SAG-AFTRA in a statement honoring Dietrich’s service as a former SAG National Board member for nearly a decade.
With an impeccable delivery and a lightning shift in mood from matronly sweet to thunderous anger, Dietrich first uttered what would become a classic commercial catchphrase – “It’s not nice to fool Mother Nature!” – in 1971. The commercials, created by the D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles advertising agency, had Dietrich dressed in a diaphanous white gown and a daisy-chain laurel, test-tasting what she was sure to be her very own natural butter. Told by a narrator that she was actually eating Chiffon margarine,...

Our sister site Deadline exclusively reported that Kim Delaney will be joining the cast of “General Hospital.” Though the actress is best known for her role as Detective Diane Russell on “NYPD Blue,” this will actually be a homecoming of sorts. Habits die hard. It’s Sunday, which is usually the time to list and analyze the weekend’s grosses. However, since almost all theaters are closed, I decided to take a look back to this weekend in 1982 — the year when box-office statistics became part of entertainment reporting.
Almost 40 years ago, coverage wasn’t instantaneous. People had to wait until midweek for reports, which inched closer to real time as the years went on. Here, we have the benefit of hindsight — and the title’s performance might offer us some perspective on how these films informed what Hollywood, and box office, would become.

There’s nothing like a good mystery, and HBO’s Blackout (1985) has a central premise that’s hard to deny: You survive a car crash, but have no memory of who you were before. Until, 7 years later, someone shows up and insinuates that you were a man who murdered his entire family and then fled. Now, could you go about your life, or would you want to know the truth? And if you were a killer, would that impulse return?
HBO’s original programming was still in its infancy, so the film, which debuted on Sunday, July 28th, plays as a barely more graphic version of a network offering, which is fine anyway; Blackout offers enough story and characterization to diminish any desire for extra blood or sleaze.
Once more, to our faux TV Guide:

Star of 1974 film about bored housewife who embarks on voyage of sexual discovery dies after cancer battle and stroke
Sylvia Kristel, the Dutch-born actor who brought sex to the multiplex, has died at the age of 60. She had been battling cancer and suffered a debilitating stroke in June of this year. "She died during the night during her sleep," her agent, Marieke Verharen, told the Afp news agency.
Having initially worked as a model, Kristel rose to stardom in Emmanuelle, the 1974 tale of a bored, beautiful housewife who embarks on a journey of sexual discovery. Her film career was dominated by her role as Emmanuelle
There can be few film actors so closely associated with one role as was Sylvia Kristel, who has died of cancer aged 60. The title role of the sexually adventurous housewife in Emmanuelle (1974) became a reference for every part she played subsequently. This was not surprising, as the Dutch star did play a character called Emmanuelle, with few variations, many times over.
