Venice – One of William Shakespeare’s late problem plays, Cymbeline requires a director to juggle multiple tones, blending comedy with swooning romance, vicious court treachery and an improbably happy ending in which the bad guys either turn noble or get conveniently dispatched. Michael Almereyda tackles that tricky challenge by treating the work as a suspenseful action drama, laughs be damned, enlisting an impressive name cast to help make his case. But primarily, what this moody contemporary update does is expose the play as a second-rate Romeo and Juliet that just wasn’t made for these times. Picked up by Lionsgate’s

Penn Badgley, Dakota Johnson and Anton Yelchin get caught up in a triangle amidst an epic battle between corrupt police and bikers, as seen in the first trailer for “Cymbeline.” In the same vein as Baz Luhrmann’s “Romeo + Juliet,” the Michael Almereyda-directed film is a modern retelling of a William Shakespeare play and centers on the battle between a drug dealing biker gang and dirty cops. Ed Harris leads with the titular role of Briton Motorcycle Club leader King Cymbeline, who clashes with the corrupt Roman Police. Badgley plays an orphan who steals the heart of Cymbeline’s daughter, Imogen [...]

This time, it’s Michael Almereyda’s unique Shakespeare adaptation that’s full of crime, corruption, and no doubt a lot of bad people. Cymbeline looks to reinvents one of Shakespeare’s...

Here's the first trailer for a modern-day adaptation of William Shakespeare's Cymbeline. The movie was directed by Hamlet director Michael Almereyda, who teamed back up with Ethan Hawke to bring this story to the big screen.
The movie has a great cast that also includes Ed Harris, Milla Jovovich, Penn Badgley, Anton Yelchin, and Dakota Johnson.
The new adaptation takes "the tale of Roman and Celtic nobility battling it out and takes it to the streets. Explosions, machine guns and lots of people looking pretty grimy."
As of right now there is no release date for the film. It doesn't even have a U.S. distributor. Thanks to The Playlist.

Michael Almereyda’s (Hamlet) latest film adaptation of a work of William Shakespeare, Cymbeline, has a lot going for it on the surface. Not only does it feature all of the flowery language and intricate, twisting plot elements that one would associate with a work that was penned by the Bard, but it also features an extensive ensemble cast that’s full of familiar faces, and more action than you can shake a stick at. Almereyda has taken a pretty soap opera-heavy story about love and deceit, set in a world of ancient nobility, and plopped it right down in a modern drug war between a crew of corrupt cops and a gang of unruly bikers, he’s got big stars like Ethan Hawke, Penn Badgley, Dakota Johnson, Milla Jovovich, Anton Yelchin, John Leguizamo, Ed Harris, and a handful of others helping to bring it all to life, and he’s brought more car crashes, machine...

Like Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet, director Michael Almereyda (of The Eternal, Hamlet previously) is taking on a contemporary adaptation of Shakespeare's lesser known Cymbeline. After directing Ethan Hawke in a similar style adaptation of Hamlet, Almereyda reteams with the Training Day star to amp up the tale of Romans and Celtics going head to head, this time with the aid of automatic weapons, explosions and a gritty cast of characters played by Ed Harris, Milla Jovovich, Anton Yelchin, Dakota Johnson. Benaroya Pictures describes the film in the vein of "Sons of Anarchy" and this first trailer supports that. Though it was only shot recently, director Michael Almereyda has already assembled a promo for his take on William Shakespeare’s Cymbeline, which takes the lesser-known play and gives it an update that appears to blend the modern stylings of Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet and the grittier edges of Sons Of Anarchy for a violent crime drama. The first trailer has now emerged online. Ethan Hawke, Ed Harris, Milla Jovovich, Anton Yelchin, Dakota Johnson, Penn Badgley, John Leguizamo and Delroy Lindo star in a labyrinthine romance which on the page includes deception, disguises, cross-dressing and supernatural intervention. We don’t see much evidence of the spookier elements, but there are a lot of guns and cars on display, plus the cast giving it their best Bard. The setting this time is among dirty cops and drug-dealing bikers in a crime-ridden modern-day America.Johnson plays Imogen, who disobeys her father...

Um, Penn Badgley is hot, but he is not Christian Grey. But there's no need to send Dakota Johnson to the Red Room of Pain just yet. On Monday, Sept. 9, the 23-year-old Fifty Shades of Grey lead was passionately making out with Mr. Badgley (and wearing a very un-Anastasia Steele brown wig) on the set of another movie, Cymbeline, in NYC. In this modern take on William Shakespeare's play, Dakota plays the wife of Penn's character. But in Fifty Shades of Grey, Dakota's leading man—Mr. Christian Grey—will be played by the also very handsome Charlie Hunnam. And while Dakota's in town to film Cymbeline, she still made time for Fifty Shades of Grey hangout sesh with author E.L. James...

Just one day after the newly announced star of Fifty Shades of Grey was spotted stripping down to her underwear on the set of her upcoming flick Cymbeline, the 23-year-old blond beauty was snapped sporting a brown wig while filming in NYC. The upcoming flick, which also stars Ethan Hawke, Milla Jovovich, Penn Badgley and Ed Harris is a modern-day spin on William Shakespeare's famous play of the same name. Ed Harris and Ethan Hawke are set to star in a modern day adaptation of William Shakespeare's Cymbeline.
The movie comes from writer-director Michael Almereyda. The story "unfolds as a battle between dirty cops and a drug-dealing biker gang set in a corruption-riddled 21st century America."
The original play focused on the daughter of British king Cymbeline, Imogen, who was banished after he found out she secretly married one of his courtiers without his permission.
There's no word on who Hawke is playing but Harris will play King Cymbeline. I've kind of been enjoying these modern day Shakespeare adaptations, and as a fan of cop dramas, this sounds like it will be a cool interesting setting.
Filming is scheduled to start in New York in August.

Julian Barnes reviews two very different interpretations of Cymbeline in the same TV cycle
Several furlongs understandably separate the left hand of the BBC from the right one. Only rarely, though, do we witness such a cameo of intermanual incomprehension as occurred last week within their Shakespeare cycle: the right hand seizing a hammer and snappishly nailing the left hand to the arm of the chair.
The Bardathon is generally impressive, rarely less than worthy, and often – by making available the obscurer plays – simply very useful. Its handmaiden series Shakespeare in Perspective (BBC2), in which specialist non-specialists sound off about the week's play, is, though usefully conceived, rather iffy in practice. Some of the temporary sages hired have been decidedly unnerved by the task of "introducing Shakespeare", able to handle it only by diving off into larky self-reference ("Gosh, fancy little me talking about big Bill …").
But besides this inner queasiness,...

William Shakespeare's "Cymbeline" is probably not the first title that comes to mind when you think "children's theater camp." But a few seasons ago at the Idyllwild Arts Summer Program in Idyllwild, Calif., actor-turned-director Johanna McKay found herself leading seven kids, ages 8 to 12, through that play's complicated dramaturgy. McKay wrote a mini version in rhymed, child-friendly iambic pentameter ("King Cymbeline came roaring through the house: / 'Get out! How could you marry her, you louse?' "). She also added a sequence involving a slow-motion sword fight. This artistic excursion was as rewarding for McKay as it was for the kids, perhaps more so. "We did it at the open-air amphitheater," she recalls. "We had the audience sit on the stage. You could see the woods and the hills and flags fluttering in the breeze. It was everything I'd hope a summer experience would be if I were in...

In his directorial debut Ralph Fiennes has created a vivid, intelligent Coriolanus with powerful political relevance
Modern-dress Shakespeare has been with us for nearly a century, long enough to cease being a novelty or in need of justification. Barry Jackson's 1920s Cymbeline at Birmingham Rep with the cast in first world war uniform is the key example we were shown pictures of as sixth-formers in the late 40s. Traditional dress, however we define it, is currently pretty rare, though film-makers, no doubt because of the continuing popularity of Roman epics, reached for their togas when Charlton Heston appeared in fustian versions of Julius Caesar and Antony and Cleopatra. The only recent movie to deal with one of the Roman plays was Richard Linklater's 2008 Me and Orson Welles, about the controversy surrounding Welles's 1937 anti-fascist modern-dress production of Julius Caesar in New York.
But now we have Ralph Fiennes's bloody and bold directorial debut,...

There's certainly no shortage of Shakespeare-based TV movies, but big-screen successes are limited. Since Baz Luhrmann's controversial but critically acclaimed 1996 reinvention of Romeo + Juliet led by Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes, few Shakespeare adaptations have even remotely attracted as much attention.
Old hand Kenneth Branagh has certainly had a fair stab at adapting Shakespeare's plays, with six bard-related movie features under his belt. His two most recent attempts both received mixed reviews (2006's As You Like It starring Kevin Kline and Alfred Molina and 2000's Love's Labours Lost with Timothy Spall), particularly for attempting to modernise the stories by using unusual settings and genres.
In 2000 Michael Almereyda's Hamlet (Ethan Hawke, Bill Murray, Julia Stiles) received a similarly divided response with criticism mainly focusing on casting. However, Michael Radford's 2004 more faithful reworking of The Merchant Of Venice (Al Pacino, Jeremy Irons, Joseph Fiennes) received generally positive reviews.
