Neil Young played his “Love Earth Tour” kick-off show with Crazy Horse at San Diego’s Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre on Wednesday night (April 24th).
The 14-song setlist primarily consisted of Young’s most beloved hits, including “Down by the River,” “Cortez the Killer,” “Cinnamon Girl,” “Powderfinger,” and “Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black).” Notably, “Cortez the Killer” featured Young singing some of the song’s original lyrics from a manuscript that he only recently rediscovered.

A portion of the show also saw Young perform solo acoustic renditions of “Heart of Gold,” “Comes a Time,” and “Human Highway.” Check out the full setlist and videos from the opening night of the “Love Earth Tour” below.

In typical Neil Young fashion, virtually nothing was revealed about his 2024 U.S. tour before it kicked off Wednesday night at San Diego’s Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre, other than the fact he’d be backed by Crazy Horse, and that Micah Nelson would be taking over guitar duties from Nils Lofgren. Would he pull a Greendale and debut an entire rock opera nobody had ever heard? Would he focus the set around the three new studio albums he cut with Crazy Horse between 2019 and 2022? Might he...

On April 14, years after first hinting they were coming, Neil Young is finally releasing two Seventies concert bootlegs. The first one, High Flyin’, is a series of recordings from his 1977 under-the-radar Santa Monica, California summer club tour with the Ducks, a supergroup of sorts featuring bassist Bob Mosley from Moby Grape, guitarist Jeff Blackburn, and drummer Johnny Craviotto. Check out a preview of “Little Wing” right here.

When news of Dean Stockwell’s death hit last week, much of the coverage centered around his career as a child star in the Forties when he acted alongside Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly, his role as the holographic advisor Al on the cult time-travel show Quantum Leap, and his work in movies like Married to the Mob and Blue Velvet.
But he was also a part of the late Sixties–early Seventies Topanga Canyon art scene where he palled around with Russ Tamblyn, Dennis Hopper, George Herms, Wallace Berman,...

Refresh for updates… Dean Stockwell, the Quantum Leap, Blue Velvet and Married to the Mob star who died Sunday at 85, is being remembered today, with filmmaker David Lynch honoring the actor in his usual idiosyncratic way, and lifelong friend Russ Tamblyn offering a poignant goodbye.
Stockwell’s Quantum Leap co-star, Scott Bakula, honored the actor in a statement to Deadline, writing, “I loved him dearly and was honored to know him. He made me a better human being…” Read the entire statement here.
Lynch, who directed Stockwell in the actor’s great latter-career highlight Blue Velvet in 1986, invoked his friend’s name during his daily YouTube feature David Lynch’s Weather Report.
“Here in L.A., a cloudy morning,” Lynch intones in his immediately recognizable drone. “Very still right now, 55 degrees Fahrenheit, 13 Celsius. In honor of the great Dean Stockwell, I’d like to recommend today ‘Honky Tonk, Part 1’ by Bill Doggett.

It is hard to know where to begin and what to say first when it comes to Dennis Hopper, both on screen and off. As an actor he began in the late 50s with small roles in films like Rebel Without A Cause (1955) and numerous TV performances. James Dean was a hero and friend to Hopper. A great way to view Rebel Without A Cause is to watch Hopper’s intense studying of and admiration for Dean on screen in that film. Hopper was witness to so many periods of American culture, a complex masculine figure much like his friend and contemporary Harry Dean Stanton, the whiskey, cigarettes and American highway mythology follows his legacy. This mix scratches the surface of an iconic figure of 20th-century popular culture and a great artist, it is a time capsule with no linear trajectory, bending back and forth across genre and feeling.Coming...

For those who still scan liner notes in the streaming era, one credit on Neil Young’s new Archives Vol. II box — “Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young: Vocals” — will be both familiar and intriguing. The sight of those names on the collection, which dives into Young’s 1972–1976 work, is hardly a surprise; on and off, Young has worked with the other three men for more than 50 years. But these were the years when Csny fitfully worked on one of classic rock’s mythic, never-completed albums, Human Highway. And with no advance notice,...

"We made this in the spirit of lighthearted fun," Daryl Hannah said, staring out into crowd packed in to Austin's Paramount Theater. "So we hope you can relax your brains." A mellowed-out frontal lobe is pretty much a prerequisite for Paradox, the actor-turned-filmmaker's free-form collaboration with boyfriend Neil Young and his backing band Promise of the Real that the couple premiered at SXSW last night. Shot on both Super 8 and on Hannah's phone over four days in the Rockies between tour dates (and while everybody adjusted to the high altitude), it's a funny,...

Neil Young is an artist forever looking in two directions. He's currently focused on the future with his new band Promise of the Real, and also surveying his legacy as musician and filmmaker. It was the latter that brought Young to the Regal Theater in downtown Los Angeles for Monday's screening of Human Highway and Rust Never Sleeps, digitally restored and set for first-time DVD release.

On Monday night, Neil Young agreed to appear in “An Evening With Neil Young,” a special presentation beamed to movie theaters across America. He talked with Cameron Crowe about his 1979 concert film, “Rust Never Sleeps,” and a bizarre 1982 film he directed that co-starred two future cast members of “Twin Peaks.” To be clear: There was little if any public outcry for Young to revisit the latter film, “Human Highway,” about goofily charming people dopey enough to live in earthquake country in the shadow of a nuclear reactor. So why release it now? Because “Human Highway” changes everything we think...

Neil Young's surreal 1982 comedy Human Highway will finally get a nationwide theatrical release on February 29th. Tickets for An Evening With Neil Young will be available on January 15th.
Human Highway tells the story of a group of regulars at a small-town diner/gas station, with a nuclear power plant accidentally triggering the end of the world.

"Dance, dance, feel it all around you Dance, dance, dance, Never thought love had a rainbow on it See the girl dance See the girl dance."- Neil Young, "Dance, Dance, Dance"***When I watched Katy Perry’s recent Super Bowl performance I got very excited. There was a lot of shrieking. So much so that my roommate, who had been diligently watching screeners of important art films one floor below, came up to see what was happening. A friend who was over to watch the game, who I often go to repertory movies with, later told another friend he had never seen me so excited. The third friend watching it with us, she’s a writer, was also excited. In her excitement she sent all of her twitter friends a picture. In my own excitement I sent yet a fourth friend a text message. ******My text message may have been sent off haphazardly,...

The Toronto International Film Festival announced more selections Tuesday for the upcoming 2014 edition of the annual awards season kick-off. The majority of the festival's program was announced last month, but this group includes intriguing world premieres from notable directors such as Todd McCarthy ("The Cobbler") and Gina Prince-Bythewood ("Beyond the Lights"). A number of the titles revealed have screened at other festivals including the underrated "Infinitely Polar Bear" and "Laggies" from Sundance as well as Cannes players "Two Days, One Night," "The Search" and "Clouds of Sils Maria." And yes, the presence of "Sils Maria," which is a favorite of this particular writer, means Kristen Stewart will likely hit one of the festival's many red carpets. As you'd expect for Toronto, the world premieres feature some big names including Josh Hutcherson and Benicio Del Toro in "Escobar: Paradise Lost," Jean Dujardin in "The Connection (La French)," Dustin Hoffman in "Boychoir,...

This morning the Toronto Film Festival added several more films to their lineup including the world premiere of Thomas McCarthy's The Cobbler which stars Adam Sandler as a New York City cobbler who, disenchanted with the grind of daily life, stumbles upon a magical heirloom that allows him to step into the lives of his customers and see the world in a new way. The film co-stars Method Man, Ellen Barkin, Melonie Diaz, Dan Stevens, Steve Buscemi and Dustin Hoffman. Additionally, Sundance standouts Infinity Polar Bear and Laggies starring Keira Knightley and Chloe Grace Moretz were added to the Gala selection. Joining The Cobbler as new additions to the Special Presentations field include Olivier Assayas' Clouds of Sils Maria starring Kristen Stewart and Juliette Binoche and Two Days, One Night from Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne and starring Marion Cotillard. Both films made a splash at Cannes earlier this year,...

Just how much sway do Tiff programmers have? Looking at today’s Gala and Special Presentation add-ons, measurably, when it comes to films with star-wattage and acquisitions titles, the industry sides with high value world premiere slot in downtown Toronto. Complimenting Sundance (Maya Forbes’ Infinitely Polar Bear and Lynn Shelton’s Laggies) and Cannes (Assayas, the Dardennes), the wide net includes Francois Girard’s Boychoir, Richard Loncraine’s Ruth & Alex, Gina Prince-Bythewood’s Beyond the Lights, Thomas McCarthy’s The Cobbler, Shira Piven’s Welcome to Me, and in a very Gustave Flaubert type of year includes Anne Fontaine’s Gemma Bovery and Sophie Barthes’ Madame Bovary. In directorial debuts, Henry Hobson presents Maggie, actor Paul Bettany presents Shelter (see pic of star and his wife above), Andrea Di Stefano’s Escobar: Paradise Lost and Philip Martin’s The Forger. It was supposed to be something holy, for God’s sake, when old Ernie sat down at the piano . . . I swear to God, If I were a piano player, or an actor or something, and all those dopes thought I was terrific, I’d hate it. I wouldn’t even want them to clap for me. People always clap at the wrong things. If I were a piano player, I’d play it in the goddamn closet.
