The anime in-joke of WcDonald's is no longer just that, as McDonald's began an official anime campaign featuring the notorious upside-down naming with anime, manga and other Japanese pop culture promotions. To start, four anime shorts produced by Studio Pierrot will release over four weeks with a simultaneous manga chapter released on WcDonalds.com . Each episode will focus on a specific genre — Action, Romance, Mecha and Fantasy — with the first Action short available now in sub and dub. Catering directly to my interests, the Criterion Channel’s January lineup boasts two of my favorite things: James Gray and cats. In the former case it’s his first five features (itself a terrible reminder he only released five movies in 20 years); the latter shows felines the respect they deserve, from Kuroneko to The Long Goodbye, Tourneur’s Cat People and Mick Garris’ Sleepwalkers. Meanwhile, Ava Gardner, Bertrand Tavernier, Isabel Sandoval, Ken Russell, Juleen Compton, George Harrison’s HandMade Films, and the Sundance Film Festival get retrospectives.
Restorations of Soviet sci-fi trip Ikarie Xb 1, The Unknown, and The Music of Regret stream, as does the recent Plan 75. January’s Criterion Editions are Inside Llewyn Davis, Farewell Amor, The Incredible Shrinking Man, and (most intriguingly) the long-out-of-print The Man Who Fell to Earth, Blu-rays of which go for hundreds of dollars.

Fandoms everywhere can now rejoice, for in October Our Flag Means Death finally returns to our screens for its second season. Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi will be romancing the high seas once more thanks to an enormous outpouring of love and support from the show’s fans. The safety of the cult favorite is not yet known beyond season two, but if this one is as good as the first, it certainly won’t be for lack of trying.

Sometimes, dead is better. That’s the lesson in Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, an origin tale about the ominous graveyard in Stephen King’s novel, which resurrects anything buried in it. Set in 1969, the film stars Jackson White as young Jud Crandall (played in the 1989 flick by Fred Gwynne), who discovers his family’s role in an age-old curse. Bloodlines is full of frights, famous faces and King staples such as… (Credit: Philippe Bosse/Paramount Players) It’s set in Maine. King’s home state has inspired many of the towns in his works, be it Ludlow in this film, It’s Derry or Needful Things’ Castle Rock. There are creepy critters. The Green Mile has a resurrected mouse, Mr. Jingles. Cat’s Eye followed a feline that saved a girl and, of course, there’s Cujo, the rabid Saint Bernard that could give Pet’s undead mutt a bloody run for...

In a career so far spanning 50 years, Stephen King has published 65 novels (with a 66th imminent) and more than 200 short stories. His books have sold more than 400 million copies worldwide, and have been regularly snapped up for film and TV adaptation. As a brand name, King is almost as prolific on screen as in print, with at least 60 movies (not even including the eight sequels to Children Of The Corn) and 50 shows to date, with more always incoming.
Cinematically, however, while some of the author’s adaptations are clear-eyed classics, the King association has not always been a guarantee of quality. In the early days, the gold rush to mine his back catalogue yielded more turkeys than treasure. So, with Rob Savage out this week (based on a 1973 short story in King’s _Night Shift collection), Empire have put together a list of the 15 greatest big-screen versions of the legendary scribe’s stories.

Rodolphe Belmer, the former CEO of Canal+ Group, who recently took the helm of France’s leading commercial channel TF1, said the company looks to forge deeper ties with streaming services, including Netflix, to team on premium content.
Belmer, who was part of Netflix’s administration board from 2018 to 2022, explained TF1 is facing a dearth of U.S. content available for its primetime slots. “U.S. series are less and less available because of the vertical integration of big U.S. production companies and networks, so we have to replace the bulk of these programs,” said Belmer, who recently succeeded to Gilles Pelisson as CEO and chairman of TF1.
The French executive pointed out these U.S. shows are not easy to replace because they pulled some of the highest ratings on primetime TF1 and were “very profitable because the costs to acquire them were largely below the advertising revenues they generated.

This Young Justice: Phantoms review contains spoilers.
Young Justice: Phantoms Season 4 Episode 24
It’s not possible for the Young Justice: Phantoms team to be reading what’s published on this little ol’ site and responding to it in almost real time. The lead time on animation is usually massive: what we see on HBO Max was probably written a year or more ago. That said, it certainly feels like the writers were thinking the same thing I was after last week: holy cats there’s a lot left to do.
And this week they started crossing stuff off their list.
General Zod
By my count, we’ve got three episodes left, and three villains that the story is orbiting around. The first is General Zod, who along with a Phantom Zone-brainwashed Conner Kent, spends much of the episode kicking the asses of the original team minus M’gann.

Steven Spielberg is responsible for many things in the film world, including the popular spate of “animals attack” films of the ‘70s and early ‘80s, whether he liked it or not. One of the best of these films was the 1980 monster-in-a-city flick, Alligator, out this week in a 4K/Blu-ray combo release from Scream Factory. Directed by Lewis Teague, the film was script-doctored into significance by screenwriter John Sayles. Anyway, the plot of Alligator is basically that a...

Early this year, “General Hospital” killed off Luke Spencer, the iconic character who was played by Anthony Geary on and off for decades. Luke’s current wife Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot) turned up at the door of his ex-wife Laura (Genie Francis) — whose coupledom with Luke sent “General Hospital” to its stratospheric heights in the early 1980s — to tell her the tragic news. Luke had been killed, under mysterious circumstances, of course, in a cable-car accident in Austria.
On Friday, the show memorialized Luke, with his old friends gathering to celebrate him on the Haunted Star.
Frank Valentini, the executive producer of “General Hospital,” isn’t doing interviews about why he decided to kill off Luke now, especially since Geary, who is 74, hasn’t been on the show since a guest appearance in 2017. Thorsten Kaye just earned his second consecutive Best Actor nomination at the Daytime Emmys for “The Bold and the Beautiful,” but it’s his sixth bid overall. He’s one of the most nominated actors in the category, but he hasn’t won yet, which makes him the second most nominated actor without a win here. Will this finally be his year?
Only 10 men have more Best Actor nominations than Kaye, led by Peter Bergman with 22 bids and three wins over his decades of work on “All My Children” and “The Young and the Restless.” But only one of those 10 actors never won the award: the late great James Mitchell, who dominated the 1980s by earning all seven of his Best Actor nominations during that decade for playing Palmer Cortlandt on “AMC.” He kept playing Palmer until 2009, but wasn’t nominated again and never took home an Emmy.

Ever since launching his career in 2002 with the independent action-horror thriller, Dog Soldiers—a bracing, fresh werewolves-vs.-soldiers exercise—the writer and director Neil Marshall has been devoted to genre filmmaking. His second film, The Descent, is a generally acknowledged modern horror classic, and since then he’s branched out to post-apocalyptic action, historical thrillers and high fantasy before returning again to horror.
His sixth and latest film, The Reckoning, stars Charlotte Kirk (who co-wrote the script) as a young woman who is accused of witchcraft in northern England in 1665 after losing her husband to the Great Plague. With its period setting and story of unjust persecution and hysteria directed against women in particular, The Reckoning (which just premiered on Shudder) channels some of the old Hammer Studios vibe, as well as that of iconic British films on the same topic like Witchfinder General.

By our estimate, there are some 87 different theatrical movies, TV or streaming movies, TV series and limited series based on the works of Stephen King. Knock off the nine Children of the Corn sequels and the two additional Mangler movies, and you’ve still got a significant bounty of King-inspired content to plow through, even if not all of them are exactly top-tier fare.
We’ve curated that list down to a manageable three dozen or so, both big and small screen, that are 1) all available for streaming and 2) significant or notable in some way. Your mileage may vary, and you may want to dig deeper for a few favorites we’ve left out. But we’re satisfied that this is a King list fans can easily binge for weeks on end — whether you’re trapped by a raging snowstorm in an empty hotel or locked in your house due to an apocalyptic pandemic.

The Weinstein Company and its fired co-chairman, Harvey Weinstein, have been served two new California civil lawsuits in the past 24 hours. Each plaintiff is an actress listed as Jane Doe, but the second case is a class action suit that could amass many more accusers.
On November 14, TMZ first reported a lawsuit in which a woman claims Weinstein raped her at the Montage Beverly Hills hotel in 2016 after she was falsely told that she’d been cast in the now-cancelled Netflix series “Marco Polo,” which he executive produced. She said that the assault began with Weinstein performing unwanted oral sex on her, then penetrating her without a condom as she attempted to fight him off. At the same hotel in 2015, she was allegedly forced to watch the studio chief masturbate while he clutched her wrists with his free hand.

Former television news anchor Heather Unruh claims actor Kevin Spacey sexually assaulted her teenage son, CBS Boston reports.
During a news conference on Wednesday morning, with attorney Mitchell Garabedian, Unruh alleged the assault happened in July 2016 on Nantucket when her son was drunk at the Club Car restaurant.
Fighting back tears, she said her son was a "starstruck, straight, 18-year-old young man who had no idea that the famous actor was an alleged sexual predator, or that he was about to become his next victim."

A middling entry in the genre of blow-it-up big action spectacles, Paul Wendkos’ Spain-filmed western gives us all the excitement promised by the poster, but with some cardboard characters and lumpy storytelling. George Peppard is on the job, however, and once again proves he can carry a big picture, flaws and all.

The Call Of Duty videogame series is, as gamers will attest, a juggernaut. It attracts revenues akin to those of blockbuster movies, cost about as much to make, and every year, queues of people turn up for a midnight opening to get their hands on the new release. Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be the last time we see Carrie Fisher on screen as Princess Leia Organa. Fisher’s tragic passing at the end of last year was met with heartbreak throughout the Star Wars community. After all, us fans had seen her character grow from an ambassador on a diplomatic mission to one of the key leaders in the Rebellion, and an essential part of taking down the Empire. The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson spoke with Entertainment Weekly and commented on Leia’s journey through the films of the franchise:
“Her character to some degree or another has been defined by loss through this whole saga, starting with the loss of her home planet. She’s just taken hit after hit, and she’s borne it, and she focuses on moving forward and the task at hand.”
Johnson’s words ring true. Leia lost her mother at birth,...

For more than a year, there have been no arrests in the April 2016 massacre of the Rhoden family in which many of the eight family members were fatally shot multiple times. Police say that the victims were shot “execution-style,” and none appeared to be a suicide. The killer – or killers – are still at large.
But on Tuesday, police charged a witness with two felony charges of vandalism and tampering with evidence in the unsolved case.
James Manley, the brother of one of the victims, allegedly destroyed a Gps device that was being used in the investigation. People confirms the charges.

A popular Maine meteorologist who committed suicide last month was the lone suspect in a sexual assault case, police say.
Tom Johnston, who worked at a local news station, was reported missing on April 3, Oxford County Sheriff Wayne Gallant said at a recent news conference. His body was found three days later in a wooded area in Auburn and police determined the 46-year-old had committed suicide.
Gallant said that Johnston was “the one and only suspect” in a sexual assault case and would have been charged for the crime if he were still alive.

This year, the April 29 anniversary of the Rodney King riots became a recognized event on the programming calendar. Over the next week, networks are releasing a half-dozen nonfiction narratives to commemorate the 25 years since the Los Angeles uprising, including three from some of our most compelling African-American filmmakers: Spike Lee, John Singleton, and John Ridley.
“Black directors have different viewpoints,” said Lee, who directed writer-actor Roger Guenveur Smith’s one-man show “Rodney King” for Netflix. “We don’t see the world all the same.”

Ridley and Singleton took a more traditional path to the material, digging into period video archives and interviewing many of the people directly involved in the riots that yielded 55 lives lost, 1,100 buildings destroyed by fire, and some $1 billion in property damage.
