Ask Bruce Campbell, and he’ll tell you he’s “sick of over-trained heroes. I’m really bored with that. Guys that are just ripped to shreds and, you know, full of skills. That’s boring to me. Give me the mechanic that picks up a weapon, you know? Now I’m interested. That’s my hero. That could be me.”
Ash Williams of the Evil Dead franchise is that hero. Part of the lasting appeal of the best character Bruce Campbell has ever played is that the audience can see themselves in him, like if they were pressed into fighting an army of Deadites, they could take up the mantle, the chainsaw, the boomstick, and mow down wave after wave of the undead masses.
He is a man that should have been an A-List superstar and in the eyes of his fanbase he is…. which is all that really matters in the end.

Canadian musical act Crystal Castles is blowing up on TikTok, but new fans should be made aware of the controversy surrounding the now-defunct band and allegations made by former singer Alice Glass.
The electropunk band, which formed in 2006 and has been inactive since 2017, is making waves yet again thanks to songs like "Transgender" and "Crimewave" appearing in popular videos on TikTok.
Heralding from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the group consisted of songwriter-producer Ethan Kath and singer-songwriter Alice Glass; however, Glass left the band in 2014 and was replaced by singer Edith Frances.

Let’s be honest, it’s a weird time out there in the world of streaming movies. As the major streamers continue to mess around with their apps and libraries, adding ad-tiers or changing their names to nonsense words that have nothing to do with the brand, they’re also charging more for less. As Netflix, Max, and Amazon Prime decrease in value, free streaming services become a better deal.
But just because you’re not shelling out any cash doesn’t mean that you want a terrible experience. If you know where to look, you can find hundreds of movies available online, completely for free. And no, I’m not referring to those sketchy sites you used to visit in college. I’m talking about services that let you watch full-length movies completely for free. Sure, you’ll need to watch a few ads to get the movies, but...

This article contains mild spoilers for "Evil Dead Rise.""Evil Dead Rise," the latest installment in the now 40-odd-year-old "Evil Dead" franchise, is filled to the brim with evidence of writer/director Lee Cronin's bonafides toward being a fan of the series. While the film isn't merely a work of fan service, the movie is suffused with references to the earlier "Evil Dead" films, from Deadites screaming "Dead by dawn!" to a very particular clock being seen at a cabin in the film's opening sequence.
Yet Cronin isn't content with paying homage to just the "Evil Dead" series — in addition to multiple references to Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining," "Evil Dead Rise" contains some latent homages to numerous other horror films, including Lamberto Bava's similar demons-loose-in-a-high-rise splatter opus, "Demons 2." Most surprisingly, however, "Evil Dead Rise" appears to have a good deal in common with another Sam Raimi film,...

If you think two independent, ultra-gory, unrated horror movies getting a big(ger) budget third sequel made by a major Hollywood studio sounds unlikely, then let me remind you of a little movie called "Army of Darkness?" Strange but true — the follow-up to "The Evil Dead" and "Evil Dead 2" (subtitled "Dead By Dawn" if ya nasty) is a lightly-r-rated affair that sees hapless hero Ash (Bruce Campbell) thrust into a fantasized version of the Middle Ages, one that tones down the gushing blood and bodily dismemberment of the prior films before replacing them with rampaging skeletons and exploding catapults ... and it was made by Universal Pictures.
It's a sequel that is equal parts expensive as it is expansive, especially for a franchise that began as the quintessential "cabin in the woods" horror film. In addition to Universal footing the bills for the movie, they were also in charge of distributing and marketing it.

We here at /Film love ourselves some Sam Raimi. The auteur filmmaker has been dazzling audiences for over 40 years, with genre-bending films like "The Evil Dead," "Crimewave," "The Quick and the Dead," "Darkman," "Drag Me to Hell," and the original "Spider-Man" films, not to mention lending his hand to TV shows like "Xena: Warrior Princess," "M.A.N.T.I.S.," and "Hercules." Raimi's refusal to be pigeon-holed into one genre and his unapologetic love of taking huge creative risks have made him a favorite of film fans everywhere.

We all have to start somewhere. Before Joel and Ethan Coen got their directorial feature Blood Simple off the ground, they needed something to show to investors. In order to pique the interests of Hollywood producers so they’d greenlight the work of two Minnesota no-name brothers, they created a pitch trailer. We can now see this proof-of-concept video from the Coens, with a hat tip to Vanity Fair.
The duo were good friends with Evil Dead creator Sam Raimi (and went on to write his 1985 film Crimewave), who convinced the pair to make the video pitch. Raimi also got them in touch with Bruce Campbell, who plays Julian Marty in the clip — a role that would go to Dan Hedaya in the feature version. The scene itself features some very Raimi-esque camera swoops, namely overtop a car, along with gorgeous imagery of a bullet-ridden wall that would make its...

If ever there were a question for the ages, it is surely this: Why isn’t Sam Raimi more widely worshipped as a creative genius? Sure, his resume features things like For The Love Of The Game, and Drag Me To Hell, but these are far outweighed by films such as Crimewave, A Simple Plan, and The Gift. His real legacy, however, is the Evil Dead franchise – feverishly adored by millions the world over, and the subject of constant demands for more. These demands are, finally, about to be met when Ash Vs Evil Dead debuts on Starz this Halloween, but a recent promotional event has led to a tantalising glimpse of what once might have been, had the original trilogy continued in cinema.

1985 was the year of Back To The Future, Rocky IV and Rambo II. But what about these 20 movies, that also deserve a fair share of love?
Thirty years ago, Marty McFly was riding high with the smash hit Back To The Future, while Sylvester Stallone enjoyed his most successful year yet with the one-two punch of Rambo: First Blood Part II and Rocky IV. It was an era of family sci-fi and teen comedies and bullet-spraying action, where The Breakfast Club and Teen Wolf rubbed shoulders with Death Wish 3 and Commando. Then there were low-key dramas like Out Of Africa and The Color Purple, which were both awards magnets at the Oscars.
Away from all those big hits, 1985 saw the release of a wealth of less successful movies, some of which found a second life on the then-huge home video circuit. Here's our pick of 20 underappreciated films from the year of Rambo,...

From his modest start in that ramshackle cabin in the woods what must seem like a lifetime ago, Sam Raimi has become one of the more versatile and beloved directors in Hollywood. With Scream Factory's Blu-ray release of Darkman today, we bring you our Top 9 Sam Raimi Films - Horror and Otherwise.
We're going to keep this list to films directed by Raimi. If we were to include the movies he's acted in, or god forbid produced, we'd be here all night. Outside of Martin Scorsese, there are very few clean slates in Hollywood – and even He has Bringing Out The Dead blotting his copybook (discuss…). The Coen brothers though, have created an unbroken conga-line of stunningly original movies, mixing and mastering genres, and even creating new ones.
If there was a bump in the road in 1994 time, it seems, has since been kind to The Hudsucker Proxy. A bigger budget (courtesy of ’80s alpha-producer Joel Silver) and an initially unresponsive family audience had it labelled as the Coen’s first flop, but watched now its pleasures are myriad and unmistakably Coenesque (including a great, late-vintage performance from Paul Newman).
The Coens announced themselves to the world in 1984 with the instant neo-noir classic, Blood Simple. Now, just mull the following subsequent film titles over in your mind like a mouthful of Chateau Petrus. Raising Arizona, Miller’s Crossing, Barton Fink, The Hudsucker Proxy,...

With their new film Inside Llewyn Davis hitting UK cinemas this week, here’s our indispensable guide to the richly inventive and playful world of brothers Joel and Ethan Coen.

This is the international title of the 2009 Chinese remake of Blood Simple, which Ethan and Joel both received a story credit for. I just watched Evil Dead 2 again because it popped up on Netflix recently. I loved that movie. It's just ridiculous on so many levels. In a recent profile in THR, actor Bruce Campbell, writer Scott Spiegel, and producer Rob Tapert got together to talk about their experience bringing the classic horror movie to life. There's a lot of fun trivia about the movies that I thought was really cool and interesting.
A few things mentioned include that Sam Raimi wanted to call the sequel Medieval Dead. They all shared a house with the Coen Brothers, Frances McDormand, and Holly Hunter. They also reveal that Stephen King helped get Evil Dead a distribution deal, which I wasn't aware of. This is definitely worth checking out, so here ya go!
Campbell (actor): The first Evil Dead was shot throughout '81 and '82. Then we went out to make a second film,...

Award-winning actor renowned for her work on Broadway and roles in classic films such as East of Eden and The Haunting
Unable to make sufficient money from her novels, the great American writer Carson McCullers took advice from Tennessee Williams and allowed one of her masterpieces to be adapted for the theatre. The resultant success of The Member of the Wedding (1950) widened her fame, and made a Broadway star of Julie Harris, who has died aged 87.
The play's main character is Frankie Addams, a gawky 12-year-old who longs for companionship and the "we of me". Although the second juvenile role, in what is essentially a three-hander, went to a child actor, Brandon de Wilde, the complex part of Frankie fell to Harris, who was then 24. DC favorite, filmmaker/author Stephen Romano, knows his classic sleazy cinema better than anyone. That's why when we wrote in with some surprising news, we had no choice but to share it. Read on for the details surrounding Shout! Factory's release of Sam Raimi's Crimewave!
"As far as I know, and according to Bruce Campbell's commentary, this film was never actually (or at least widely) released in movie theaters," Romano tells us. "We all caught up with this on tape and on cable, back in the 1980s. I still have my VHS copy, which I've watched at least 20-30 times over the years, it being one of my very favorite Raimi Movies. I'm the guy who can literally quote chapter and verse from the dialogue. You need to know this about me because today I watched the Shout! Factory Blu-ray edition for the first time, and it turns...

This week: Some love for the maligned Cloud Atlas, Sam Raimi's long-lost Crimewave, and Leatherface goes 3D. ► Ambition wasn’t rewarded for Cloud Atlas, which doesn’t bode well for more movies like this any time soon. That’s a shame, because this one had it all – a fascinating script, superb special effects (when needed), and most importantly a drive to confront its audience with ideas and...

Bruce Campbell cemented himself as a horror icon thanks to his role as Ash Williams in Sam Raimi's Evil Dead films. It's been more than 20 years since we last saw Ash wake up in a post-apocalyptic future (or slay a demon in a convenience store, depending on your favoured ending), but the character is very much back in Campbell's mind with the Fede Alvarez-directed remake about to hit cinemas along with a Blu-ray release for Evil Dead II.
Digital Spy got on the phone with Campbell - currently filming what could be Burn Notice's last season in Miami - to chat about producing the remake for the fans, the much-awaited Army of Darkness 2 and the art of autographing flesh.
The press notes for the Evil Dead II Blu-ray call it the most "deranged and demented" horror movie ever - was the making of it as crazy as that would suggest?...

Joel and Ethan Coen have long been known as writer/directors who typically direct the scripts that they pen, but in recent years that has slowly been changing. There was of course Crimewave back in 1985, which the duo co-wrote with Sam Raimi, but last year their screenplay for the remake of the crime comedy Gambit was put into production with Michael Hoffman at the helm and Colin Firth and Cameron Diaz starring; and now the brothers have taken on another writing assignment that they don't plan to helm themselves. The Hollywood Reporter has learned that the Coens are the now the latest writing team to try and tackle the long in-development biopic about the legendary Lou Zamperini, a project that already has Angelina Jolie set to direct. Titled Unbroken, the film will be an adaptation of Laura Hillenbrand's book of the same name and tell the amazing true story...

Shout! Factory releases Crimewave in a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack May 14. The first film by director Sam Raimi and producers Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell, who also has a supporting role as “Renaldo the Heel,” following The Evil Dead, it’s the bizarre story (scripted by Raimi, Joel Coen and Ethan Coen) of a security guard (Reed Birney) framed for murder, who flashes back to his story while sitting in the electric chair. The real killers are a couple of exterminators (Brion James and Paul L. Smith) who double as hitmen, who set out to eliminate the man who hired them and his wife (Louise Lasser). The discs will present the movie in anamorphic 1.78:1 widescreen, with Dolby Digital sound on the DVD and DTS-hd Master Audio on the Blu-ray. Fango got the scoop that special features will include audio commentary by Campbell, plus new interviews with Campbell and others...

Price: Blu-ray/DVD Combo $26.99
Studio: Shout! Factory
The 1985 low-budget comedy crime film Crimewave is an early effort by director Sam Raimi (Spider-Man) and screenwriters Joel and Ethan Coen (A Serious Man), all of whom have gone on to decidedly bigger things in their careers.
In the film, the head of a security systems company is bumped off by two gonzo exterminators (Brion James and Paul Smith) who have gone from stomping out pesky varmints to stomping out human targets. The exterminators go after the partner (Edward R. Pressman) who hired them and his blatantly obnoxious wife (Louise Lasser, TV’s Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman) and, in the meantime, frame a poor security guard (Reed Birney, Twelve Thirty) for the murder of the company boss.

Born in the Big Apple in january of 1951, Sheldon Lettich moved with his family to the West Coast at a young age. After finishing High School, he joined the Marine Corps, serving his country for four years, one of them as a Radio Operator in Vietnam.
Partially based upon his experiences in Southeast Asia, he co-authored Tracers, a play seen in the Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago and London stages, to great acclaim; It subsequently won the prestigious Drama Desk and L.A. Drama Critics Awards.
The writing of screenplays seemed like a natural progression and his writing eventually began attracting the attention of many Hollywood producers.
Since then, Lettich has become known as expert in testosterone-driven action extravaganzas, many of the films starring some of the silver screen´s best-loved slugfest protagonists: Sylvester Stallone (Sheldon shared screenwriting credit with Sly in the third cinematic episode of the Rambo series,...

The first screenplay by Ethan and Joel Coen that they haven’t directed in almost three decades – since they co-wrote Crimewave with Sam Raimi and let him helm it – Gambit puts paid to the notion that only the Coen Brothers can direct a Coen Brothers script. Still, that’s not to excuse the pair for what is evidently a lukewarm remake of the 1966 Michael Caine-starring con caper, doing its charming cast a huge disservice, entirely a consequence of a script that reads like a first draft, alongside a director who doesn’t seem to know what to do with it.
Colin Firth plays a foppish British art curator named Harry Deane, who decides to exact revenge on his churlish boss, Lord Lionel Shabandar (Alan Rickman), by tricking him into buying a fake Monet painting, with the help of an effervescent if slightly unpredictable Texan rodeo Queen,...

From the very start of their career, there haven't been very many cases where The Coen Brothers didn't both write and direct their own movies. There is the early Sam Raimi collaboration Crimewave, which they wrote but did not direct, and there is the somewhat middling George Clooney / Catherine Zeta-Jones comedy Intolerable Cruelty, for which they shared screenwriting credit with Robert Ramsey and Matthew Stone. Now we are about to see what another Coen Brothers script looks like in the hands of a different filmmaker with the upcoming caper flick Gambit. Gambit is a remake of the 1966 film of the same name that starred Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine. Colin Firth plays an art curator who wants to get revenge on his boss (Alan Rickman) by conning him with the help of a rodeo queen (Cameron Diaz). The story seems pretty different from the original and the dialogue definitely has that unmistakable Coen Brothers wit.

Okay, both Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell spent the past week praising the upcoming Evil Dead remake. On August 21, Raimi told Collider that the film will be R-rated ("…or worse.") and is "…so bloody, it will make your head spin." That same day on the Coming Soon website, Campbell recognized that fans are angry over the remake, but promised it "…will be as memorable as (the original) Evil Dead without being the same film."
Of course, the Internet will continue to be abuzz with hatred for the remake, even though no footage has been released yet. But such early responses dismiss the fact that the remake might be pretty good. Hey, it could happen! So here's a five-step program for all Deadite fans to help calm your nerves and view the project with an open mind.

We've been slowly tracking the progress of the film Gambit, which is a Joel and Ethan Coen-scripted [1] remake of a British romantic heist film that originally starred Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine. The Last Station director Michael Hoffman was hired [2] to direct last year after Doug Liman flirted [3] with the project for a while, and Colin Firth has a deal to play the lead [4]. Now Cameron Diaz has been cast in the Shirley MacLaine role. Deadline [5] says the film will shoot in London this May, so after being revived from the 'stalled in development' pile last year and slowly gathering talent, it looks like the movie is ready to go. Still, Cameron Diaz isn't the person I would have picked to play opposite Colin Firth, who I think is a pretty great casting choice for the role Michael Caine originated. One step forward, one step back, I guess. And...

It’s quite rare for the Coen brothers to write something and then not direct it. The only two examples are Crimewave, directed by Sam Raimi and The Naked Man, directed by Coen’s go-to storyboard artist J. Todd Anderson. We have another film to add to that list. The brothers wrote a remake of the 1966 British action comedy Gambit, which starred Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine. With The Last Station’s Michael Hoffman attached to direct, Deadline now reports we have a lead.
Colin Firth, Oscar front-runner for the excellent The King’s Speech, is in talks to star. Firth will play “a cat burglar who attempts to rob a billionaire of his priceless statue. He enlists the help of a waitress who looks exactly like the victim’s dead wife. The burglar’s usual precision is clouded by his relationship with his accomplice.”

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment was kind enough to send us a review copy of the Blu-ray release of “The Evil Dead” written and directed by Sam Raimi (Spider-Man trilogy, Drag Me To Hell) and produced by Robert G. Tapert (Drag Me To Hell, The Grudge). Its cast features Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness), Ellen Sandweiss (My Name is Bruce), Hal Delrich (Crimewave), Betsy Baker (TV’s “Southland”, “E.R.”) and Sarah York (TV’s “Dangerous Women”). Five Michigan State University students venture into the hills to spend a weekend at an isolated cabin. There they discover an ancient Sumerian text, known as the “Morturom Demonto”; roughly translated as “The Book of [...]...

Buried at the bottom of a Variety piece about a new script optioned at Castle Rock by producer Mike Lobell is a bit of news about what might be the next film from the Coen Brothers-- but only as writers. While the two are hard at work putting together their remake of the Western True Grit, Lobell is apparently busy selling a script from the Coens that's a take on the 1966 British caper comedy Gambit, which starred Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine. The production has apparently been going in stops and starts for years now, and Lobell is currently seeking a new director, which presumably means that the Coens won't be directing their own screenplay. That would be the first time that happened since they wrote 1985's Crimewave for buddy Sam Raimi, and obviously this is a totally different scenario. Why have the Coens left the project alone, and what...

Call them "cult classics." "Guilty pleasures." "Comfort movies." We all have a mental rolodex of flicks that may not be terribly popular but, for one reason or another, they resonate in a very special way. Maybe you saw it at the right moment. Maybe you just see gold where everyone else sees feces. Whatever the case, these are the special favorites that you keep stashed away for sick days. Here are some of ours.
I saw "A Serious Man" last night. It was excellent. Better than that even. Joel and Ethan Coen have wrangled quite a few star-powered talents into quirky, offbeat roles over the years, but "Serious" excels even without a George Clooney or a Jeff Bridges in your face for the whole time. It is easily my favorite effort from the brothers Coen since "The Big Lebowski."

These days the one question that everybody seems to be asking me is, in their oh-so eloquent way, “what’s up with the new Raimi movie…any good?” Now that I’ve seen it, I am very happy to be able to report, yes…yes it is.
The reviews are already in for Drag Me To Hell and I think Michael Gingold (of Fangoria - read his take here) and Allan Dart (of Starlog - read his take here) sum it up very nicely. So if you’re interested in accurate analyses from writers that really seem to get the film and Raimi’s sensibilities, I wholeheartedly recommend you give those reviews a “gander”. Since I’m coming late to the party, I’m going to avoid giving my thoughts strictly about the film and instead take a brief look at Mr. Raimi, his style and his work.

Let’s first clear up what a “family-friendly” horror movie is. Clearly, you’re not going to want to show this stuff to squeamish little siblings if it’s just going to scar them. Unless it’s part of your plan of course, but that’s your own business. Sam Raimi’s “Drag Me To Hell,” out this week, has been designated by the MPAA as kosher for all human Americans aged 13 and older. From what I hear, it’s also a hella scary ride.
Director Sam Raimi is very good at capturing disturbing imagery on film. Stuff that just doesn’t quite look right. There’s his “Evil Dead” series of course. And the hard-to-find classic “Crimewave” (written by Ethan and Joel Coen) is filled with twisted absurdity. Even “Spider-Man” had its share of chilling imagery and occasional jump scares.
