His vision transformed American theater. But he didn't live to see the debut of his greatest work on Broadway. Eugene O'Neill achieved fame in the 1920s with a series of powerful plays exploring pain, loneliness, family and loss. His works were instrumental in leading American theater away from Vaudeville and toward serious entertainment. But he had gone twenty years without a hit before the posthumous success of Long Day's Journey Into Night. This feature-length BIOGRAPHY® reveals how O'Neill worked his entire life to come to grips with the dark secrets of his family, and how this struggle took a deep personal toll on him while propelling his work to transcendent heights. Playwrights and actors like Edward Albee, John Guare and Gabriel Byrne explore his towering legacy, while a more personal view of his life is provided by his grandchildren and other confidantes.
