Andrew Garfield shared insights into his early days in Hollywood, experiences working on the Spider-Man franchise and thoughts about Red Sea International Festival Festival during his masterclass at the festival today.
He shared the stage with Saudi producer and Red Sea Film Foundation head Mohammed Al Turki, an old friend whom he’d worked with on indie feature 99 Homes in 2014. Directed by Iranian-us filmmaker Ramin Bahrani, 99 Homes was set during the recession period of the late 2000s when many Americans were losing their homes.
“It was an interesting group of us making that film,” Garfield remembered. “There was Ramin who was an American filmmaker but of a very different cultural heritage, then Mo of Saudi heritage and me of English heritage. So there was this melting pot bunch of people who felt maybe like they were outsiders in a certain way, telling a story about what it is to be an outsider.

Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell showcase their much-discussed chemistry in the first trailer for Sony Pictures’ romantic comedy “Anyone but You,” premiering in theaters on Dec. 22.
Directed by Will Gluck (“Easy A”), “Anyone but You” has been touted as a loose modernization of Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing.” The film’s official logline reads, “When college arch-nemeses reunite years after graduation for a destination wedding, they pretend to be a couple for their own personal reasons. But through pretending, they actually fall in love.”
“Let’s just tell everyone we’re together,” Sweeney says to Powell while they take a sunset sailboat ride. “There’s no way we could convince anyone we actually like each other,” he responds. Though the two roll their eyes, footage flashing throughout the trailer makes it clear their chemistry is undeniable.

Film musicals. You love them or you hate them. Your cringe-o-meter pings into the red or your heart swells with joy, and I’m not convinced there’s any in-between. There once was a time, though, when a simple tune had the ability to stitch itself into the cultural fabric for anyone and everyone. What’s changed?
In recent years, we’ve been served the hip-hop-infused, cultural soup of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton and In the Heights, the chart music bombast of The Greatest Showman, even stabs at nostalgia via Disney reboots and the Golden Era homage La La Land, the inevitable Broadway adaptation of which was announced last week. They tell good stories, have high-budget productions, and rake it in at the box office. At the centre of it all, though, I’m not convinced I hear any truly timeless melodies to be remembered or rebooted for the years to come.

“In a world of ones and zeroes, you are the absolute master.” So declares the late Dr. Silas Stone (Joe Morton) to his son Victor (Ray Fisher) aka Cyborg in Justice League. Thanks to Silas’s cutting-edge technology and some help from a Mother Box, Cyborg has not only super-strength but also complete control over the internet. “No firewall can stop you, no encryption can defy you,” Silas intones via tape recorder.
While it was Flash entering the Speed Force and not the Cyborg sequence that won the fan-voted “Cheer-worthy Moment” award for Zack Snyder’s Justice League at this year’s Oscar ceremony, reports suggest that advanced technology was at play. The Oscar frontrunner for Best Sound, “Dune,” reaped a bid for Best Sound Mixing at the the Cinema Audio Society Awards on January 25 as as did two of the other predicted Oscar nominees: “No Time to Die” and “West Side Story.” Also in contention with the Cas are “The Power of the Dog” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” They bumped two of our predicted Oscar nominees: “Belfast” and “tick, tick… Boom!”
The upcoming Oscars mark the second year for the Best Sound category, which combines Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing. The Cas honors the latter while the Motion Picture Sound Editors salute achievements in the former.
Last year four of the five Cas contenders — “Greyhound,” “Mank,” “News of the World and “Sound of Metal” — reaped Oscar bids. The fifth, “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” was bumped by “Soul,” which had vied in the animated race at the Cas Awards.

Heading into the 2022 Oscars, Netflix has a lot to prove. The streaming giant has already won a total of 15 trophies through the years, and they should be adding significantly to that number. After all, Netflix kept the proverbial lights on for the movie industry during the Covid-19 pandemic as theaters around the country shut down. “Roma” is the company’s biggest winner to date with three Oscars, followed by “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “Mank” with two apiece. In terms of major categories, Alfonso Cuarón claimed Best Director for “Roma” while Laura Dern took home Best Supporting Actress for “Marriage Story.” Scroll through our photo gallery above to see all of the historical Netflix Oscar movies, beginning with the most recent winners.

West Side Story, Dear Evan Hansen and In the Heights have all been box office flops this year, which has led to a questioning of the genre’s place in Hollywood
In a very strange year for movies, the failure of Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story is perhaps the most head-scratching development of all. The remake of the beloved 1961 musical grossed just $10m on its opening weekend, and while the film could certainly improve upon its lackluster debut over the holidays, it caps a year of disappointments for fans of the movie musical. In the Heights kicked off the summer with poor ticket sales and accusations of colorism for failing to have enough Afro-Latino actors in its cast. Dear Evan Hansen created the rare consensus of the year, hated by critics and audiences alike, and endured prolonged mockery on social media for its casting of the crow’s-footed Ben Platt as its teenaged protagonist.

Tiny gasps and squeals gave way to shrieking and thunderous applause at the world premiere of Lin-Manuel Miranda's directorial debut tick, tick... Boom last night at the AFI Festival. And that was just from one of the numbers. We shan't spoil the surprises but let's just say that if you're a musical theater nut, you won't have a single greater high at the movies this year than during its "Sunday" setpiece. That song by Rent's gone-too-soon composer, Jonathan Larson, is a personalized silly riff on Stephen Sondheim's transcendent song of the same name from Sunday in the Park with George.

From a recording of Hamilton dropping on Disney+ to In the Heights hitting the big screen, Lin-Manuel Miranda has been having a moment bringing his onstage work to a broader audience. Now, he's making his feature-length directorial debut with Netflix's Tick, Tick… Boom! (out Nov. 19), paying homage to his musical theater roots by adapting Rent creator Jonathan Larson's autobiographical musical of the same name. Starring Andrew Garfield as Larson, the film follows the legendary composer as he contemplates his career choices before his 30th birthday. Here's what you should know about the life that inspired the musical, a life that was tragically cut short at age 35.
Larson, who became worried about his career while waiting tables in New York City, first performed Tick, Tick... Boom! as a solo act in 1990. The musical centers on Jon, or Larson, as he starts to hear a ticking sound just before his 30th birthday.

Netflix has promoted executives Kira Goldberg and Ori Marmur to lead a new film team that will be focused on developing more big-budget, commercial films.
Goldberg and Marmur had previously reported to Tendo Nagenda, but now their team will continue to work closely and in parallel with his, with Nagenda continuing to lead a separate team that’s still focused on four-quadrant movies.
Goldberg and Marmur’s titles will remain VP of Studio Film, but their roles and responsibilities have increased, all with the eye of more growth in Netflix’s film slate. As a result, they’ll be tasked with hiring more people and more film executives.
Moving forward, Nagenda’s group is overseeing production and release of upcoming Netflix films such as “The Harder They Fall,” “The Gray Man” and “Knives Out 2,” while Goldberg and Marmur are overseeing “Don’t Look Up,” “Tick, Tick…Boom!,” “Red Notice,” “The Adam Project” and more.
