Playmates Toys is about to morph into action. As revealed in a Hasbro press release, Playmates Toys, the long-running toy brand best known for their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles toys, will be producing and distributing toys based on the Power Rangers franchise. They have a big job ahead of them as Power Rangers fans have had their pick of toys since the show began in 1993. However, even in that long history, there are still characters, locations, and more that have never been immortalized in plastic. Here are some of the biggest that, if Playmates really wants to impress longtime Power Rangers fans, need to happen.

In the early 90s, a new pop culture phenomenon grasped the young audience worldwide in the form of “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers,” which showcased a color-coded costume-wearing team of teenage superheroes, mentored by an alien trapped in a time warp, with each of the teens having their distinctive animal-motif weapons and transforming vehicles. While handling their real-life situations, the team of do-gooders battled the monster of the episode, which inevitably ended up in mechanical Megazord battles. The entire narrative, character designs, and even key battle sequences were heavily inspired by the Japanese tokusatsu series “Super Sentai.” The simplistic plotline, caricature-ish characters, over-the-top action, and quippy dialogues, all tied together with a shoestring budget, had a self-aware charm of their own, which made it possible for the series to further itself into a newer motif-oriented franchise spanning over three decades with thirty new series—although the newer versions have lost their appeal by far.

The original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers return for the 30th anniversary of the American series on Netflix. While favorites like David Yost (Blue Ranger) and Walter Emmanuel Jones (Black Ranger) will return, so will the evilest villain. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once and Always will bring back the vile Rita Repulsa (Barbara Goodson), but her return is questionable based on how the character exited the franchise.

Power Rangers will celebrate its 30th season next year and it’s tackling this anniversary season with a true throwback to the past For most of its life, each new Power Rangers season would feature a completely new cast, story line, and a new adaption of a Japanese Super Sentai series. This somewhat changed starting in 2011 with Power Rangers Samurai where the traditional season was broken into two smaller seasons but it was still business as usual. The only seasons that carried over a large majority of their casts were the first five, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Power Rangers Zeo, Power Rangers Turbo, and Power Rangers in Space.
However, for the first time since those seasons, Power Rangers: Cosmic Fury won’t be introducing a whole new cast. Instead, Cosmic Fury will feature the entire main cast from Power Rangers Dino Fury returning in their same roles. A video from Hasbro Pulse confirmed the news,...

Power Rangers in Space was a revolutionary entry in the Power Rangers franchise. The show had certainly evolved over the previous five seasons but In Space was a quantum leap forward. Airing in 1998 on Fox Kids, the series featured serialized plots, character arcs with depth, and gifts for longtime fans in the form of returning Rangers and villains. Nearly 25 years later, the series remains highly regarded, many elements of it even making their way into the current Power Rangers comics.
But it all could have been so very different. Imagine a version of In Space where Astronema wasn’t the big bad, Red Ranger Andros didn’t exist, and Power Rangers Turbo’s Justin is a a main character! At one point in time these were real possibilities.
To discuss all this we need to go back to May 1997, back around the time the second half of Turbo was beginning to be written.

Wanted to check out Power Rangers but haven’t had the chance? Here are the episodes to get you started.
So you’ve heard of Power Rangers. Maybe remember watching it as a kid. But recently you’ve noticed, “hey, wait a minute. This show is still on… How???" Well after nearly nine hundred episodes Power Rangers has attracted a huge fanbase. Across the twenty five plus seasons there have been episodes that have hooked people. Episodes that have sparked the imagination, drawn people in, and turned them from casual viewers into hardcore fans.
Of course you might be a little busy to watch nearly nine hundred episodes to find those gems, so here's a sampling to get you started.
It should be noted this is not a “best episodes” list nor is it an “essential viewing guide.” This is just a smattering of episodes that can...

Odd List Shiromi Arserio 3 Oct 2013 - 07:00
Shiromi talks us through ten of the least expected sci-fi crossovers in the geek TV world...
Who would win in a fight? The crew of Babylon 5 or the crew of Deep Space Nine? While often reserved for the realm of fan fiction, two established franchises crossing over does happen from time to time. Typically you'll see this when the properties are owned by the same company, like Superman meeting Batman. While other times it's an intentional crossover of two very different properties like Star Trek characters crossing over into the X-Men universe. Yes, you read that right.
This list is devoted to the top franchise crossovers. I've tried to steer clear from shows that obviously exist in the same universe, like Tng characters showing up on DS9, or Buffy appearing on Angel, and instead focus on crossovers from separate franchises. Some of...

When Mighty Morphin Power Rangers hit television screens across the country, there was something the separated it from everything else that was on tv. We were given a rare program that balanced great stories and action with lessons. The lessons didn't appear at the end of the broadcast like with He-Man and GI Joe, it appeared through out each and every episode. Eventually, the Power Rangers lost that after Andros destroyed Zordon's tube and the Z wave eliminated all evil in the universe during the final episode of Power Rangers in Space. Prior to Lost Galaxy, the Power Rangers were about friendship, trust, kindness, physical/mental and spiritual health, and most of all it was about always being the bigger person. In the early days, the rangers rarely fought amongst themselves nor did they make fun of each other. In fact, this style of Power Ranger completely changed after Rangers in Space.

Two types of people might take interest in the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Power Rangers complete series boxed sets: the diehard fans and those nostalgic for a piece of childhood. In this scenario, one of the parties will likely find huge disappointment waiting for them, while the other will simply be taking advantage of a spiffy consolidated set to streamline their collection. Can you guess which is which? Anyone who grew up with the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and never checked in with the series after its run in American primetime might do well to not look back, because the memories they have of Austin St. John, Walter Emanuel Jones, David Yost, Thuy Trang, Amy Jo Johnson, and Jason David Frank are best left as such. The series only achieved that same quality once again in the series (in Power Rangers in Space) and beyond that you have an...

The folks at JEFusion.com shared footage from this year’s Power Morphicon of Saban Entertainment’s promo reel for next year’s Power Rangers series. Their seventeenth series, Power Rangers Megaforce, will be based on the thirty-fourth of Toei Company’s Super Sentai series, Tensou Sentai Goseiger.
Starting with the original Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers in 1993, based on Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger, Saban has been producing series using costumes, props and action footage from the Japanese originals. The series have remained a perennial hit in the States, as the original series has done in Japan for the past thirty-six years.
It’s not the first time the name has appeared in entertainment either. One of the original sentai series had “mega” in the title; Denji Sentai Megaranger, which was used to create 1998′s Power Rangers in Space. Action film fans may remember the Hal Needham directed MegaForce, starring Barry Bostwick and Persis Khambatta.

Million of twentysomethings cry out in joy as the original Power Rangers are finally coming home on DVD.
Nothing says the 1990s like the TV series Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. The nostalgia is likely to get a big boost when the orignal series finally hits DVD on August 21. The series will not only feature the first 30 episodes (out of 60 from the first season), but a bunch of extras straight out of the Saban vault. For millions of boys who fell in love with Amy Jo Johnson back in the day, this is welcome news. I'm sure arguments abound among fans as to which Power Ranger was the best, but remember this: Ultraman owns them all.
Here's the complete press release courtesy of Shout! Factory. Enjoy!
Following its debut in 1993, Saban’s iconic live-action pop culture series, Power Rangers quickly became the most watched children’s television program in North America.

It was an awkward conversation with my college roommate the day we moved in together. “Are you really hanging that up?” he asked, glaring at my Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers poster. “Of course!” I replied unapologetically. I mean, if I was going to have to stare at his giant Moroccan tapestry all year, he could handle my little Power Rangers poster. (And my Wall•E poster. And my Lost poster. Oh, and maybe my Spider-Man and Pokémon posters, too.) My roommate sort of grimaced, trying his hardest to seem pleasant, and I gave him a similar look of pity — clearly,...
