Nice artwork...okay story.

"Goodrich Dirt, Cow Puncher" is one of 21 Goodrich Dirt films made by the Bray studios and which were directed by a rather young Wallace Carson between 1917 to 1919. This particular short is contained in the DVD entitled "Early Animation Pioneers" by Alpha Video.

When I began watching this short, I was very much surprised at the quality of the artwork. For 1918, it was incredibly nice looking....at least for the day. By the 1930s, cartoons looked a lot better than this one...but in its time it was exceptional.

The story finds Goodrich at a ranch where he begins trying, mostly unsuccessfully, to ride horses and make himself useful. During most of this time, another cowhand laughs at Goodrich's ineptitude. In the end, Goodrich shows that he's a sadist and he gets the last laugh. Overall, well animated but the story itself if only fair to average.
