VH1’s “Pop-Up Video” turns 20 today. Here are some facts about the seminal music video commentary series. It seemed like too much work Woody Thompson and Tad Lowe pitched 10 ideas to VH1, but when they got to the “Pop Up Video” idea of putting factoids about each video on screen, network executives exclaimed, “”Wait, you’re going to have people read TV?” A couple of big hits made it possible Though network executives were skeptical of the idea, they tasked the series creators with making a pilot, which they did, with Alanis Morissette’s “You Learn” and TLC’s “Waterfalls.

While it turns out they’re not the hottest May-December romance in Hollywood, Jessica Lowndes and Jon Lovitz still have some amazing on-screen chemistry in her new video for “Déjà Vu.”
The “90201” babe, who pranked fans by telling them she’s dating the much-older comedian, looks incredible in her new clip, which is done like a “Pop-Up Video” with random thought balloons throughout.
Lowndes wrote, “I love a good prank so happy early April Fools! I fell in love with [Jon’s] humor and comedy so when I was looking for someone to be a part of my Déjà Vu remix, which is a nod to the 80’s Mystery Science Theatre 3000 and 90’s Pop Up Video, he was the first person to come to mind.”...

60 years ago today, one of the most iconic cinematic depictions of youthful rebellion and alienation, “Rebel Without a Cause,” opened in theaters. The film debuted less than a month after the premature death of James Dean (who plays troubled teen Jim Stark in the film) at age 24 in a car accident. “Rebel Without a Cause” came out at a time when pop culture was fascinated with the juvenile delinquent, though director Nicholas Ray looked not so much to recent films about troubled youths (like 1954’s “The Wild One”). He has said that he strove for a classical tone and that he found major influence in Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” which Ray once called “the best play written about ‘juvenile delinquents.’” Other notable October 27 happenings in pop culture history: • 1947: “You Bet Your Life,” the radio show hosted by Groucho Marx, premiered. It was later a TV show on NBC.

Congratulations to Miss New York Kira Kazantsev, who took the crown with her looks, grace, poise, and by playing the cups (yes, those cups) along to Pharrell's "Happy." And, honestly, that wasn't even the strangest talent act: This ventriloquist performance was. But no matter what the contestants chose to sing or dance to, they were upstaged over and over again by the Pop Up Video–style captions that appeared during their short acts — ranging from the impressive ("Sang in Carnegie Hall") to the completely absurd ("Slapped a shark as a kid"). It made you wonder exactly what was on those get-to-know-you questionnaires. Here are all the fun facts.

So, you think you know every single thing there is to know about the original "Star Wars" trilogy? Well, certainly, given how well documented those movies have been in the decades since they changed the sci-fi landscape, we're not surprised by your confidence. But we're pretty sure you'll find something new to discover in this massive, seven-hour documentary trilogy covering "Star Wars," "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return Of The Jedi." Perhaps you've seen this already -- it's been kicking around for a while -- but if not, better give it a look while you can before the lawyers at Lucasfilm swat it down. Comprising of three fan-made, feature-length efforts -- "Star Wars Begins," "Stars Wars: Building Empire" and "Star Wars: Returning To Jedi" -- these are unofficial commentaries of sorts, running the length of each respective movie and containing interview segments, clips, alternate footage, bloopers and more to dig way,...

So, we were sitting around the VH1.com offices, discussing the various merits of Britney’s bad-good hit “Till the World Ends,” when we remembered that pop tart Ke$ha actually wrote the song (yep, the gin-soaked starlet is a total wordsmith)! Which begged the question — how many other pop stars in their own right had penned huge smashes for other artists?
The answer? More than you’d think. For many up-and-coming artists, songwriting is a clever way to break into the industry (while also racking up ultra-lucrative writing credits). And for established artists, crafting tracks for other singers is a way to explore sounds or subject matter that might not jibe with their own persona. Hence, Bruce Springsteen penning The Pointer Sisters‘ steamy ’70s soul ballad, “Fire.” So deliciously random!
From Keri Hilson to Pink, here are our favorite fifteen artists secretly behind some of the top smashes of our time.

Everyone knows talking in a movie theater is totally obnoxious. We go to the movies to get lost in a good story, not to listen to some rude d-bag yapping at the screen like these guys, right? That’s usually the idea. But with ticket sales declining in the past few years, some theater owners have discovered that sometimes letting people yell at the movie screen might actually not be such a terrible idea—and in some cases, might even enhance the experience. “I’m always cracking jokes when I watch movies, either with friends or alone, so why not do both with an audience?...

Woody Thompson knows internet-connected Americans love memes. He also knows Americans in general love watching short-form entertainment properties they’ve already seen superimposed with “info nuggets” containing obscure facts, clever copy, cute graphics, and surprising anecdotes about said entertainment property and the people who created it. So, Thompson’s decided to combine the two. PopSpot Video is VH1’s Pop Up Video rebooted for the YouTube generation. The program features old viral videos we’ve all seen before made new again by way of giving us something we haven’t seen, tens of quirky-fact-filled bubbles popping up on screen by way of simple animation and a super cute sound effect. Did you know Antoine Dodson was holding a bus pass in his now world famous local news interview? And Amber Lee Ettinger aka Obama Girl was crowned Miss Manhattan 2003 by Hooters? Me neither! But after watching PopSpot Video, now we both do.

While our darkened theaters are under threat of text messaging hordes, an app called Yeah is attempting to alter the way we watch movies at home. The concept is born out of the hope that movie fans will love watching classic movies with Pop Up Video-style trivia, polls, behind-the-scenes interviews and (since it’s all done through Facebook) the ability to share what you’re watching with friends and strangers. Essentially, it sounds like watching a movie and the DVD special features all at the same time. It’s an interesting pitch, but I’ll let Yeah try to sell itself with this video: There seems to be an undeniable push to make movie-watching more communal, which is ironic given that the theater experience that’s supposed to be communal is now being threatened by an audience that’s growing more passive. It’s as if marketers and, sadly, some...

We’re not sure we can be objective about More Like Her, the new novel from author Liza Palmer. That’s because she’s family — a writer for VH1′s Pop Up Video. So rather than review the book, we invited her to write a guest blog about it, the world of celebrity and which celebrities she dreams of casting in the movie adaptation.
I’ve been writing books for almost 10 years and wrote for the first season of VH1′s Pop Up Video in 2011. My books, like my life, have explored the idea of identity and being comfortable with who you are, warts and all. What is this “normal” we’re all reaching for? Clearly, after four books, I’m still trying to figure it out. But, with More Like Her I wanted to raise the stakes a bit. I wanted something to happen that couldn’t be taken...

With the end of the "Twilight" franchise in sight, will star Robert Pattinson follow the lead of "Harry Potter" actor Daniel Radcliffe and segue into the land of musical theater?
Maybe, if Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong has his way. The rumor that Pattinson could be eyed for the lead role in the big-screen adaptation of the Green Day album/Broadway musical "American Idiot" picked up some serious steam this week. The only problem is that the "news" is not exactly new, but rather based on speculation from Armstrong more than two years ago, before Pattinson was, well, mega.
Asked who he would like to play Christian, the male lead, Armstrong told Spinner.com in an April 2009 interview, "I'm gonna say maybe that kid in 'Twilight,' [Pattinson]. He's a good actor. There's...

There's...

We'd Love to see Rob take on the big-screen version of the hit Broadway musical! Do you think Rob is right for the part? Thank God Vh1 brought back up Pop Up Video! Without it, we'd never know that Green Day front-man Billie Joe Armstrong thinks Robert Pattinson would be the perfect male lead in a movie version of the band's smash Broadway musical American Idiot! R-Patz fansite Robstenation harkens back to the original 2009 Spinner.com article, in which Billie Joe proclaimed Rob as his first choice: "I'm gonna say maybe that kid in Twilight. ... He's a good actor. There's still more to come with that kid." "More to come?" Oh, B.J., you had no idea how right you were. Watch the Pop Up Video version of Green Day's "21 Guns" below -- graciously uploaded by R-Patz fan site Spunk-Ransom.com -- then tell us if you think Rob would,...

Those of you who thought you’d been Terra Nova’d back to the ’90s when you saw both Clarissa Explains It All and Pop-Up Video on your programming guide last night, know this: Pop-Up Video is back with brand new episodes. After a nearly decade-long hiatus, the VH1 show that paired popular music videos with bubbles of trivia about their artists returned yesterday with 10 years’ worth of pop culture to catch up on.
I recently reminisced about this show when VH1 ran a marathon during a trans-continental JetBlue flight. It was one of my favorites throughout the precious time...

Beavis and Butt-head return to MTV later this month, and MTV's sister network, VH1, is also giving us a welcome blast from the past with the return of "Pop Up Videos" today (noon). New episodes of the series were last seen on VH1 in 2002, and music videos in general have only become more scarce -- particularly on MTV and VH1 -- since then. But "Pop Up Video," with its wealth of well-researched factoids, those cute little icons and, of course, the infectious theme song and "pop" sound effects, has dug...

In honor of the VH1 staple “Pop Up Video” making a triumphant, factoid-filled return to the air in October, VH1.com just released a new Make Your Own Pop-Up Video Program, allowing users to choose from a variety of new & old videos and a very simple interface to add bubbles to that video, and not unlike the show, it is very inexplicably addictive. Below, I’ve put my own “Dantastic” (meaning, made way worse) spin on an all-time classic, A-ha’s “Take On Me”. Click the embed below to watch — I believe you’ll find it informative and an excellent use of your time: Check out the Create Your Own Pop-Up Video page yourself, and feel free to go to town. The Video town. (Also, if you’re wondering where the “pop” sound effect is, as was my first question, our VH1 tech people have informed me that “they’re working on it.

Though they've pulled in record ratings, a common complaint from old purists has been that sister networks MTV and VH1 have abandoned the vehicle that drove them to prominence: the music video.
To help quell the outrage and fuel the demand for highly produced pop music promos, VH1 has bowed to the pressure and brought back the music video -- with a catch. If you want it so badly, they seem to be saying, you'll have to deal with the most intrusive gimmick in music television history: the pop-up video!
The show, which ran from 1996-2002, was at one point highly rated for its info nuggets of pop culture ephemera and behind-the-scenes facts. It's been an irregular feature on the network since it went all reality, all the time, but the powers that be have decided that there is once again a place for the show, slotted somewhere between psychotic celebs.

Pop Up Video left the airwaves in 1998. The music video died. Then this internet thing kind of took off. And then videos found a new home! So what do you know? VH1 is resurrecting the series, which premieres on October 3 and will air weekdays at 12pm and 12:30pm Et on VH1. Here's a teaser: The annotated version of More >>...

Pop-Up Video, VH1's music-video show that featured "pop-ups" with information about the artist and the video shoot, thematically linked factoids, and joke-y asides, is returning to our TV screens on October 3rd. I don't know about the rest of you, but I loved this show as a child. While I can never remember any concrete details about watching it — except maybe something about the Spice Girls? — I distinctly remember being sad when it went off the air. But now it's back! And the show has released one of the first videos to get the Pop-Up 2.0 treatment, Britney Spears' "Till the World Ends." God, I'm not sure how to say this. Oh, my timorous typos and spot-on spoonerisms. If you've read this column for any length of time or have the misfortune of knowing me on the facebooks or Twitter, you know that no JRo status/tweet/column is complete without a typographical error or five. Thankfully most of you are kinder and gentler than the folks in this link. I honestly don't know why you put up with me. (Happy Place)
Oh I know why! It's because you rely on me to bring you hard-hitting, relevant news that makes your day complete. For example, that Nordic Slice of Lutefisk, that Towering Blonde Inferno of Sexual Heat, The Third Best Reason To Watch "True Blood" and #7 on the 2011 Pajiba Bangable List is now single. Whooo! Oh, so's Kate Bosworth I suppose. Yay? (Celebitchy)
I brought up the internet meme "planking" yesterday when mocking (the very pretty, very nice, super untalented) Eliza Dushku.

For some reason I get at least four emails each week from VH1 Press telling me all sorts of exciting news about the network that I haven't actually seen since I last watched Pop Up Video reruns while doing homework in 1998. It's rather inexplicable, not because I don't get a ton of pointless trade news to my Pajiba email but because I get this to my private email account. It is the only trade news I get to that email account. And I felt that eventually I needed to share with you. Because I'm a giver.
Some of this news is past due (i.e. advertising episodes that have since aired) but I know that it doesn't matter. Just because the train wreck isn't on the side of the road anymore doesn't mean the pictures aren't still astonishing.
On the next "RuPaul's Drag U" (Mon. July 11th), three "butch" lesbians...

The simple trick of Woody Allen's latest and beautiful film, Midnight in Paris, is having his viewers fall for the precise nostalgia trap he's warning us about -- that longing to go back to another era we feel must have been better than our present one, even if the residents of back then also are looking at the past. It crosses generations, Allen points out, an interesting "grass is always greener" approach to time no matter when that time was. A modern-day American writer, Gil (Owen Wilson), longs to live in Jazz-age 1920s Paris, while a woman he meets during his mysterious visits to that era thinks Paris was at its best during La Belle Époque, namely the 1870s-'80s. Gil gets to learn his lessons about looking back the magical way, what with middle-of-the-night adventures with a young Ernest Hemingway, Salvador Dali, Cole Porter and F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald.

Best Return: VH1 announced they’d ordered 60 new episodes of the classic show Pop Up Video. (Wait, do people still make videos?)
Best Send-Off: While one never relishes seeing a talented actor such as Harry Lloyd loses the job security that comes with nabbing a role on a high profile cable series like Game Of Thrones, if you gotta go… you might as well go in unforgettable fashion at the not-so-understanding hands of Khal Drogo. Rip Viserys Targaryen.
Worst Send-Off: If the idea behind Glee’s Big Apple [Mis]-Adventure was to ensure fans wouldn’t miss the show while it’s off on summer hiatus, well, mission accomplished.
Most Embarrassing Display: One week into filming in Italy, the cast of Jersey Shore have already proved themselves to be the very definition of ugly Americans.

After a ten-year hiatus, VH1 is bringing back their legendary show "Pop Up Video." Back in the mid-90s, "Pop Up Video" and "Behind the Music" put VH1 on the map with their fascinating portraits of life on the set and with the band. If you aren't aware of the format of "Pop Up Video" (welcome to the world, young'un) it's pretty much exactly what you think: Music videos play and bubbles of truth pop up and reveal interesting behind-the-scenes tidbits about the video and factoids about the band. It's engaging, fun, and has a good beat that you can dance to. Also, it's educational. How else are you supposed to know that Van Halen's "Hot For Teacher" used actual whale sounds in the song? The show's co-creator Woody Thompson is on board as executive producer of the reboot, so fans can expect more of the delightful, snarky format...

Before American Idol became the go-to venue for aging hipsters wanting to launch a musical renaissance, there were few places for rock relics to be seen or heard by a younger audience. One of the best, however, was Pop Up Video, the 1990s VH1 program that made shamelessly dated music videos redeemable with the aid of humorous, often sarcastic, trivia. Many a college student sat mesmerized while Pop Up Video skewered former hits like A-Ha’s “Take on Me,” or David Lee Roth’s “I’m Just a Gigolo,” only to be reminded they missed Chem Lab when they reached...

Admit it: The "Pop Up Video" theme has been stuck in your head for 15 years. It may be there for 15 more, now that VH1 has announced its long-overdue decision to revive the groundbreaking 1996-2002 franchise. The series will be revamped for a run of 60 half-hour episodes and will debut this fall, the network confirms. Woody Thompson, one of the co-creators of "Pop Up Video," will return at the helm. Much like what "Mystery Science Theater 3000" did for B-movies, "Pop Up Video" poked snarky fun at music videos everyone had...

Trivia buffs, get ready for some excellent news: VH1 announced today that it is resurrecting 'Pop Up Video.'
We'll now have 60 more half-hour episodes from which to glean funny tidbits of information about music videos. This time, though, the show will also skewer hip hop and rap, which the original version steered clear from so as not to step on sister network MTV's toes. The new series will debut in the fall, nearly a decade after the original version went off the air.
The show's co-creator Woody Thompson said "I have sat on the sidelines for the last decade and watched as everyone and the brother has ripped off 'Pop Up' in some way or another with the internet coming out of nowhere and Twitter being hauntingly familiar and all of these devices that are using snarky, pithy text."

Yesterday, we showed you a new promotional photo for the final season of Lost that reenacts The Last Supper. Now, the new season starts in a month, so what do you do if you haven't seen every episode or if, like me, you got disheartened around the middle of season three but unlike me, didn't continue to watch anyway as the show got its legs back?
Well, you're in luck. Because the show is so labyrinthine, there have been recap videos on the internet for years. In fact, ABC, fully aware of how much this show can hurt your brain, has toyed with different ways to keep you in the loop. There are clip shows, repeats with Pop Up Video-type enhancements, and they all server their purpose.

Fox is trying to sell more DVDs by adding Pop Up Video.
The Hollywood Reporter posts that the company is hoping to boost sales by "putting a new spin on interactivity, including harnessing the power of social networking" with a little system called "FoxPop." Not so much a "new spin," FoxPop is a downloadable computer program (works with Mac, PC, and iPhone) that will recognize the sounds of a film, immediately sync up, and give movie viewers a "constant barrage of facts, photos, games, and trivia questions related to the movie they are watching." In other words -- Pop Up Video on a separate screen you're welcome to ignore.
Fox's example of how it will work: "when a T. rex appears on the screen, for example, the user's iPhone would vibrate and ask how many bones that particular dino has. It will also tell what percentage answered the query correctly...

Silverado is one of the last great westerns we have. Sure, Unforgiven is undoubtedly a better film (and one of the top twenty-five greatest films ever) but Lawrence Kasdan’s 1985 epic is easily one of the most fun westerns of our time. While not flawless, the film is perfect when it comes to delivering a smart, fun, western romp which makes it painful the film doesn’t have a solid reputation.
