Wonderful if slight romantic experiment from Paul Thomas
lor_17 December 2016
As a Heather Hunter fan back in the day I feel a bit embarrassed to have missed this minor classic, but thanks to DVD reissues I was able to see the Wicked Release over 20 years later. It holds up well, even looking more like film than video, and is a testament to the creativity of filmmaker Paul Thomas.

The forgotten (for good reason) experiment here is that PT (using the moniker Judy Blue) stages the entire story in Heather's bathroom. Result, which only creeps up on the viewer after a couple of reels or so, is not claustrophobic or gimmicky, but surprisingly organic. It's merely PT's adaptation of familiar theatrical techniques one would not expect to work on screen.

The short movie (just 72 minutes) has four sex scenes in the bathroom, which is decorated with flowers and plants and does not convey the usual connotation of a lavatory, plus having a lovely bathtub integrated into the action. Opening brief scene has Heather and hubby Sean Michaels prepping in the morning as he's going off to work, followed by her literally writing him a "Dear John" letter (his character is named John), as she chats on the phone with her lover Brad (Steve Drake), planning to dump her husband. Film title in the opening credits includes the comma: "Dear John,", which adds to its epistolary meaning.

Brad reminds absent-minded Heather that tonight is her wedding anniversary which he will be attending, and the rest of the video takes place in that same bathroom as various party guests enter it during the off-screen fete. Of course, the permutations of folks in the bathroom lead to explicit sex scenes.

Terri Diver is terrific as a bisexual friend of Heather's who not only seduces relatively plain and shy Alex Jordan in the bathroom (Jordan is Brad's wife) but also has a very-hot three-way sex scene in the bathtub with Heather and Tom Byron, who plays her husband.

Drake himself as Brad finally shows up in the commode and after being warmed up by Diver ends up humping his own wife. Keeping straight the relationships between the characters and their free-wheeling infidelities is fun, part and parcel of Thomas's strongest genre: life-style porn.

Finale is quite satisfying, with Sean making up with Heather, after having earlier peeked in for a moment and seen her hanky-panky threesome. The two reconcile, with Heather taking his huge-cock for a ride, leading to a most ingenious and satisfying ending resolving the suspense regarding her crumpled up "Dear John" letter.

Deceptively simple and satisfying, the way Adult Cinema used to be in the Golden Age, and in this case the video decade beyond that.
